  • Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). Paraules clau: Ramon de Cornet, lírica occitanocatalana, trobadors, Consistori de la Gaia Ciència, Escola de Tolosa Abstract The study of 14th-century Occitan poetry has been overshadowed by its alleged subjection to the poetics of the contests organized by the Toulousain Consistory of the Gay Science.

Magí Sunyer The literary Construction of the Spirit of Catalonia: The Chivalrous Ideal and Modernity (1833-1874) Magí Sunyer Universitat Rovira i Virgili 1. Introduction The contemporary nations – the ones that emerged from the revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries whether they had any previous substance or not – were constructed on the basis of a narrative that gave them an identity in the eyes of both insiders and outsiders. This construction involved all the sectors of society and all sorts of artistic and scientific disciplines. Literature played a major role. Alongside painting, sculpture and music, architecture and urbanism, literature provided a model of myths and symbols that represented the country with old and new icons to. In this process, the past is referred to not for archaeological reasons but as a model of the nation aspired to. So, historical episodes are selected and manipulated in accordance with the ideological interests of those in charge of the process. It is in this context that concepts such as “the invention of tradition” (Hobsbawm & Ranger) and “the social construction of reality” (Berger & Luckmann) acquire their full meaning. The interpretation of the past is not innocent. Never. Nowhere. In the sense that the term is habitually used, the Catalan nation can be traced back to the Middle Ages and it was defeated and humiliated at the beginning of the 18th century. It had been mutilated quite considerably fifty years before when Philip IV illegally sold Rosselló, Vallespir and a part of Cerdanya to Louis XIV of France. With the Nova Planta decrees, Catalonia was stripped of its democratic and modern institutions and laws, and was annexed to the kingdom of Spain.

It is also said that, because these Basque people were vulgar, ferocious, and wild […] and the mountains they inhabited were inaccessible, they never fell completely under the yoke of the foreign empire, or they shook it swiftly. Juan de Mariana, General History of Spain, (1601). What are we waiting for while congregated in the forum? The barbarians are expected to arrive today. Why is there such lack of action in the senate? Why are the senators sitting still and do not legislate? Because the barbarians will arrive today. … Why are the streets and public squares becoming empty? And everybody is going home with skeptical thoughts? Because night has fallen and the barbarians did not arrive. Some people came from the border And reported that the barbarians do not exist anymore. Now what are we going to do without barbarians? These people were after all a kind of solution. Constantine P. Boylan, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh 2013 DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Why does widespread terrorism develop from some ethnic groups but not others? I define this type of violence - ethnic terrorism - as terrorism conducted in the name of an ethnic identity group. This dissertation examines the development of ethnic terrorism with a framework drawn from the motives, means, and opportunities (MMO) structure familiar from criminal law. I argue that the motive for ethnic terrorism is the violation of ethnic groups’ human security; the means is sponsorship primarily by the host ethnic group but also by foreign actors; and the opportunity is a vacuum in political space created by the departure of nationalist leadership, which allows terrorist elites to rise to dominate the ethno-political agenda.

The standardizations of Catalan: Latin to present day* Kevin Stillwell University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [email protected] Lauren Hetrovicz University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign [email protected] In this study, using Haugen’s (1972) model of language standardization, we argue that the standardization of Catalan is best understood to be two distinct processes of standardization following a common trajectory, with the second process being informed, though not determined, by the first. While much ink has been spilt discussing the nineteenth- century “re-birth” of Catalan and the linguistic normalization following the death of Franco, comparatively little work has been done on the early development of Catalan as the standard language of the medieval Kingdom of Aragon and less still examining both of these processes. 1. Introduction The standardization of Catalan presents some interesting and unique features that distinguish it from the processes of standardization that other Romance varieties underwent. Due to the imposition of Castilian as the official language in much of the Catalan-speaking territory in the fifteenth century, the standardization process was interrupted and, lacking the centralizing force of a state-sponsored language, Catalan varieties began to The authors would like to thank J.I. • Cultural Nationalism As a Transnational Communicative Process the Case
Cultural nationalism as a transnational communicative process: The case of Celticism JOEP LEERSSEN A recurring problem in studying European national movements is that of “internalism” or “methodological nationalism”: the tendency to explain phenomena in a given country primarily from causes within that same country. We explain German nationalism from German social and political circumstances, Finnish nationalism from Finnish social and political circumstances, Irish nationalism from Irish social and political circumstances. As these examples indicate, this internalism also implies a tendency towards socio-economic determinism: historical phenomena tend to be explained by relating them to socio-political causes. In its extreme form, this amounts to what Bruno Latour has denounced as “explaining the social from the social”: phenomena in society are explained in terms of society as determining infrastructure. The tendency is all the more obvious when we deal with cultural phenomena such as intellectual reflection, the production of discourse, literature and art: these are a priori seen as explicanda and the socio-political “infrastructure” is a priori seen as the location of their explanation. In this manner, culture is always the result of a process (or the passive, inert ambience in which that process takes place) whereas the agency of the process is always the sphere of social action. This blinds us to the possibility that culture itself is a praxis , a form of social action, a communicative activity with potential agency and the potential to cause changes – rather than being merely the expression of changes caused elsewhere. My starting point is that in order to get a more comprehensive grasp of historical developments, in particular in the rise of national movements in Europe, we need to combat the partiality and tunnel-vision of internalism and infrastructural determinism.

B ASQUE CLASSICS SERIES This collection seeks to provide in English translation key texts and authors in the cultural development of the Basque Country. It will The Basques encompass anonymous works authored by the “community” to the BASQUE CLASSICS texts of Modern Age polemicists authored in the defense of Euskara SE RIES (the Basque language) and Basque political institutions. The Basque Classics Series will also publish anthologies and books of key near by Jacques Allières contemporary scholars of outstanding and enduring worth who have 11 made original and serious contributions to our understanding of Basque history, linguistics, and culture. With an Introduction by BEÑAT OYHARÇABAL Many modern French speakers have come to know about the Basques through Jacques Allières’s concise, reliable book, which we now publish in English for the first time. Published in the 1970s, before the post-Franco Spanish constitution and the creation of the autonomous communities on the South side of the border and written from the perspective of the north, The Basques this book provides and invaluable snapshot of a time and place in Basque history. The book is part of the Presses Universitaires de France’s well- known collection Que sais-je? Azevedo Description: Since medieval times, Catalonia has been a source of cultural expression that has ranged far beyond its present-day geographic borders. The uncommon diversity of its languages, literature in both Catalan and Spanish, and popular culture is studied in this volume by scholars from the United States and Spain who met in Berkeley in 1997 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Gaspar de Portola Catalonia Studies Program. The dialogue between Catalonia and the other regions of the Iberian Peninsula is both analyzed and continued in this collection of essays by outstanding specialists in linguistics, literature, musicology, digitized media, and cultural studies.
