On the Monetary Impact of Fashion Design Piracy Abstract Whether to legally protect original fashion designs against design piracy (“knockoffs”) is an ongoing debate among legislators, industry groups, and legal academic circles, yet to-date this discussion has not utilized marketing knowledge and formal approaches. We combine data collected on the growth of fashion items, price markups, and industry statistics, to create a formal analysis of the essential questions in the base of the debate. We distinguish between three effects: Acceleration, whereby the presence of a pirated design increases the awareness of the design, and thus might have a positive effect on the growth of the original; Substitution, which represents the loss of sales due to consumers who would have purchased the original design, yet instead buy the knockoff; and the loss due to Overexposure of the design that follows the loss of uniqueness due to the design becoming too popular, causing some consumer not to adopt the design or stop using it. -

Privacy When Form Doesn’t Follow Function Roger Allan Ford University of New Hampshire [email protected] Privacy When Form Doesn’t Follow Function—discussion draft—3.6.19 Privacy When Form Doesn’t Follow Function Scholars and policy makers have long recognized the key role that design plays in protecting privacy, but efforts to explain why design is important and how it affects privacy have been muddled and inconsistent. Tis article argues that this confusion arises because “design” has many different meanings, with different privacy implications, in a way that hasn’t been fully appreciated by scholars. Design exists along at least three dimensions: process versus result, plan versus creation, and form versus function. While the literature on privacy and design has recognized and grappled (sometimes implicitly) with the frst two dimensions, the third has been unappreciated. Yet this is where the most critical privacy problems arise. Design can refer both to how something looks and is experienced by a user—its form—or how it works and what it does under the surface—its function. In the physical world, though, these two conceptions of design are connected, since an object’s form is inherently limited by its function. Tat’s why a padlock is hard and chunky and made of metal: without that form, it could not accomplish its function of keeping things secure. So people have come, over the centuries, to associate form and function and to infer function from form. Software, however, decouples these two conceptions of design, since a computer can show one thing to a user while doing something else entirely. -

They represent different mod- R els for doing research, and these models have distinct names and procedures associated with them. Rigorous research designs are important because they guide the methods decisions that researchers must make dur- ing their studies and set the logic by which they make interpretations at the end of studies. Once a researcher has selected a mixed methods approach for a study, the next step is to decide on the specific design that best addresses the research problem. What designs are available, and how do researchers decide which one is appropriate for their studies? Mixed methods researchers need to be acquainted with the major types of mixed methods designs and the common variants among these designs. Important considerations when choosing designs are knowing the intent, the procedures, and the strengths and challenges associated with each design. Researchers also need to be familiar with the timing, weighting, and mixing decisions that are made in each of the different mixed methods designs. Introduction Currently celebrating its 70th anniversary, Design Council is at the forefront of championing the role and importance of design. Following the launch of the Design Economy series, Design Council asks: “In an age of austerity, rising inequality, urbanisation and ageing populations, climate change, the redefinition of the role of the state, big data and ubiquitous surveillance, how are we, as a society, to assess the risks and opportunities found in design’s ascendency?” Design Council News 27th April 20151 Research is a key aspect of this. In the context of recent updates to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) Creative Industries Economic Estimates2 and detailed sub-sector reports on economic impact across other aspects of the creative industries, Design Council has identified the need to update, and expand upon, its 2005, 2008 and 2010 industry research in order articulate a robust and complete picture of the value of design. To this end, TBR has been commissioned to undertake research to measure the economic impact of design in the UK economy. 1.1 Aim and core research questions The aim of this research is to articulate the value of and investment in design in the UK. This will be done by assessing the contribution of design to the UK economy, including gross value added (GVA), productivity, turnover, employment and exports of goods and services. Further specific aims include focussing on the contribution of micro-businesses, the value of design across sectors, and a regional breakdown of the design sector. -

Contractors, owners and architects behave differently when dealing with change orders. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that change orders are the natural result of the disintegration of design and construction, which started in the US in 1893 with a Congressional Act formally separating the design and construction phases of a capital project .Delivery methods such as Design-Build (DB) and Construction Management at Risk (CMR), which are designed to mend the missing integration of design and construction and, consequently, eliminate the existence of change order conflict are proposed to recover the level of integration that existed at the time of the master builder. Introduction Change orders in construction are one of the most controversial issues to manage and a challenge to project management to satisfactorily resolve any change in order to avoid claims.
