“First Editions” at the Jin Yong Gallery Dr Yau Kin-Yan, Clarence Jin
An Overview of the “First Editions” at the Jin Yong Gallery Dr Yau Kin-yan, Clarence Jin Yong’s novels were first serialised in the New Evening Post in 1955, but later several offprints (known as “the First Editions”) were also published. They were to be followed by other editions revised by the author himself: the first was edited in the early 1970s, entitled The Jin Yong Novel Collection (referred to as “the Revised Editions”); and the second was further revised and compiled based on “the Revised Editions” (known as “the New Revised Editions”) towards the end of the 20th century. Among them, the First Editions are the most highly valued and avidly sought after by Jin Yong’s fans because the contents have been rewritten over and over again by the author himself in the later editions, and they would like to find out what was in the earliest versions. But with the many decades in between, those old copies are very hard to find today, and this adds to the public’s curiosity for the unknown. “The First Editions” is a generic term that covers not only the nascent versions before Jin Yong started revising them in 1972, but also the printed versions published in various newspapers, magazines, offprints etc. The Jin Yong Gallery of Hong Kong Heritage Museum has on display physical copies of published works and contents that are the most representative of Jin Yong’s novels. In other words, they have lifted the veil from the mysterious unknown, and revived contents that have intrigued Chinese readers in all parts of the world over the last half century. -

The depiction of nüxia underwent a significant development from the classical to modern literature of knight-errantry-related genre. Jin Yong, the master of wuxia fiction, has created many remarkable nüxia that distinguishes his nüxia images from the literary conventions. To examine Jin Yong’s uniqueness in portraying nüxia, this thesis will look into the history of nüxia-related works of poetry and classical literature, and analyze Jin Yong’s nüxia in the context of the literary history. -

A Story Is Always Born Twice
Sandra Camacho RoCH: Fandom and the nostalgic return So it starts with looking back, it starts with a return. susan pui san lok’s (b. 1972) RoCH (Return of the Condor Heroes) Fans & Legends began with a wish of the London-born artist to look back at her Chinese ancestry; to relate to a culture that, simultaneously, was and wasn’t her own. To make this return she took not to history books, or to unpractised traditions and customs, but instead looked to what had always connected her – and the Chinese diaspora – to their past and to each other: the television adaptations of Jin Yong’s wuxia 1. Tere are many names a project can take: it can begin with its infuencing roots, its conceptual basis, and it can be modifed as the work is adapted or assumes diferent shapes – or lives. RoCH Fans & Legends took its name from two elements: the title of one of Yong’s most popular novels – Return of the Condor Heroes; and the fan community that surrounds it, that ardently discusses and is inspired by it, and transforms it into RoCH. Fandom is key to RoCH, as it is key to lok’s project, as it is key in understanding the work. But let us continue with the 1 Te simplest translation of wuxia – with wu denoting martial or military energies, and xia meaning a heroic or chivalrous individual – is as a genre of literature that primarily focuses on the tales of martial art heroes in ancient China (to whom the closest Western approximation would be that of the ‘errant knight’).
