Lent 2021 Homily Series: The Gift is Greater than the Transgression Lent is a time of Repentance and change. It is a time to recognize our sin and seek to change. Lent is when we acknowledge the offenses we have committed against God and repent. Yet the Gift of His Mercy is so much greater than any transgressions we commit. I think we often forget this fact and assume we are beyond redemption. Many of us have become so accustomed to the way secular culture has normalized Sin that we don’t believe redemption is necessary. This falsehood is based in two erroneous conclusions that are both antithetical to the Gospel, but part of the baggage many bring into Lent, which diminishes its spiritual benefits. The first is the defeatist notion that this is the way the world is and there is no changing it. The second is the despairing notion that, since we are so broken, not even an all-powerful God is capable of redeeming us. The Gift, however, is magnanimous, overwhelming, gracious, and without hesitation. This Gift is offered to us in the form of a Covenant. Even though the People of God, both old and new, repeatedly break the Covenant through Sin, God remains steadfast in offering the Gift of His Healing Grace. And it is this Grace, this Gift, that continually restores us to Grace. It is not that we did anything to bring this Gift into existence—it is always there and available to us if we want it. Thus, the title for our Lenten homily series is “The Gift is Greater than the Transgression,” and, through it, we will unpack this message as it is made manifest through the readings for each week. The title itself is drawn from the 4th Sunday’s second reading (see also Romans 5:12-21). In it, St. Paul reminds the Ephesians that God is rich in Mercy and that we have been saved by Grace through Faith. God does this even though we are dead in our transgressions. We have done nothing to deserve it, but God offers the Gift anyhow. If only we would appreciate all that God has done on our behalf, we would never sin again. But since we do sin, we know that we can come before God and accept the Gift He offers.

In addition to preaching this message from the pulpit, the bulletin will also include a brief synopsis of the particulars for the message for each week as well as some simple “action items” to augment your Lenten experience. I look forward to taking this journey with you all the way to Holy Week and beyond. God Bless. The Gift is Greater Than The Transgression
