Dear Parishioners, Here is the Reflection for this week’s readings: In Christ, the world is transformed and we are called to be transformed along with it. Luke’s version of the Beatitudes, which we hear today, is more direct than Matthew’s. More difficult, as well. It is not the poor in spirit who inherit the kingdom of God, but the actual poor. It is not those who hunger for righteousness who will be satisfied, but the plain old hungry. As if that weren’t enough, Luke, unlike Matthew, also includes the flip side: “Woe to you who are rich. Woe to you who are filled now” (Luke 6:24-25), Basically, the kingdom of God reverses your current place in society. As Christians we are a paradoxical people. In baptism, we die with Christ. Because we have died with Christ, we receive the promise of eternal life. As Paul points out, we trust that Christ has been raised so that we may be raised as well. To borrow ’s image, we are the tree planted beside the waters of baptism -- the waters that bring plenty out of poverty, fullness out of hun- ger, joy out of mourning, and life out of death. If your current place in society were reversed, where would you be now? Love and Prayers Fr. Tuan

Saints of the Week St. Peter Damian: Peter was born in around 988[2], the youngest of a large noble, but poor family. Orphaned early, he was at first adopt- ed by an elder brother, who ill-treated and under-fed him while employing him as a swineherd. After some years, another brother, Damianus, who was at Ravenna, had pity on him and took him away to be educated. Adding his brother's name to his own, Peter made such rapid progress in his studies of and canon law, first at Ravenna, then at Faenza, and finally at the University of , that, around the age of 25, he was already a famous teacher at Parma and Ravenna.[3] Peter Damian is a and was made a by Leo XII in 1828 with a feast day which is now celebrat- ed on 21 February (Ordinary calendar).[8] Although it was traditionally given as 23 February, this was using the Roman calen- dar which had 29 days in January. So in 1970, his feast was moved to 21 February, to align it with the ordinary calendar. His body has been moved six times. Since 1898, Peter Damian has rested in a chapel dedicated to the saint in the of Faenza. No formal ever took place, but his cult has existed since his death at Faenza, at Fonte-Avellana, at , and at Cluny. The saint is represented in art as a cardinal bearing a knotted rope in his hand; also sometimes he is depicted as a holding a papal Bull, to signify his many legations.

Saint : Polycarp was a 2nd-century Christian bishop of Smyrna.[1] According to the Martyrdom of Polycarp he died a martyr, bound and burned at the stake, then stabbed when the fire failed to touch him.[2] Polycarp is regard- ed as a saint and Church Father in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Catholic, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. His name 'Polycarp' means 'much fruit' in Greek. It is recorded by , who heard him speak in his youth, and by ,[3] that he had been a of .[4] Saint wrote that Polycarp was a disciple of John and that John had ordained him bishop of Smyrna. The late tradition that expanded upon the Martyrdom to link Polycarp in competition and contrast with John the Apostle who, though many people had tried to kill him, was not martyred but died of old age after being exiled to the island of Patmos, With Clement of Rome and Ignatius of , Polycarp is regarded as one of three chief Apostolic Fathers. The sole surviv- ing work attributed to his authorship is his Letter to the Philippians; it is first recorded by Irenaeus of Lyons. His Feast Day is Feb. 23rd. Every gift to the CMAA makes a difference! The open- ing report for the 2019 Catholic Ministries Annual Ap- peal (CMAA) in todays bulletin details the many ways our annual appeals helps us offer Signs of Hope of God’s work here on earth

The CMAA supports 30 ministries that benefit so many throughout the Diocese of Joliet. As you will read in the opening report, gifts to the CMAA make a difference to members of our parish as well as our friends and neighbors and our brothers and sisters in need. Please complete the pledge card you received from the Diocese of Joliet last month and return it in the provided envelope or bring it with you to Mass next weekend.

Our parish’s goal for the 2019 CMAA is $36,500.00. If we raise more than this goal, 70 percent of the amount over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is a great benefit for our parish! Thank you for prayerfully reflecting on your gift to this year’s CMAA and making the most generous pledge possible.

Adult Faith Formation: A Study of the Crusades

There was a time when men were warriors and individuals made radical life decisions based on their faith in Christ and His Church. There was a time when faith permeated all aspects of so- ciety. There was a time when society stressed personal relationships founded on honor, loyalty, and service to one’s lord. There was a time when men realized they were sinners and that their actions had consequences, even after their death. There was a time when men made vows to God, wore a cloth cross on their garments, and joined armed pilgrimages to regain Church property and defend Christians. These men were Crusaders. The Crusades have always been controversial. Yet, and , including St. Francis of Assi- si, St. , and St. , encouraged warriors to “take the cross.” Please, join the Adult Faith Formation group as we study the Great of 1054, the Cru- sades, and scholars and saints who influenced the Church from 1000 to 1300. Time: 4:30 to 5:45 pm Wednesday or 9:15 to 10:30 am Thursday Lent: March 6/7 to April 10/11 Place: Basement of St. Mary’s Church
