  • Polemical Preaching at the University of Paris: Bonaventure’S Use of Paul As a Forerunner of Francis
    POLEMICAL PREACHING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PARIS: BONAVENTURE’S USE OF PAUL AS A FORERUNNER OF FRANCIS C. Colt Anderson We have seven surviving sermons on Francis of Assisi that Bonaventure preached from 1255 through 1267 at the University of Paris. These sermons share all of the formal elements of what has come to be classified as the “thematic” or “university sermon.” While such a designation might lead one to suppress a yawn, the form of the thematic sermon grew out of the same polemical context that helped to birth scholasticism. The masters of thematic preaching would raise questions about disputed matters before turning to answer them through the use of reason and the authority of scripture. This was an effective form of preaching for the Catholic Church as it struggled to respond to the critiques of the Cathars, Waldensians, and Muslims in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Normally thematic ser­ mons were written in the context of conflict, and Bonaventure’s sermons on Francis are no exception. They reveal the mind of a brilliant polemicist who was adept at seizing his opponent’s ground and at tapping into the successful rhetorical strategies of his predecessors. If we look at Bonaventure’s peculiar use of Paul as a type of forerunner for Francis, the rhetorical quality of these sermons stand out in sharp relief. Ignatius Brady, who was a seminal scholar of early Franciscan history, pointed out some of the apologetic elements of several of these sermons and situated them in the context of the Mendicant Controversy.     Chapter 3 Mulier Amicta Sole: Bonaventure’s Preaching on the Marian Mode of the Incarnation and Marian Mediation in His Sermons on the Annunciation J. Isaac Goff Bonaventure’s homiletical works on Mary provide a wealth of insight into his mature and maturing views on the person and role of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and are pivotal in grasping the development of his Marian thought that began in his scholastic works.1 His vision of the ‘Woman’ is couched within, yet helps illumine, his presentation of the Trinity, Christology, Anthropology, and Sacra- mental theology, providing many key links between these different areas of his theological reflections. Together Bonaventure’s sermons on the Blessed Virgin Mary provide the general outline of what later systematic Mariologies would treat. His presentation of Mary’s role in both the order of the Incarnation and her mediatory role in the Church, especially as it relates to questions of Pneu- matology, has, arguably, not been surpassed. Augustine, De diversis quaestionibus LXXXIII Introduction Discussions about power in the early medieval period were in general provoked by certain theological concerns. It was held that the ulti- mate cause of all being and becoming is one unique, supremely good, supremely rational, and supremely powerful being. Th e world is created from absolutely nothing and is at all times sustained in its existence by God. Th e view had some attractive consequences as it ensures that the world is—ultimately, and whether we see it or not—orderly, intelligible in principle, and a good place. Th e view is however also accompanied by some very diffi cult puzzles, most notably a particularly knotty and metaphysically charged version of the problem of evil. In his Confessions, Augustine famously describes how his initial fail- ure to come to terms with Christian credos such as God’s omnipotence and omnibenevolence against the background of his own experiences of a world abundant of imperfection long held him back and delayed his conversion. Apparently, his later encounter with Platonism led to an epiphany, and a Platonist approach to the problem of evil facilitated his wholehearted embrace of the faith. Th e details of the position arrived at are not however altogether clear from a philosophical point of view, and generations of thinkers would revisit the issues involved. Discussions about power (posse, potestas, potentia) in the early medi- eval period centred primarily on questions dealing with divine power, but questions about human powers, and the notion of power in itself, 90 tomas ekenberg were prompted by questions about the origin of evil, the nature of human free will, and the relation between free will and grace.

However, his distinction as a writer of poetry in his era remains hitherto under-appreciated. The thesis of this work argues that we find in St. Anselm’s body of work a confluence of poetry and philosophy that models a mode of theology valuable to the contemporary context. Utilizing a new Poetic/Dialectic Analytic methodology, it researches the literature that was most influential in Anselm’s monastic culture including the trivium curriculum, Boethius, Augustine, and the Psalmic liturgical tradition. After demonstrating a Medieval confluence of poetry and philosophy, the body of Anselm’s own work is likewise investigated, followed by an in depth poetic/dialectic analysis of his greatest work, the Proslogion. Finally, a discussion of the theontic semiotics of Anselm’s Neo-platonic participatory ontology connects his understanding of God’s nature as the source of all being with a doxological account of language that both articulates and demonstrates a form of theology that is simultaneously poetry and philosophy.
