Thus it is incumbent upon public historians to understand the strategies by which images and artifacts convey history in exhibits and to encourage a conver- sation about language and methodology among the diverse cultural work- ers who create, use, and review these productions. The purpose of The Public Historian’s exhibit review section is to discuss issues of historical exposition, presentation, and understanding through exhibits mounted in the United States and abroad. Our aim is to provide an ongoing assess- ment of the public’s interest in history while examining exhibits designed to influence or deepen their understanding. -

At a young age, he began talking and listening to people to find out what issues mattered the most. Adams proposed new ideas, first in his own newspaper, then in other newspapers throughout the colonies. When Britain began taxing the colonies, Adams encouraged boy- cotting and peaceful protests. He was an organizer of the Boston Tea Party, one of the main events leading up to the American Revolution. The British seemed intent on imprisoning Adams to keep him from speaking out, but he refused to stop. He was one of the first people to publicly declare that the colonies should be independent, and he worked tirelessly to see that they gained that independence. According to Thomas Jefferson, Samuel Adams was the Father of the Revolution. Exploring Boston’s Religious History It is impossible to understand Boston without knowing something about its religious past. The city was founded in 1630 by settlers from England, Other Historical Destinations in popularly known as Puritans, Downtown Boston who wished to build a model Christian community. The Sons of Liberty : Patriots? OR Common ? Core Terrorists focused! http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Mr-Educator-A-Social-Studies-Professional Instructions: 1.) This activity can be implemented in a variety of ways. I have done this as a class debate and it works very, very well. However, I mostly complete this activity as three separate nightly homework assignments, or as three in-class assignments, followed by an in-class Socratic Seminar. The only reason I do this is because I will do the Patriots v. Loyalists: A Common Core Class Debate (located here: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/ Product/Patriots-vs-Loyalists-A-Common-Core-Class-Debate-874989) and I don’t want to do two debates back-to-back. 2.) Students should already be familiar with the Sons of Liberty. If they aren’t, you may need to establish the background knowledge of what this group is and all about. 3.) I will discuss the questions as a class that are on the first page of the “Day 1” reading. Have classes discuss what makes someone a patriot and a terrorist. Talk about how they define these words? Can one be one without being the other? How? Talk about what both sides are after. What are the goals of terrorists? Why are they doing it? It is also helpful to bring in some outside quotes of notorious terrorists, such as Bin Laden, to show that they are too fighting for what they believe to be a just, noble cause. 4.) For homework - or as an in-class activity - assign the Day 1 reading. -

Upon seeing the king’s throne in the House of Lords, Rush said he “felt as if he walked on sacred ground” with “emotions that I cannot describe.”1 Throughout the eighteenth century, colonists had developed significant emotional ties to both the British monarchy and the British constitution. North American colonists had just helped to win a world war and most, like Rush, had never felt prouder to be British. And yet, in a little over a decade, those same colonists would declare their independence and break away from the British Empire. Seen from 1763, nothing would have seemed as improbable as the American Revolution. -

Miller states : "Yet there was an escape from this dilemma [of what to do when the tea arrived at Boston] which, had Sam Adams permitted, ... would have made unnecessary the Boston Tea Party. If the tea ships anchored below Castle William in- stead of entering the port of Boston, they could return to England without a pass from the governor, payment of duty, or observance of any of the formalities required by Parlia- mentary law. [Governor] Hutchinson planned to avert the crisis he saw gathering in Boston by ordering the tea ships to anchor below the Castle so that, if it appeared that the tea could not be landed, they could set sail for the mother country. But Sam Adams had very different plans for the 'plagued' East India tea. ... Adams seldom let slip an opportunity to plunge the colonies deeper into controversy with Great Britain; and he soon showed that he had no intention of allowing the crisis brought on by the East India Tea Act to pass quietly. When the first tea ship [the Dart- mouth] anchored below Castle William, its captain was sum- moned before the Boston committee of correspondence, where he was ordered by Adams and other committeemen to bring his ship up to the Boston wharves and land all the cargo except the tea on pain of being tarred and feathered by the Liberty Boys."^ ' John C. -

ACHP LISTENING SESSIONS ON HISTORIC PRESERVATION WITH ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER COMMUNITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS Angel Island State Park San Francisco, California Wednesday, March 18, 2015 Old South Meeting House Boston, Massachusetts Friday, January 30, 2015 May 2015 2 Background As part of an Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) initiative on building a more inclusive national preservation program (BAMIPP), two listening sessions were held to seek the views of Asian American and Pacific Island (AAPI) experts on cultural heritage and historic preservation, including activists, scholars, community leaders, and representatives of non-governmental organizations and institutions. The purpose of these sessions was to discuss ways that historic preservation in general, and the national historic preservation program in particular, can better meet their communities’ needs to preserve and enhance AAPI historic places, history, and culture at the local, state, and national level. The goals for the sessions were to: Hear from AAPI community representatives and civic activists about their experience with historic and cultural preservation in their communities; Share information and views about the challenges, opportunities, potential benefits, and techniques of preserving history and historic places, cultural practices and traditions, and other aspects of AAPI heritage in modern America; Discuss how special places of particular importance to AAPI communities could and should be preserved, and how they might help support community vitality, identity, and education; and Explore how historic preservation in general could better serve the needs of AAPI communities for building and sustaining their community life and community institutions. Two session were held, one in the East and one in the West.
