Clinton Presidential Center Educational Programs 1200 President Clinton Avenue • Little Rock, Arkansas 72201 501.374.4242 • www.clintonfoundation.org/cpceducation Temporary Exhibits Mandela: The Journey to Ubuntu September 24, 2017 - February 19, 2018 Ubuntu oo’oontoo – a quality that includes the essential human virtues: compassion and humanity.

Mandela: The Journey to Ubuntu commemorates the life and legacy of former South African President Nelson Mandela through photographs by Matthew Willman who revisited many of the locations that played an important role in South Africa’s route to racial equality and President Mandela’s personal fight for freedom. Visitors will travel throughout South Africa with Mandela via Willman’s camera lens: Mvezo Village, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Robben Island. The exhibit will also feature artifacts from Mandela’s life on loan from The Nelson Mandela Foundation, as well as artifacts displaying the deep connection between Presidents Mandela and Bill Clinton from President Clinton’s own collection.

From humble beginnings to a life dedicated to resistance, Mandela: The Journey to Ubuntu tells the story of a young South African boy who became a man prepared to die in the name of equality, justice, and freedom. This exhibition provides a platform for sharing the values so richly present throughout President Mandela’s life to understand the role forgiveness, leadership, truth, and sacrifice play in overcoming the challenges we face in society today. This exhibit is presented by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

It’s been there at every moment – in war and peace, in the struggle for human rights, and in triumph and tragedy. Politically, it marches with us in protest, champions the American Dream, supports campaigns, and amplifies our voices when we demand change. It embraces those who are different and encourages other to do the same. Rock and roll is the voice of “us” – of people around the world who strive to be heard. It reflects our world or a call for it to change. The music speaks for us and with us, and ultimately is louder than words.

Using video, multimedia, photographs, periodicals and artifacts, this exhibit showcases the intersection between rock and politics. It will explore how artists exercise their First Amendment rights, challenge assumptions and beliefs, stimulate thought, and effect change.
