The Anne Frank Tree In 2009, the Clinton Center, in partnership with the Sisterhood of Congregation B’nai Israel, was one of 11 entities in the United States to receive a sapling taken from the actual chestnut tree outside Anne Frank’s Secret Annex where she and her family hid during World War II.

The Anne Frank Tree Installation stands as a symbol of hope, endurance, and justice on the grounds of the Clinton Center. It consists of five framed, etched glass panels – arranged to evoke the feeling of being inside a room – surrounded by complementary natural landscaping. The two front panels feature quotes from Anne Frank and President Clinton. The three additional panels will convey the complex history of human rights in Arkansas through descriptions of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and the Little Rock Central High School desegregation crisis of 1957.

As part of the Clinton Center’s mission, we present unique temporary exhibits with coordinating educational programs and events. Featuring a variety of historical and cultural topics, our temporary exhibits offer educators and students engaging learning experiences.

Temporary Exhibits Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea April 27-October 27, 2019 Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea is a family-friendly exhibit that features more than 20 giant sea life sculptures – made entirely of trash and debris collected from beaches. This exhibit poignantly illustrates the toll trash takes on our oceans and waterways.

The incredible marine life sculptures are accompanied by educational signage allowing visitors to learn about fascinating species, environmental stewardship, responsible consumer habits, and how “every action counts” to help save our waterways.

The Washed Ashore exhibit is primarily displayed inside two of the Clinton Center’s galleries. Visitors can see Eli the Eel, walk through the Reef at Risk, and play the Styrofoam Drum Set. The exhibit opened to the public April 27, and a second phase featuring additional sculptures opened in June. Priscilla the Parrot Fish, a 16-foot-long, 1,500-pound brightly-colored sculpture greets visitors from the water fountains located outside the front doors. Washed Ashore is sponsored by the Regional Recycling & Waste Reduction District, which promotes effective recycling to residential customers and encourages strategies to reduce waste.

… Like It’s 1999: American Pop Culture in the 1990s November 23, 2019-May 17, 2020 “As if” anyone could forget the prosperous, golden, hopeful years of the 1990s! This fall, the Clinton Presidential Center is bringing back the decade that brought us blockbuster movies, must-see television shows, genre-changing music, iconic fashion, collectible toys, and the rise of PCs and the World Wide Web.

This exhibit will feature an exciting and diverse display – from props and scripts to fashion and tech – that, together, will tell the story of popular culture in the United States at the end of the 20th century. You won’t want to miss Rose’s dress and Jack’s drawing portfolio from Titanic, scripts from The West Wing, a Garth Brooks guitar, and, of course, a collection of Beanie Babies that were sent to the Clinton family during the White House years.

Throughout the exhibit, you’ll have the opportunity to play a variety of interactive games that focus on the era, including ’90s trivia, Pogs, a giant crossword puzzle with ’90s clues, and a ’90s-style video game!

At the Clinton Center, we’ll “never let go” of the 1990s, and we invite you to join us in taking a trip down memory lane with …Like It’s 1999: American Popular Culture in the 1990s! Fusion: Arts + Humanities Arkansas The Mighty Mississippi: The HeART and Soul of the Southern Delta December 2019-March 2020 In 2020, we will continue exploring The Mighty Mississippi through our Fusion: Arts + Humanities Arkansas program.

The HeART and Soul of the Southern Delta will present art and culture from the last 120 years with roots in Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The exhibit will feature music from the Southern Delta and a selection of visual art that embodies the varied cultural experiences of the Delta – daily life, work, play, poverty, sharecropping, faith, and more.

NEW! Educators may add a classroom discussion and screening of the Clinton Center’s orientation film where President Clinton tells his life story in the context of the American experience during the 20th century. This will add an additional 20 minutes to your visit.

NEW! Mini-Presidential Tour Guided Tour and Program

The Mini-Presidential Tour was designed specifically for our youngest student visitors. This hands-on tour encourages exploration and invites imagination. Students are welcomed by an engaging classroom activity in which they play a matching and identification game that helps define national symbols and the responsibilities of the President. On the tour, students will explore the Oval Office and Life in the White House exhibits and learn more about the symbols and duties explained in the classroom. This tour will last up to 60 minutes. Holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick’s Day, and Chanukah have long been celebrated at the White House each year. During the Clinton Administration, the White House also celebrated Ramadan for the first time. During this combined classroom program and tour, students will learn more about White House holiday Pre-K-Second Grades Permanent Exhibit Programs & Tours traditions by viewing objects used during the celebrations – including hand-painted Easter eggs, a handcrafted menorah, and a crystal shamrock bowl. During this guided tour of Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea, students will search for everyday items they recognize in the sculptures and will discuss how they think these items ended up in the ocean. On this tour, students will experience a mix of creativity and recycling! Within the Washed Ashore exhibit, students will spend dedicated time studying masks made out of recycled materials that represent the habits of the throwaway lifestyle. Ideas Matter is a self-guided tour that challenges young leaders to think about the ideas and qualities that have been important to President Clinton throughout his life. A custom-designed guidebook complements the tour and helps students learn about America’s achievements during President Clinton’s time in office. This tour will last up to 60 minutes.

NEW! Civic Literacy: The Crisis in Kosovo Guided Tour and Program

As they assembled around the long table of the Cabinet Room, President Clinton, his Cabinet secretaries, and other government officials made tough choices about the nation’s future. We invite students to experience these high-level negotiations through a classroom experience that allows them to play the roles of foreign policy advisors who, among other things, planned and implemented military missions in Kosovo. The newly updated Civic Literacy Tour infuses contemporary history, photos, and speeches to commemorate 20 years since North Atlantic Treaty Organization secured the freedom of Kosovar Albanians – a plan spearheaded by President Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Following the classroom component, students will visit the Clinton Center’s permanent exhibits, including the Cabinet Room and selected Policy Alcoves. This program will last up to 60 minutes. During this 60-minute experience, students will visit The Anne Frank Tree installation and examine four historical episodes – the Holocaust, the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, and the Little Rock Central High School desegregation crisis of 1957 – which serve as poignant and painful reminders of the complicated journey toward social justice in Arkansas and around the world. Following the guided tour, students will participate in a moderated discussion of topical issues of the day, reflecting on the themes of hope, endurance, and justice. 12

Most students are familiar with the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Washed Ashore highlights how these conservation efforts can improve the environment and our oceans. While viewing the exhibit’s art pieces, students will learn more about ecology and the way plastic is affecting our ecosystem. They will also discuss how they can actively reduce plastic use in their daily lives. This tour will last up to 60 minutes. Civics Capstone Project Fair – Get Informed, Get Inspired, and Get Going April 2020 Great Hall The Civics Capstone Project Fair encourages middle school students to get informed, get inspired, and take action, while gaining a deeper understanding of current civic issues presented to them by their peers. Each year, high school civics students in the Little Rock School District create their own civic engagement projects. Bring your middle school students to see how these high school students’ innovative civic engagements make the world a better place. This partnership allows students to tour both the Clinton Center and the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site to explore the impact of the Little Rock Nine and their long-standing relationship with President Clinton. At the Clinton Center, students will see and learn about the significance of one of the Congressional Gold Medals presented to the Little Rock Nine during a special ceremony at the White House in 1999. Students will also visit the Oval Office and Cabinet Room. At the Historic Site, students will tour the visitor’s center and learn about the sacrifice and struggles of the nine Civil Rights pioneers who changed the course of history. This tour will last approximately 140 minutes. Students will spend 60 minutes at the Clinton Center and 60 minutes at the National Historic Site. An additional 20 minutes are included for travel.

The enhanced Civic Literacy program infuses contemporary history, photos, and speeches to commemorate 20 years since the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) secured the freedom of Kosovar Albanians – a plan spearheaded by President Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and retired Gen. Wesley K. Clark, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Europe. Students will take part in the National Issues Forum (NIF) deliberation format, which will guide them through the difficult decision-making process by closely weighing the advantages and disadvantages of three different strategies: diplomacy, military force, or isolation. After a public deliberation, students will compare their choices to the decision made by President Clinton on March 24, 1999. Students will also visit the Clinton

On this tour, students will engage in global conversations about the impact of plastic pollution and learn how national policies can make a difference. Additionally, students will take a closer look at the sculptures of Washed Ashore to uncover that art is more than the sum of its parts and leave inspired to take action to revitalize the oceans. Environmental Leadership Discussion with Dr. Mamie Parker October 2, 2019 • 9:30-11:30 a.m. Great Hall We invite your students to hear from Dr. Parker, whose life is an example of how to turn an interest in biology and the environment into a career of public service. Dr. Parker has received many accolades, including the distinguished Presidential Rank Award, and created the first Arkansas Ecological Services Field Office in Conway. Born in Wilmot, Arkansas, her mission is “Helping Others Keep Growing and Going.” Ninth-Twelfth Grades Special Events & Programs Bring your students so they too can learn how to be a part of the conservation effort. Fall Service Day October 4, 2019 • 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. In partnership with the City of Little Rock and City Year Little Rock Great Hall The second annual Fall Service Day is hosted in partnership with the City of Little Rock and City Year Little Rock. This year, we will feature state Rep. Jamie Scott, who has received numerous community awards for her public service. We also will host a panel of current and past alumni of City Year and AmeriCorps who will share the lasting impact public service has had on their lives. The day will begin at the Clinton Center with an icebreaker that will encourage students to engage with their peers from other schools, followed by the panel discussion and a hosted lunch. After lunch, the students will participate in a service project sponsored by the City of Little Rock that will inspire them to find more ways to give back to their community.

NEW! Out Loud October 11, 2019 In partnership with The Yarn Great Hall The Clinton Center is proud to partner with The Yarn, a unique storytelling organization, to celebrate National Coming Out Day! There are two ways educators and their students can participate in this event. Do you have an LGBTQ student or ally who has a story to tell? Storytellers will be chosen by mid-September, and The Yarn will provide mentoring and speech coaching for all students selected. Ideas Matter Essay Contest Submission Deadline: February 1, 2020 The Clinton Foundation focuses on creating economic opportunity, improving public health, and inspiring civic engagement and service. Arkansas students in 11th and 12th grades are invited to write a 1,500-word (minimum) essay exploring one of these three focus areas. Students are asked to define a challenge, propose an idea to alleviate that challenge, and develop a strategy for putting that idea into action. The top three students will be recognized, and the student with the winning essay will be awarded a $2,500 college scholarship. The essay must be submitted by February 1, 2020. The first session of the Future Leaders Series is an intensive two-day workshop in November, facilitated by Just Communities of Arkansas (JCA), that offers the opportunity to build meaningful relationships across identity lines, explore difficult issues that affect the lives of teens and educators in Arkansas, and learn new skills for navigating conflict. The students and educators will meet again January 18, 2020, to frame the topic for the second annual Student Forum on April 1, 2020. (See Page 22 for additional information about the Student Forum.) Bring your class to participate in civic discussions, hear from subject matter experts, and demonstrate the power of dialogue. Students will leave knowing that their ideas matter and understanding the power of informed action to energize the next generation of thought leaders and engaged citizens. The issue to be explored will be announced in January 2020. Space is limited. The Debate Fall 2019 • 9:30-11 a.m. Spring 2020 • 9:30-11 a.m. Great Hall “The Debate” challenges high school debate students to deliberate on topics while inviting a student audience to gain perspective on both sides of a headline issue. The debate will be held in the Great Hall of the Clinton Center and will encourage the student audience to remain engaged while providing questions for the debate teams via a live digital survey. Ultimately the student audience will determine the winner by measuring the change of audience opinion – through digital polling – Ninth-Twelfth Grades Special Events & Programs before and after the debate. Day of Action: Global Youth Service Day April 17, 2020 In partnership with City Year Little Rock and the Arkansas Food Bank Great Hall Established in 1988, Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world and the only day of service dedicated to children and youth. Every year, the Clinton Foundation celebrates GYSD with a special service-learning program and Day of Action service opportunity at the Arkansas Foodbank for Arkansas high school juniors and seniors. This Day of Action provides a platform where everyone can give back and inspire others to come together to make a difference. Last year, 220 students and community members volunteered to pack 26,370 pounds of produce, which provided meals for Arkansas families. Each school is limited to 20 student participants. Stephens Center, UA Little Rock We kicked off the new school year at our Annual Head of the Class Bash. The first 3,000 students received free backpacks and back-to-school supplies. We also provided immunizations, physicals, dental screenings, vision screenings, and more to ensure students were ready for a successful start to the school year. Read for the Record (Pre-K-Third Grades) November 7, 2019 • 9:30-10:30 a.m., 10:30-11:30 a.m., & 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. In partnership with Too Small To Fail Great Hall This fall, the Clinton Center will participate in the 14th annual national “Read for the Record” campaign, which highlights the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child. Join us as local celebrities and community leaders read Thank You, Omu! by Oge Moral. Thank You, Omu! tells the story of a generous elderly woman who makes a fantastic pot of thick red stew. The scent from her stew travels all throughout her neighborhood and brings her community members over to her home for a taste. By the end, she shares a lovely feast with her neighbors where everyone contributes to the meal. Each student who participates will receive a copy of Thank You, Omu!, available in both English and Spanish. Too Small to Fail, an initiative of the Clinton Foundation, is leading a public awareness and action campaign to promote the importance of early brain and language development and to empower parents with tools to talk, read, and sing with their young children. The play is particularly impactful as it shows its main character — from the time he was a boy memorizing the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence to the time he is an old man — refusing to give up “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” The “playwright Jeanne Sakata uses the true story of Gordon Hirabayashi to illuminate one of the most heinous stories in America’s history. Arkansas’s largest “green” fashion show, Curbside Couture offers students in third-twelfth grades the opportunity to apply their creativity and technical skills to create wearable designs made of recycled material. The fashion show is the product of months of hard work by student designers and guidance from educators and mentors. Participants will attend a mentoring session with acclaimed designers, including Korto Momolu, first runner-up inProject Runway’s fifth season, and the Clinton Center’s own Connie Fails. Over the progression of four years, student chefs learn proper culinary techniques, discuss nutritional information, visit local farms, and much more. Students participate in exciting food challenges throughout the week and conclude by preparing and executing a special reception to reveal their new culinary skills to family members and guests.
