www.cablefaxdaily.com, Published by Access Intelligence, LLC, Tel: 301-354-2101 Cablefax DailyTM Thursday — January 9, 2020 What the Industry Reads First Volume 31 / No. 006 Quick Bites: Quibi Not ‘Shrinking TV’ For Mobile Viewing In just over a year, short-form content streamer Quibi has been able to raise $1bln in funding while receiving the back- ing of major Hollywood studios, but are consumers ready to embrace the app? CEO Meg Whitman and founder Jeffrey Katzenberg used the company’s CES keynote Wednesday to dispel any consumer skepticism regarding Quibi, calling it the world’s first mobile-only premium entertainment platform. “Mobile phones are the most widely-distributed, democra- tized entertainment platform the world has ever seen,” Katzenberg said. The idea behind the platform is to deliver movie- quality experiences in quick bites (known as Quibis) for Millennial and Gen Z audiences that take advantage of all of the capabilities modern smartphones offer. To do so, Quibi had to tackle the usual challenges that come with mobile viewing, including the inability to watch content in both portrait and landscape modes. “It means creating a technology platform optimized for people on the go and giving them a great entertainment experience in those in-between moments,” Whit- man said. “We’re not shrinking TV onto phones. We’re creating something new.” Chief product officer Tom Conrad took to the stage to unveil Turnstyle, a new way to watch that allows viewers to move between a full-screen landscape mode and a full-screen portrait mode experience at any time. Conrad illustrated Turnstyle by showing the short film “Nest.” When the phone was held in portrait mode, viewers were able to see an intruder trying to break into a woman’s house through her Google Nest doorbell camera.

  • Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy
The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy Dr. Valerie Scatamburlo-D'Annibale University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada Abstract This article explores how Donald Trump capitalized on the right's decades-long, carefully choreographed and well-financed campaign against political correctness in relation to the broader strategy of 'cultural conservatism.' It provides an historical overview of various iterations of this campaign, discusses the mainstream media's complicity in promulgating conservative talking points about higher education at the height of the 1990s 'culture wars,' examines the reconfigured anti- PC/pro-free speech crusade of recent years, its contemporary currency in the Trump era and the implications for academia and educational policy. Keywords: political correctness, culture wars, free speech, cultural conservatism, critical pedagogy Introduction More than two years after Donald Trump's ascendancy to the White House, post-mortems of the 2016 American election continue to explore the factors that propelled him to office. Some have pointed to the spread of right-wing populism in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis that culminated in Brexit in Europe and Trump's victory (Kagarlitsky, 2017; Tufts & Thomas, 2017) while Fuchs (2018) lays bare the deleterious role of social media in facilitating the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. and elsewhere. Other 69 | P a g e The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy explanations refer to deep-rooted misogyny that worked against Hillary Clinton (Wilz, 2016), a backlash against Barack Obama, sedimented racism and the demonization of diversity as a public good (Major, Blodorn and Blascovich, 2016; Shafer, 2017).

  • A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected]
Student Research and Creative Works Book Collecting Contest Essays University of Puget Sound Year 2015 The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works Krista Silva University of Puget Sound, [email protected] This paper is posted at Sound Ideas. http://soundideas.pugetsound.edu/book collecting essays/6 Krista Silva The Wonderful World of Whedon: A Collection of Texts Celebrating Joss Whedon and His Works I am an inhabitant of the Whedonverse. When I say this, I don’t just mean that I am a fan of Joss Whedon. I am sincere. I live and breathe his works, the ever-expanding universe— sometimes funny, sometimes scary, and often heartbreaking—that he has created. A multi- talented writer, director and creator, Joss is responsible for television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , Angel , and Dollhouse . In 2012 he collaborated with Drew Goddard, writer for Buffy and Angel , to bring us the satirical horror film The Cabin in the Woods . Most recently he has been integrated into the Marvel cinematic universe as the director of The Avengers franchise, as well as earning a creative credit for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. My love for Joss Whedon began in 1998. I was only eleven years old, and through an incredible moment of happenstance, and a bit of boredom, I turned the television channel to the WB and encountered my first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer . I was instantly smitten with Buffy Summers. She defied the rules and regulations of my conservative southern upbringing.

  • 3.3 Million Volunteer Workdays
For nearly 30 years, buildOn has worked to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. We do this by mobilizing youth from some of the most under-resourced schools in the United States to transform their communities through service learning and by working alongside community members in economically developing countries to build much-needed schools. buildOn Global buildOn’s Global Programs partner with rural communities in developing nations to build equal access to education. Through our participatory methodology, buildOn has mobilized villages in some of the economically poorest countries on the planet. 2,012 School Construction: Communities, where we work, have no adequate school structure – students are squeezed into dark and crumbling mud buildings, have to walk many miles to a neighboring village, or can’t attend school at all. buildOn provides funding, engineering, materials, skilled labor, Schools Built and project supervision. We are breaking ground on a new school every two days with the help of parents and grandparents who have provided 3.3 million volunteer workdays. We are currently building schools in Burkina Faso, Guatemala, Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Senegal. 3.3 Million Gender Equality: Our methodology puts gender equality at the forefront and the community in VOLUNTEER WORKDAYS control. In many of the countries where we work, girls are not traditionally educated, and there are CONTRIBUTED BY few opportunities for adult women. buildOn’s agreement with each village ensures that girls are sent BUILDON COMMUNITIES to school in equal numbers with boys and that women have access to adult education.

OR, FOUR MEN IN A BATEAU (213 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Natasha Levinson, Ph. D. Dozens of academic studies over the course of the past four or five decades have shown empirically that Catholic schools, according to a wide array of standards and measures, are the best schools at producing good American citizens. This dissertation proposes that this is so is partly because the schools are infused with the Catholic ethos (also called the Catholic Imagination or the Analogical Imagination) and its approach to the world in general. A large part of this ethos is based upon Catholic Anthropology, the Church’s teaching about the nature of the human person and his or her relationship to other people, to Society, to the State, and to God.
