Two items were given by Mr. Gilbert Govan, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and nine letters were transferred from the Governor’s Papers. The Nahua people in Mexico called it cuetlaxochitl; 2007). xochitl is ancient Nahua for an ornamental fl ower. This plant did not fl ourish in their high altitude capital, Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), but every winter the rulers imported thousands of the plants from warmer regions. Extracts of the plant were used to dye cloth and its milky sap, or latex, was used for medicinal purposes. The Spanish conquerors and missionaries attempted to erase all evidence of the preceding pagan Aztec religion but records have survived showing that the plants were used for religious ceremonies in the winter (Anderson and Tischer, 1997). Once the Spanish friars took over they adopted the brilliant red plant as part of the Christmas ritual. The Spanish-speaking Mexicans named it fl ore de nochebuena, the fl ower of the Holy Night (Christmas Eve), and the French later named it etoile d’amour (star of love). The vivid red bracts of poinsettia that emerge in mid-winter have signifi ed the festive mood at Christmas and the joy of the season for many for over 150 years in the United States and Europe. The purpose of this article is to establish the actual story of its arrival in the United States and Europe attempting to clear away all the accumulated misinformation and cobwebs, and to review its extraordinary development as an important horticultural crop. -

Helen Nicolay (1866-1954) Helen Nicolay was born in 1866 to John G. Nicolay and Therena Bates Nicolay in Paris, where her father served as American Consul. In 1869, the Nicolay family returned to the United States. Helen’s academic training was overseen by her father as well as private tutors. Little is known about Helen Nicolay as a young woman, other than that she helped her father and John Hay write their 10-volume Lincoln biography by taking dictation. She began writing her own books after her father’s death in 1901 and had a summer retreat studio in New Hampshire she used for painting and writing. Her best known work is Lincoln’s Secretary: A Biography of John G. Nicolay. In all, she wrote more than 20 books, mostly history and biography, many of which were intended for children. She described her reason for writing in a letter to a young fan—she wrote books to make “history seem alive and interesting to young people.” Helen Nicolay was also a recognized artist. The Lincoln Museum Collection includes two oil paintings of John G. Nicolay painted by Helen Nicolay. -

Article II is basically just a short outline of powers. 3. A large part of America’s early political history deals with defining the extent of the executive power. B. The Changing View of Presidential Power 1. Why Presidential Power Has Grown -The presidency is in the hands of one person, rather than many, and many Presidents have worked to expand the powers of their office. -As the country grew and industrialized, especially in times of emergency, people demanded that the Federal Government play a larger role and looked to the President for leadership. -Congress has delegated much authority to the President, although presidential control over foreign affairs is greater than it is over domestic affairs. Congress simply continues to assert itself in the implementation of social programs. -Presidents have the attention and general respect of the media, the public, and their own party. C. How Presidents Have Viewed Their Power 1. Stronger and more effective Presidents have taken a broad view of the powers of the office. 2. Teddy Roosevelt viewed his broad use of Presidential powers as the “Stewardship Theory”, which means that the President should have the power to act as a “steward” over the country. 3. Recent, very strong presidents have given rise to the phrase “Imperial Presidency”, which implies that the President becomes as strong as an emperor. The term is often used to refer to the administration of Richard Nixon. -

I focus primarily on Joel Roberts Poinsett, a United States ambassador and statesman, whose career provides a lens into the tensions inherent in a yeoman republic reliant on territorial expansion, yet predicated on the inclusive principles ofliberty and virtue. During his diplomatic service in Chile in the 1810s and Mexico in the 1820s, I argue that Poinsett distinguished the character ofthe United States from that ofEuropean empires by actively fostering republican culture and institutions, while also pursuing an increasingly aggressive program ofnational self-interest. -
The Gettysburg Address - a History Lesson
THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS - A HISTORY LESSON The year was 1863. America was two years into the bloodiest war in its history. The previous September, at Antietam Creek, Maryland, America lost more sons in battle than any day before or since in our history. At the beginning of 1863 the war had no end in sight, with bloody battle after bloody battle being fought. But by the end of 1863, not only had the fate of the war been decided but the character of a nation was forever changed. That was also the year President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January, the first powerful blow to the institution of slavery. There could be no turning back for America. Those first three days of July 1863 where three days that changed the course of the civil war, and in turn changed future of the Nation. The decisive battle of the Civil War was fought in a small south central town in Pennsylvania. Gettysburg, a sleepy little town of 3500 was the county of seat of Adams County, Pennsylvania and was a light manufacturing center in addition to its agriculture commerce. At one time it was home to a shoe factory. The Confederates knew this and where in desperate needs of food and supplies. They headed for Gettysburg to see if they could find some shoes. Embolden by their past victories the Confederates had daringly come North to force peace on the North. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia and Meade’s Army of the Potomac converged on Gettysburg almost by chance. -

3 – POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY “Nebraska Territory” By: Stephen Douglas Date: January 30, 1854 Explanation of the Source: While debating Abraham Lincoln, Stephen Douglas explains the principles of Popular Sovereignty (Self-Government) in the Compromise of 1850. “Upon the other point--that pertaining to the question of slavery in the Territories--it was the intention of the committee to be equally explicit. We took the principles established by the Compromise of 1850 as our guide, and intended to make each and every provision of the bill accord with those principles. Those measures established and rest upon the great principle of self-government--that the people should be allowed to decide the questions of their domestic institutions for themselves, subject only to such limitations and restrictions as are imposed by the Constitution of the United States, instead of having them determined by an arbitrary or geographical line… The leading feature of the Compromise of 1850 was congressional non-intervention as to slavery in the Territories; that the people of the Territories, and of all the States, were to be allowed to do as they pleased upon the subject of slavery, subject only to the provisions of the Constitution of the United States. That, sir, was the leading feature of the compromise measures of 1850. Those measures therefore, abandoned the idea of a geographical line as the boundary between free States and slave States; abandoned it because compelled to do it from an inability to maintain it; and in lieu of that substituted a great principle of self-government, which would allow the people to do as they thought proper.
