OBSERVATIONS ON THE LIFE HISTORY OF PTERODONTIA FLAVIPES GRAY. (DIPTERA.)* By J. L. KING, Wooster. Ohio. INTRODUCTION. During the summer of 1915, while at Gypsum in northern Ohio, the writer found several peculiar dipterous larva? under burlap bands which had been placed around the trunks of some apple trees. The adults reared from these proved to belong to the genus Pterodontia of the family Cyrtidse. From the literature at hand it was evident that little had been published concerning the habits of this interesting family. This stimu lated further observation, the results of which are recorded in this paper. Later a more thorough study of the literature was made, particularly of those articles which deal with the life histories of the members of the family. These have been briefly summarized and are appended after each special topic. The writer wishes to express his gratitude to Professor A. D. MacGillivray for his kind interest and help in the preparation of this paper. Thanks are also due to Mr. J. R. Malloch, of the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History for the identifi cation of the species, and to Mr. Nathan Banks for the determination of the host spiders. THE MATURE LARVA OF PTERODONTIA. On July 20, 1915, three larvae were found under the burlap bands which surrounded the trunks of some large apple trees. In all c?ases the larvae were found either suspended in abandoned spider webs or entangled by threads and resting partly on the bark or on the burlap. When suspended, their position was maintained by the web adhering to their sticky body surface. -

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Abstract —This paper comprises Part II of a review of flower visitation and pollination by Diptera (myiophily or myophily). While Part I examined taxonomic diversity of anthophilous flies, here we consider the rewards and attractants used by flowers to procure visits by flies, and their importance in the lives of flies. Food rewards such as pollen and nectar are the primary reasons for flower visits, but there is also a diversity of non-nutritive rewards such as brood sites, shelter, and places of congregation. Floral attractants are the visual and chemical cues used by Diptera to locate flowers and the rewards that they offer, and we show how they act to increase the probability of floral visitation. Lastly, we discuss the various ways in which flowers manipulate the behaviour of flies, deceiving them to visit flowers that do not provide the advertised reward, and how some flies illegitimately remove floral rewards without causing pollination. Our review demonstrates that myiophily is a syndrome corresponding to elements of anatomical, behavioural and physiological adaptations of flower-visiting Diptera. -

Weeds of the future? Threats to Australia’s grazing industries by garden plants Abstract This report identifies 281 introduced garden plants and 800 lower priority species that present a significant risk to Australia’s grazing industries should they naturalise. Of the 281 species: • Nearly all have been recorded overseas as agricultural or environmental weeds (or both); • More than one tenth (11%) have been recorded as noxious weeds overseas; • At least one third (33%) are toxic and may harm or even kill livestock; • Almost all have been commercially available in Australia in the last 20 years; • Over two thirds (70%) were still available from Australian nurseries in 2004; • Over two thirds (72%) are not currently recognised as weeds under either State or Commonwealth legislation.
