Ann Gaffney ii For George and Margaret ABSTRACT Carrot inflorescences are unspecialised in form and structure and as such, may be pollinated by a large range of insects. Although there is some literature published on insect visitation to open-pollinated carrot seed crops in several regions around the world, there are none in Australasia and there is none on insect visitation to hybrid carrot seed crops worldwide. With much geographic and seasonal visitation evident among these published studies and a growing hybrid carrot seed crop industry in Southern Australia and New Zealand, this study was undertaken to investigate insect visitation to carrot seed crops. Surveys and observation studies of insect visitation were undertaken over three consecutive seasons in the south of Tasmania in order to identify and determine the behaviour of potential pollinators in carrot seed crops. -

Backhuys Publishers, Leiden. xlviii + ix 756 pp. INTRODUCTION Bombyliids, or bee flies as they are commonly called, comprise a diverse and speciose assemblage of brachycerous flies. With more than 4,500 species known worldwide, they are one of the largest families of Diptera, surpassed in numbers of species only by the Tipulidae (14,000), Tachinidae (9,200), Syrphidae (5,800), Asilidae (5,600), Ceratopogonidae (5,300), and Dolichopodidae (5,100). They occur in a variety of habitats and ecosystems (from ca. 10 km from the Arctic Ocean in Canada through all latitudes as far south as Tierra del Fuego; and at altitudes from over 3500 m in the Himalayas to 200 m below sea level at the shores of the Dead Sea). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and also many oceanic islands. The family has a remarkable range in size (from some Exoprosopa with wingspans of more than 60 mm to the tiny Apolysis that can be as small as 1.5 mm in length) and variety of shapes (e.g., Systropus mimicking ammophiline wasps; Bombomyia mimic- king bumblebees). The adults of the larger species are powerful and agile fliers, rivaling the syrphid flies in their ability to hover and move in all directions while in flight. With many species possessing colorful patterns of stripes and spots on the wings and bodies, bee flies are often some of the most striking in appearance of all the Diptera. Individuals can often be seen either resting in the open on trails or on rocks or twigs sunning themselves, or feeding on a variety of flowering plants. -

Six species are recognized and intraspecific morphological variation is documented in several species. A phylogeny of Eulonchus based on DNA sequence data of three molecular markers (COI, CAD, and 16S) is presented and relationships of species are discussed in the light of biogeography and host usage. All six species of Eulonchus are redescribed using natural language descriptions exported from a character matrix, and a key to species is presented. Lectotypes are designated for E. sapphirinus Osten Sacken, E. smaragdinus Gerstaecker, and E. tristis Loew. Bombyliidae is one of the largest Diptera families with more than 4,500 worldwide species. Their species vary from robust to thin, and may be small to large (2-20 mm) and looks like bees or wasps. Adults can often be seen either resting and sunning themselves on trails, rocks or twigs or feeding on fl owering plants as they are nectar feeders. All known larvae of bee fl ies are predators or parasitoids of arthropods. The Brazilian fauna of bombyliids comprises at the moment 110 species of which 12 have been recorded to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. KEYWORDS. Greenwalt, Jonathan G. Wingerath, and Neal L. Evenhuis ABSTRACT In this study, two new species of anthracine bee flies are described and one previ- ously described species is reassessed. Anthrax succini Greenwalt and Evenhuis sp. nov. is the first of the very speciose genus Anthrax and only the second bombyliid to be described from Dominican amber. The previously described Anthrax dentoni Lewis, 1969 was re-examined and reassigned to Anthracinae incertae sedis due to lack of morphological detail required for generic assignment. Eoanomala melas Greenwalt and Evenhuis gen. and sp. nov. is described from the Middle Eocene oil shales of the Kishenehn Formation. Eoanomala melas contains a number of character states that are not found together in any extant genera and, although it may fit within the tribe Vil- lini, it does not appear to be closely related to the extant constituents of that clade. The endemic Australian bee fly genus Eristalopsis Evenhuis, 1985 (Bombyliidae: Bombyliinae) is reviewed including 11 new species: E. aurata sp.n., E. concava sp.n., E. danielsorum sp.n., E. flava sp.n., E. maculata sp.n., E. minor sp.n., E. parva sp.n., E. rubra sp.n., E. smarti sp.n., E. uniformis sp.n., E. wrightae sp.n. In addition, we generate a morphological phylogeny including all recognised species. This genus can easily be distinguished from other Australian genera in the subfamily Bombyliinae by having a 2-segmented antennal flagellum, cell br longer than cell bm, crossvein m-m in apical half of cell dm, crossvein r-m much longer than crossvein m-m, abdominal tergites with black and yellow pattern, and female genitalia without sand chamber. -

Schlinger b a Department of Entomology, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA b The World Spider Parasitoid Laboratory, Santa Ynez, CA, USA Received 16 May 2006; revised 19 July 2006; accepted 13 August 2006 Available online 24 August 2006 Abstract The Wrst formal analysis of phylogenetic relationships among small-headed Xies (Acroceridae) is presented based on DNA sequence data from two ribosomal (16S and 28S) and two protein-encoding genes: carbomoylphosphate synthase (CPS) domain of CAD (i.e., rudi- mentary locus) and cytochrome oxidase I (COI). DNA sequences from 40 species in 22 genera of Acroceridae (representing all three sub- families) were compared with outgroup exemplars from Nemestrinidae, Stratiomyidae, Tabanidae, and Xylophagidae. Parsimony and Bayesian simultaneous analyses of the full data set recover a well-resolved and strongly supported hypothesis of phylogenetic relation- ships for major lineages within the family. Molecular evidence supports the monophyly of traditionally recognised subfamilies Philopoti- nae and Panopinae, but Acrocerinae are polyphyletic. Panopinae, sometimes considered “primitive” based on morphology and host-use, are always placed in a more derived position in the current study. Furthermore, these data support emerging morphological evidence that the type genus Acrocera Meigen, and its sister genus Sphaerops, are atypical acrocerids, comprising a sister lineage to all other Acroceri- dae. Based on the phylogeny generated in the simultaneous analysis, historical divergence times were estimated using Bayesian methodol- ogy constrained with fossil data. -
