Backhuys Publishers, Leiden. xlviii + ix 756 pp. INTRODUCTION Bombyliids, or bee flies as they are commonly called, comprise a diverse and speciose assemblage of brachycerous flies. With more than 4,500 species known worldwide, they are one of the largest families of Diptera, surpassed in numbers of species only by the Tipulidae (14,000), Tachinidae (9,200), Syrphidae (5,800), Asilidae (5,600), Ceratopogonidae (5,300), and Dolichopodidae (5,100). They occur in a variety of habitats and ecosystems (from ca. 10 km from the Arctic Ocean in Canada through all latitudes as far south as Tierra del Fuego; and at altitudes from over 3500 m in the Himalayas to 200 m below sea level at the shores of the Dead Sea). They are found on all continents except Antarctica and also many oceanic islands. The family has a remarkable range in size (from some Exoprosopa with wingspans of more than 60 mm to the tiny Apolysis that can be as small as 1.5 mm in length) and variety of shapes (e.g., Systropus mimicking ammophiline wasps; Bombomyia mimic- king bumblebees). The adults of the larger species are powerful and agile fliers, rivaling the syrphid flies in their ability to hover and move in all directions while in flight. With many species possessing colorful patterns of stripes and spots on the wings and bodies, bee flies are often some of the most striking in appearance of all the Diptera. Individuals can often be seen either resting in the open on trails or on rocks or twigs sunning themselves, or feeding on a variety of flowering plants. -

41 AUSTRALIAN BOMBYLIID^ AND CYRTID^ (DIPTERA). By G. H. Hardy. Plates XVI. and XVII. (Read 11th July, 1921.) This catalogue of the Bomhyliidse and Cyrtidse of Aus- tralia contains a key to the genera, and the description of two new species belonging to genera in which no previous species have been described from Australia. Also, there are numerous synonyms suggested, and a number of species have been placed in the genera they more readily conform to than those in which they were originally placed. BOMBYLIID^. This study of the Bornbyliidse is based upon several important collections. One of these, the Macleay Museum collection, contains a large number of species, many of which appear to be new, and it forms the basis for the study of the species described from Australia. The writer's own collec- tion contains species conforming to most of those described from Tasmania by White, and also contains specimens from Western Australia and New South Wales. A small, but very valuable, collection formed by Dr. E. W. Ferguson, contains some specimens identified by White by comparison with Walker's types in the British Museum, and has been valu- able in establishing the identity of some of the species. Other specimens, including those in the Australian Museum, the Queensland Museum, and the Agricultural Department of Queensland, have also been examined. Much of the material in the above collections is inferior in condition, and as many of the species are closely related, making the differences between them difficult to determine from old specimens, it is advisable to wait till sufficient new material has accumulated before revising the species within the various genera. -

India: 103 (Part 1-2) : 67-73, 2004 SOME BEE-FLIES (BOMBYLIIDAE : DIPTERA) FROM THAR DESERT DHRITI BANERJEE AND B ULGANIN MITRA Zoological Survey of India, M-Block, New Alipore, Kolkata-700 053 INTRODUCTION The members of the family Bombyliidae known as, bee-flies are usually dominant in the tropics and subtropics. They are one of those economically important group of the suborder Brachycera, and act as pollinators in forests, and of agricultural crops. The Great Indian desert popularly known as Thar desert covers part of the four Indian states viz. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The present account on Bombyliidae fauna pertains to the state of Rajasthan and Gujarat as this is the area which has been h~~t explored and studied faunisticall y . Our knowledge of the bee-fly fauna of the Thar desert is limited. Kumar & Kumar (1996) have reported only 2 species under 2 genera from this area, and recently Parui and Mitra (2000) also reported another 3 species under 2 genera. The present study revealed 10 species of bee-flies under 8 genera of 4 subfamilies. Of them 5 species (* marked) under 4 genera of 4 subfamilies are reported for the first time from the Indian part of Thar desert area. Office, M- Block, New Alipore, Kolkata – 700053, West Bengal, India; [email protected] Abstract Present communication reports 167 species belonging to 139 genera of 42 families under 6 orders of insects from the tea gardens of North Bengal. Of them, Lepidoptera shares maximum number of species (77), followed by Hemiptera (29), Diptera (24), Coleoptera (19), Odonata (12) and Orthoptera (06). Among them, 20 species of Lepidoptera, 05 species of Hemiptera, 05 species of Coeloptera and 03 species of Orthoptera are found as tea pests. Besides this, 01 species of Diptera and Odonata are found as predators of tea pest. In addition to this, 14 species of Hemiptera, 11 species of Coleoptera and 09 species of Lepidoptera reported as pests/borers of other crops and timber plants. In addition to this, 03 species of are also found. ABSTRACT TRAUTWEIN, MICHELLE DENEE. Multi-gene Phylogenetics to Resolve Key Areas of the Fly Tree of Life. (Under the direction of Brian M. Wiegmann.) FLYTREE (an NSF Assembling the Tree of Life project) is a large collaborative project aimed at reconstructing relationships among major lineages of Diptera. Previous morphological and molecular work, along with preliminary analyses of phylogenomic and total evidence data sets from FLYTREE, have provided evidence that while much of the fly tree of life can be confidently resolved, some regions remain challenging to decipher. Flies are a species-rich lineage of insects that originated more than 240 MYA in the Mesozoic. Ancient radiations, particularly if they occurred rapidly, can be difficult to resolve, even with large amounts of data. Phylogenetic inference can be misled by both systematic and stochastic error. The reliance on rigorous data exploration to decipher phylogenetic signal from noise can be crucial to the accurate recovery of evolutionary relationships. This study utilizes multiple nuclear genes and data exploration to address three persistently problematic regions of dipteran evolution. The first chapter evaluates the relationships of the lower brachyceran superfamily Asiloidea, the putative sister-group to Eremoneura (Cyclorrhapha + Empidoidea). CAD + 28S support traditional asiloid clades and recover multiple hypotheses for the sister group to higher flies, primarily due to the indeterminate placement of the family Bombyliidae (bee flies) and the enigmatic genus Hilarimorpha. The genus Apystomyia is strongly supported as sister to Cyclorrhapha. Taxon stability and the effects of additional genes are explored. The second chapter addresses the phylogenetics of the subfamilies of Bombyliidae by analyzing CAD + 28S alone and with morphology. -
