Biographical / Historical William Henry Beecher (1802-1889), theologian, son of Lyman Beecher, was a home missionary on the Western Reserve, and later held charges in Putman, Ohio and North Brookfield, Massachusetts. His daughter Mary Ward Beecher held correspondence with Louis H. D. Crane, Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, whom she had contacted through a personal advertisement in a North Brookfield newspaper. Louis H.D. Crane was killed in action at the battle of Cedar Mountain in August 1862. Scope and Contents Correspondence between Mary Ward Beecher and Louis H.D. Crane; Mary's letters to her friends and relatives, a volume of her poetry, three sermons and poem by William Henry Beecher, miscellaneous letters, family photographs and ephemera. Processing Information The collection was cataloged by Harriet McLune in June 1975. In 2020, Brooke M. Black created a finding aid.
