Architecture of the Millennium: Catharine Beecher, Domestic Economy, and Social Reform Abstract This article discusses Catherine Beecher's ideas about how women, as the Christian moral center and teachers, could reform American society. She put homemakers at a center of power, since she believed that they would be able to not only teach children to become true Christian citizens, but reform men as well. -

Criticisms of these two groups could often be found in the same northern evangelical journal, if not on the same page. Words such as “despotism” and “tyranny” described both the theological condi- tion of the Catholic Church and the political condition of the South. Slavery and Catholicism were labeled incompatible with republican insti- tutions and bereft of the virtues necessary to sustain a democratic people. -

Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Its History, Its Issues, and Its Consequences Abstract: This research paper analyzes Harriet Beecher Stowe’s most influential and successful work, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Although Uncle Tom’s Cabin began as a simple novel written by a woman who was both a wife and mother, it grew to be one of the strongest antislavery books and was even credited with giving the impetus to initiate the Civil War. Stowe incorporated several strongly debated issues of her time in the novel, including slavery, alcohol temperance, and gender roles. However, she was careful to work within the accepted social boundaries and was thus able to appeal to many groups through her novel. Nevertheless, Uncle Tom’s Cabin was highly controversial and sparked a storm of discussion and action from the entire world. This paper explores Stowe’s life, the issues contained within the novel and their presentation, and the reactions of the American public and the world. Stowe herself was a good wife and mother, and her accomplishment is astonishing for both its near-radical ideas and for its traditional presentation,. Some of the strength of the novel is drawn from Stowe’s own life experiences and struggles, further intensifying the message of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Finney began a career in ministry that was to have far- reaching implications for the religious as well as the civil life of the people of the United States. In July of that year he was ordained by the Presbytery of St. Lawrence, and assigned as a missionary to the little towns of Evans Mills and Antwerp in Jefferson County, New York. Under the vivid preaching of this ex-lawyer a wave of revivalism began to sweep through the whole region.^ Following the revival of 1824-27, Finney carried the religious awakening into Philadelphia, New York City, and Rochester, New York. -

MARCHANT LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA APRIL 2012 Introduction While touring America during the early 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville reflected upon the religious character of the young country. As he described America’s founding, he captured the interconnection between the country’s Protestant piety and political system: “Most of English America has been peopled by men who, having shaken off the authority of the Pope, acknowledged no other religious supremacy; they brought, therefore, into the New World a form of Christianity which I can only describe as democratic and republican. From the start, politics and religion were in agreement and have continued to be so ever since.”1 While people widely acknowledge that America was founded by people seeking religious freedom, many fail to recognize the fundamentally Protestant and largely anti-Catholic character of this undertaking. The pervasiveness of anti-Catholicism in early America and the dramatic scenes it produced prompt reflections on this frequently overlooked influence on national development. Hanging an unpopular politician or tax collector in effigy and tarring and feathering were both Revolutionary protests that have become familiar images of America’s early history. However, before the colonists protested their British government, they had years of practice publicly protesting Catholicism on Pope’s Day. Each November 5, Englishmen in the mother country and in her colonies paraded papal effigies and carts through the streets, celebrating the preservation of English Protestantism as they vilified Catholicism.2 Another evidence of widespread anti-Catholicism was the refusal to observe the December 25 holiday. -

A desire to know more of our ancestors has resulted in forming this Genealogy of a part of the Beecher Family from early history, leading down from the first emi grants to the West Haven and Southbury line of Beech ers, collected and compiled by R. Beecher Hughes, as sisted by Mrs. H. C. Bennett, of Southbury, grand daughter of Alanson Beecher, and also by Mrs. G. H. Fowler, of New Haven, grand-daughter of Nathaniel Beecher. Information has been obtained from many sources, including Colonial Records, Historical Works, Town Records, Probate Records, History of " Ancient Wood bury," and other Towns, Family Genealogies, Private Records, Obituary Notices, and Family Records. The following letter from the Rev. Luther Fitch Beecher, D. D., of Brookline, Mass., relating to the Beecher name previous to the emigration of the John Beecher family to Boston, in 1637, and to New Haven, in 1638, is thought to be of sufficient interest to insert it here as an introduction to this History of a branch of the Beecher Family. Harbin June 1980 MANUSCRIPT DIVISION Scope Note The Beecher Family Papers consist of inter-family correspondence between 1832 and 1883. The progenitors Truman A. Beecher and Statira Brown and their progeny are the family members around whom the collection is built. The papers that are deposited in the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center are all xerox copies. These copies were made from the originals that were in the possession of a descendant of the Beecher family. Mrs. Williston Lofton, wife of a then Howard University faculty member was instrumental in gaining possession of the copies. The Beecher Family is the same family in which Harriet Beecher Stowe was a member, however her descendants cannot be traced through the information contained in these papers as we have them here. The strength of the collection is the fact that the family's correspondence had been kept and that the family members kept in touch with each other. -

Forum on Public Policy “Moral Philosophy and Curricular Reform”:Catharine Beecher and Nineteenth-Century Educational Leadership for Women Gladys S. Lewis, Professor, Department of English, University of Central Oklahoma Catharine Beecher, daughter to Lyman Beecher and reared in New England Calvinism, struggled against it as a means of acquiring life orientation. Convinced of the mind‟s superiority in resolving moral and ethical matters, she developed pioneering views on women‟s education with its three linchpins which became known as moral philosophy: transference of soul salvation from theological to social grounds; creation of a moral code to regulate behavior without the presence of an angry God; and assumption of a new class of moral guardians to promote this code. In 1823, she opened The Hartford Female Seminary, in Hartford, Connecticut, and went on to establish the Western Female Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. She helped in the formation of women‟s colleges in Burlington, Iowa, Quincy, Illinois, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Although Beecher later incorporated support for childhood education, her priority was to women‟s education as teachers and writers in her curricular advances. A review of her educational program, its curriculum, her emphasis on physical health for women, the way she changed the role of teaching as a career for women, and her extensive writings shows the far-reaching influence of Catharine Beecher in nineteenth-century education in opening educational and writing careers to women. Catharine Beecher‟s energies and accomplishments flowed naturally from her family and the example of her father. The Beechers were a formidably energetic group, ceaselessly generating qualities of tension and anxiety that they aimed outward into their culture, leaving a deep imprint on the nineteenth century and keeping their mutual loyalties miraculously intact.
