North and South 1820–1860 Why It Matters At the same time that national spirit and pride were growing throughout the country, a strong sectional rivalry was also developing. Both North and South wanted to further their own economic and political interests. The Impact Today Differences still exist between the regions of the nation but are no longer as sharp. Zellner: Reflections of a White Southerner in the Freedom Struggle BOB ZELLNER REFLECTIONS OF A WHITE SOUTHERNER IN THE FREEDOM STRUGGLE Preamble Eastern Kentucky University's Chautauqua Lecture Series theme, “Living with Others: Challenges and Promises,” certainly resonates with my life, my experiences and my work for human rights. I have found that a proactive approach to living with others provides a strong antidote to close-mindedness, hate and violence. Living with others peacefully, harmoniously and joyfully broadens and liberates one’s life. This sharply contrasts with my Southern upbringing during the forties and fifties, when white supremacy and male chauvinism led many southerners to be narrow minded and reactionary. Juxtaposing challenge with promise, as the Chautauqua theme does, is also compatible with my philosophy of life, relying as I do on dialectics, the unity of opposites and the social gospel. -

The Mid-South Flyer Spring 2017 A Publication of the Mid-South Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society, Inc Spring Meeting Boyhood memories of a special steam engine Back in the day, most young boys developed a fascination for trains from playing with their first toy train set, or in more recent times, from watching Thomas the Tank Engine on TV. But in the case of MidSouth member Warren Jones, a childhood infatuation for a certain steam engine ignited a life-long love for trains, and steam engines in particular. That special steam engine was Gainesville Midland #301, a 2-8-0 Consolidation-type locomotive built in 1920 by Baldwin Locomotive Works. No. 301 was a familiar sight Gainesville Midland #301 around Warren’s childhood home in Gainesville, Georgia, where the railroad literally ran through his back yard. Warren recounts growing up in a railroad family and his love affair with the Gainesville Midland in an article ap- pearing in Good Old Days Magazine. He will reprise his story with personal anecdotes and photographs at the next meeting of the MidSouth Chapter on Saturday, April 22, at 2 PM in the historic Leeds Depot. The following article excerpts provide a preview of Warren’s presentation. “The year was 1952 in Gainesville, Georgia. I was ten years old, and the location was a small Southern Railroad section house with the Gainesville Midland Railroad New Holland branch forming the boundary of the back yard, a short stone’s throw from the house. The house faced the Southern double track mainline, a long stone’s throw away. -

Prototype Consists Southern Railway - The Tennessean The Tennessean was a secondary streamliner run jointly by the Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western between Washington, DC, and Memphis, Tennessee. This was Southern’s third entry into the Washington-Memphis market, and was quite clearly a secondary train when compared to the likes of the Crescent or the Southerner. The Southern shepherded the train from Washington to Lynchburg, Virginia, where the N&W took over to Consist Bristol, Tennessee. He said that when I discussed railroad issues, that I "spoke from the heart". He then asked me if I was interested in taking part in the yearly NS awards event held every March in Norfolk. Of course, I said yes, because I knew that NS pulls out the red carpet for this prestigious event. However it wasn't until February 2010 that I learned what my duties would be. I had been chosen to take the stage and announce all the safety award winners for the entire Maintenance of Way division. The event was held on March 9-10, 2010 at the Marriott Waterside Hotel in Norfolk. Considering the fact that Suzie had never seen the ocean, I decided to build a family vacation around this event. So we packed up the car and headed east until we ran out of land, and we exited into downtown Norfolk. The railroad provided us lodging for the first night, and I checked into the Sheraton Norfolk Waterfront on Tuesday March 9, 2010, grabbed a bite for lunch then headed across the street to the Marriott to register, pick up my name badge and itinerary, and find some familiar faces in a sea of employees.
