Rosi Hertlein graduated from the renowned high school for Graphic and Design, Nuremberg, Germany in 1979. Her greatest influence at this time was her teacher, textile artist Annelie Weinstein, who became her friend and mentor. After graduating, Rosi decided to pursue a professional career in music. But her love for painting, textile art, graphic design and mobiles never died. Some of her paintings were used as record - and later CD covers, her mobiles were used as scenery in theatrical productions: “DaDaNewYorkDaDanynyDaDa” in 2001 and “legal fiction” in 1996. Until now, she has not pursued a gallery show of her works, but sculptor Alain Kirili exhibited a series of her paintings in his loft in Manhattan. Rosi collaborates with painter, sculptor and performance artist Judith Haman on a regular basis. This summer the two performed “Tea-cup” performance- concerts on a popular street in Hamburg, Germany and at Gallery “Blinzelbar”. In another collaboration with performance and video artist Birgit Ramsauer, a video was produced featuring Rosi’s music and artistic concepts; it was shown at the Bienale in Venezia 2009. Painter , who is also her musician colleague, is preparing a show of Rosi’s and his paintings.

On October 14th 2009, radio station WKCR featured her work in a 3 hour musical portrait plus interview and life recording. Rosi’s musical background is divided equally between the worlds of improvisation and contemporary classical. She began serious study of both violin and piano in the late 70’s, before switching her focus to violin and vocals in the 80’s. She earned a degree in Sociology in 1989, subsequently traveling to Ghana to study the links between society and music in Western Africa. After returning to Germany, she began teaching and working as a composer, violinist, singer and percussionist in a variety of settings. She continued to learn during this period, and participated in workshops with musicians such as AMM’s Keith Rowe and violinist Melcolm Goldstein and vocal instructors Ela Sammelo and Prof. Ingrid Kremling. Upon moving to , she studied vocals with Hugh Murphy and Vera Satulsky.

Her work in resent years includes, but is not limited to: collaborations with multi instrumentalist Joe McPhee, and ensemble works with Daniel Carter; she performs as one fifth of composer ’ “New Circle Five”. In June 2002 she premiered ’s “With Blazing Eyes and Open’d Mouth” with the “Sound Vision Orchestra” and Mr. Taylor on piano. She performs with ’s “African-American Legacy Project. She performes with her band “The Improvising Chamber Ensemble (ICE) and recorded the CD “Two Letters I’ll Keep” in 1999. This project features her particular compositions and concepts. She recorded the CD “Red Morocco” with soprano saxophonist Joe Giardullo; and the CDs “Introspection” and “Near To the Wild Heart” with tenor saxophonist Ivo Perlman and toured in Brazil in 2008. During the same time period, she also performed and recorded with Stanley Schumacher’s “Music Now” ensemble. From Oct. 2006 until summer 2008, she collaborated with the Wendy Osserman Dance Company as composer and musician in a variety of performances at the Chelsea Art Museum and the Duke Theater. Presently she is performing with John Tchicai.

She worked as Production Assistant to composer Baikida Carroll for several theater productions including The Oedipus Plays, Uncle Vanya and the 2008 A Seagull in the Hamptons by Emily Mann. She received a “meet the composer’s creative connections” grand for her collaboration with the Wendy Osserman Dance Company in 2007. She received a “meet the composer grand” for music performed in the “New Dance Alliance Performance Mix Festival” with dancer Nuria Divi in 2004; and she received the prestigious Ledig House grand to participate in the international residency for musicians and composers in Omi, NY in 1999.

As a Teaching Artist she has worked for “Music Outreach” in New York City’s Public Schools 2003-2010; in 2008; she worked as Teaching Artist (choral instructions) at PS. 21 Staten Island, for Sundog Theatre NY and at Trinity Lutheran School, Staten Island, NY as Teaching Artist for sculpture, drawing and collage . Since 1999 she is the teacher for violin and vocals at Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute, Staten Island, NY; and she taught violin at Turtle Bay Music School, New York, NY from 2000-2008.

While being busy as a musician and teaching artist, she is constantly creating artwork: mobiles, paintings, textiles, sculptures and intends to show her work in the near future!
