BALLA* I. Introduction Neogene volcanites of the Carpathian region are generally classified as being either in the calc-alkaline (andesite, dacite, rhyolite) or in the alkaline-basaltic series. Plate-tectonic oriented interpretations are usually based on an idea of long standing, according to which the calc-alkaline volcanism of the Carpathian region is analogous to that of the recent island arcs. Two variations of this conception have been proposed. 1. The standpoint represented first of all by Roumanian and Italian geologists [Bleahu et al. 1973; Boccaletti et al. 1973a, 1973b; R ädulescu and Sändulescu 1973] has the following characteristic features : 1.1. Practically all volcanites form a uniform arc extending from Central Slovakia through North Hungary, East Slovakia, the Soviet Transcarpathians and North Roumania as far as the Harghita Mountains (Fig. 1.). 1.2. This arc lies on the inner side of the Carpathian fold system and is related to the same subduction processes which brought into being the Carpathians. 1.3. This subduction consumed the oceanic or suboceanic crust of the basin where the flysch of the Outer Carpathians had been accumulated. 1.4. The alkaline-basaltic volcanism spatially follows the calc-alkaline one, it is related to the inner side of the arc and can be considered analogous to the magmatism with regard to the spreading of the interarc basins. 2. According to the Soviet school the above statements hold only for the Vihorlat- Gutäi and Cälimani— Harghita mountain chains whereas older (Miocene) volcanites are related to other processes [Naumenko and G oncharuk 1969; G ofshtein 1975], namely to subduction within the Carpathians [D anilovich 1975]. This opinion is shared by SzÁ- deczky-K ardoss [1971] who was the first to give an outline sketch of the Tertiary subduc tion belts and the related volcano chains [Szádeczky-K ardoss 1975], (Fig. 2). There are also other interpretations of the Carpathian neogene volcanism, based on plate tectonics. The possible connection with mantle diapir was first suggested by Szá decz ky-K ardoss (1967). The mantle diapir model was elaborated in more detail by Stegena et al. (1975) who, in their main text, left open the question whether the calc-alkaline volcan ism was linked with mantle diapir or with subduction. However, the figure which illustrated their statement (Fig. 3) should be considered as a definite standpoint. The hypothesis has the following characteristic features : 2.1. The calc-alkaline volcanites are clustered in an area bounded by the arc of the Carpathian fold system (Fig. 4). 2.2. This area shows no obvious connection with the tectonics of the Carpathian moun tain system, its origin is only indirectly related - through the mantle diapir - to the sub duction which had taken place along the Carpathians (Fig. 3). 2.3. The character of the flysch-basin of the Outer Carpathians is of no significance from the viewpoint of neogene volcanism. 8 Z. Balia MICROPLATES И Й ANDESITIC VOLCANISM | ? • Hungarian Geographical Names in English Language Publications
This paper forms part of an extensive study on the geographical names of present Hungary. Probably, this is the first attempt to introduce the English language readers to some of the practical questions of using the English translation of Hungarian toponyms in maps and publications. (The use of Hungarian street and other public area names as well as administrative units and institution names etc. in English is not discussed here.) In Hungary, there is a rich literature of writing foreign geographical names. These studies discuss the Hungarian transliteration of those names which are written in non-Latin script and the rules or traditions of transcribing those names which are not written by letters but by various "pictures" of the ideas or objects. Further, the use of exonyms or conventional names – due to the specific character of Hungarian language and to the fact that the language is spoken by millions well beyond the present borders of the country – is also a popular topic for Hungarian cartographers, geographers and historians.

  • 1. the Precedents and the Aims the Water, Stored in He Carbonate
    1. The precedents and the aims The water, stored in he carbonate rocks support the fourth part of the human population. This is the reason why the karsts are so interested for the science beside their natural and environmental values. In the last few decades the water claims have importantly increased all over the world so the value of the usable supplies have also increased. But because of the over-using of karstic waters they were the most attractable examples of deceasing of the usable water supplies booth by the point of quality and quantity. These days are the clear and determined aim of the human societies the sustainable development of the drinking water supplies. In the case of the karstic water system it means the knowledge of the exact balance of the input and the output. The „deep karst” of the Transdanubian range reserves the most important water supply in Central Europe and the 70% of Hungary’ one. Nowadays it give the drinking water support of 1,5 Million people but the capacity of the system is more because the input is at least 10 m3/minute. However it is already now over used by a point of view. Firstly the effects of the water extraction of mines have been being yet. Secondly the springs thought existing by few decades will feed high polluted streams and lakes so their water quantity will necessary for the decreasing of the waste water concentration. The distribution of the water supply is a real conflict in this region because of the density of the population and the structure of the economy.

BALOGH INTRODUCTION The Hungarian occurrences of the Oligocene are confined to three geological units: 1. the Paleogene Basin of North Hungary—South Slovakia; 2. the Karad— Buzsak Region; 3. the so-called "Great Plain Flysch Belt" (Fig. 1). The last-men- tioned two have been explored only by wildcatting and are not yet known satis- factorily. Therefore only the North Hungarian Oligocene is discussed here. The North Hungarian Paleogene has been the subject of detailed geological— paleontological investigations for a century. Such an interest was initially stimulated mainly by the presence of Eocene, Lower and Upper Oligocene brown coal deposits Fig. 1. The occurrences of the Oligocene sediments in North Hungary. 1. Because of the block-faulted tectonics; the close similarity between the Upper Oligocene and Lower Miocene lithofacies; the extreme disproportions in the dis- tribution of entirely core-drilled boreholes and the slow progress observable throughout Europe in the improvement of stratigraphical-paleontological methods, it was not until now that the geologists have arrived at gaining a clear knowledge of the virtual stratigraphie range of the ;Paleogene units under consideration. However, the road leading to this knowledge has been paved by the continually reviving "boundary discussions" aimed at both defining the Eocene—Oligocene and Oligocene—Miocene boundaries and correlating the Eocene subbasin fillings.

THE GENESIS OF NON-KARSTIC NATURAL CAVITIES AS ELUCIDATED RY HUNGARIAN EXAMPLES* Bv GY. OZORAY In Hungary, just like elsewhere in the world, the cavities of natural origin and of sizes passable By man are for the most part of karstic genesis. The cavities of non- karstic rocks are of smaller numBer and, first of all, of much smaller size (mostly Be tween 1 and 5 metres. The greatest non-karstic cave in Hungary, the Csörgőlyuk near Agasvár Peak in the Mátra Mountains is not longer than 139 metres). However, the importance of their study is given By their manifold genetical and morphological variaBility. Let us consider, moreover, that for the most part the karstic cavities were pre-formed By much the same factors as the non-karstic ones. The traces of these pre formed features were later partly or entirely effaced By karst processes (intense disso lution, and suBsurface erosion developed later). Consequently, the cavities of non- karstic rocks may Be parallelized in a numBer of cases with the emBryonal stages of karst caves. It would Be an attractive idea to look into the proBlem as to how purely tectonical (i. e. non-karstic) cavities are turned into karst caves. However, this would lead us astray from the central topic of our paper, and it would overlap the topics of other papers in preparation or already published. (E.g., part of this set of proBlems is treated in detail By G. L á n g ’s paper on the cavities of ,,T ” cross section of the upper Triassic limestones in the Gerecse Mountains).
