Truppf Truppf tlhrer (Rank in the OT Equivalent to Venn Venaessung (Surveying) Vertr Vertreter (Deputy) ZVL Zentral Verpflegungslager (Main Food Supply Depot) Introduction In view of the fact that only a minor part of OT personnel is identifiable by military Order of Battle standards, information in respect to the OT proper, given in this part is confined to locations of OT sectors as controlled by OT staffs on various levels, from the Central HQ in BERLIN down to local supervisory staffs of local OT sectors. Details as to composition of OT personnel units will be found in the appropriate sections of the text, viz.: Transport units (NSKK-OT and Legion SPEER) in UPb; Security Guard units (Schutzkommando), in IlPe; Worker detachnents and units (Bautrupps, Arbeitstrupps, Bereitschaften, Hundert­ schaften, Front-OT Brigaden, Regimenter, Battalionen, Kompanien), in IIIBb, para.ll^ to 123: Penal units attached to tte OT, in IVBn, The OT Order of Battle in Germany requires some special ccranent. There the sector boundaries of the Einsatz coincide with those of the Rtistungsinspektion (Armament Inspectorate). The Chief of the former, moreover, co-operates closely with the Rflstungs­ kommission (Aimament Commission) located in his sector. The OBL co-operates similarly on a lower level with the Rustungskomaando (Armament HQ). Co-operation between Einsatz HQ and the competent Party Gauleiter is likewise close. Accordingly, the boundaries of OT sectors in Germany have been given on the basis of Rustungs­ inspektionen and Party Gaue. The official designation of the Einsatz is given when known, otherwise the equivalent is given in terms talpo.itof the corresponding Rtlstungsinspektion. The OT has at its disposal not only the Army construction agencies (Heeresbauflrater), but, since the summer of 1944, it has also controlled similar agencies of the GAP, the German Navy and the SS, and their equipment. Historyi&t Ban-OTZ is the result of the merger of itat Bau with OTZ in June 1944, as part of the administrative re­ organisation which put the OT in control of construction within the Reich and in Norway, Denaark and Northern Italy. The growth of the EG WEST can be well followed from the number of OBLs. in the EG WEST at various times. Advocates for the Landscape: Alwin Seifert and Nazi Environmentalism Peter Staudenmaier ABSTRACT Reexamining debates on ostensibly green facets of Nazism, this article offers a case study of the "landscape advocates" led by Alwin Seifert from 1934 to 1945. In contrast to previous accounts focused on the role of the landscape advocates in the construction of the Autobahn, the article assesses their work on a wide range of projects in Nazi Germany and across occupied Europe. It argues that existing scholarship has not fully recognized the extent of the landscape advocates' involvement in Nazi structures and has sometimes misunderstood the relationship between their environmental activities and blood and soil ideology. Seven decades after the defeat of Hitler's dictatorship, the European landscape still bears the scars of war and genocide.

    Project Sounds in the silence – glossary of terms1 Allies of the Second World War The Allies of the Second World War (formalised by Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942), were the countries that together opposed German, Japanese and Italian aggression during the Second World War (1939–1945). Germany, Japan and Italy were called the Axis powers. At the start of the war on 1 September 1939, the Allies consisted of France, Poland and the United Kingdom, as well as their dependent states, such as British India. Within days they were joined by the independent Dominions of the British Commonwealth: Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. After the start of the German invasion of North Europe until the Balkan Campaign, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, and Yugoslavia joined the Allies. After first having cooperated with Germany in invading Poland whilst remaining neutral in the Allied-Axis conflict, the Soviet Union joined the Allies in June 1941 after being invaded by Germany. The United States officially joined in December 1941 after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. China had already been in a prolonged war with Japan since 1937, but officially joined the Allies in 1941. Civilian Forced Labourers (German: Zivile Zwangsarbeiter) Modern term for forced labourers who were not prisoners of war or concentration camp inmates. In the summer of 1944, there were about 5.7 million civilian foreign workers in the German Reich. They were employed by private companies, government agencies, farmers and families who also provided them with accommodation and kept them under surveillance. This term differs from forced labourers who were prisoners of war (POW), as such under the control of the Wehrmacht and imprisoned in POW camps.

Yet this is the opportunity now afforded to historians in America. Within a short time they will have available documents of the Hitler era in Germany reflecting its origins, causes, ad- ministrative system, philosophy, policies, military system, propa- ganda, and almost every other imaginable feature of significance or interest. For in the National Archives, every month, hundreds of rolls of microfilm are added to the growing collection of material pertaining to Nazi rule. Nor is the material concerned with Germany alone. Vast num- bers of the documents relate to military operations of the Germans outside their borders and to the civilian and military exploitation of conquered and occupied nations. Not only historians concentrating on Germany, therefore, but also those whose primary interests are Russia, Southeastern Europe, France, Italy, Scandinavia, and other Western European countries, as well as the Near and Far East, will find valuable material in the collection of microfilm now being as- sembled at the National Archives. That this wealth of documenta- tion will be available on microfilm, which scholars can either use in the National Archives or purchase for reading in the comfort of their own libraries, is the result of a joint enterprise of the Ameri- can Historical Association and the United States Government.

At Brown, she first worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Department of German Studies, before entering the Ph.D. program of Brown’s History Department in 2006. She received an A.M. in History from Brown in 2007 and passed her preliminary examinations with distinction in 2008 in her major field Modern German History (with Omer Bartov) and her minor fields Modern European History (with Deborah Cohen) and Modern Russian History (with Ethan Pollock.) At Brown, she has worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Departments of History and German Studies, taught several courses in Brown’s Summer Program and an undergraduate seminar on the history Weimar Germany in the History Department.
