Hassan Sajedi2 1Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agricultural Science, University of Guilan, Rasht, Iran 2Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Tarbiat Modares University, Tehran, Iran ABSTRACT Choreutis nemorana (Lepidoptera: Choreutidae) is a generally common pest of fig tree in Iran causing noticeable distortion of the leaves. Application of transgenic plants expressing digestive enzyme inhibitors is one of the safe methods in integrated pest management (IPM) and blocking of carbohydrases by inhibitors represents a safe approach to pest management of C. nemorana. So, identification and characterization of the carbohydrases in gut extract of C. nemorana is necessary for achieving this goal. In this research, some enzymatic properties of α-amylase, α-/β-glucosidases and α-/β-galactosidases from gut of C. nemorana larvae were determined. The optimal pH for α-amylase, α-/β-glucosidases and α-/β- galactosidases was found 11, 6, 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Also, these enzymes reached the highest activity at 55°C for α-amylase, 35 and 45°C for α- and β-glucosidases and 45°C for α- and β-galactosidases, respectively. The zymogram pattern confirmed the presence 3, 2, 4 and 2 bands for α-/β-glucosidases and α-/β-galactosidases, respectively. Among α-/β-glucosidases and α-/β-galactosidases tested, α- galactosidase showed highest thermal stability at 50°C. Nat. Croat., Vol. 29, No. 2, 227-240, 2020, Zagreb. In 2016 and 2017 a survey of the butterflies and moth fauna of the island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik was carried out. A total of 208 species were recorded, which, together with 15 species from the literature, raised the total number of known species to 223. The results of our survey can be used as a baseline for the study of future changes in the Lepidoptera composition on the island. In comparison with the lit- erature records, eight butterfly species can be regarded as extinct from the island. The most probable reason for extinction is the degradation of the grassland habitats due to the natural succession as well as the introduction of the European Rabbit and Indian Peafowl. Their presence has probably had a tremendously detrimental effect on the native flora and fauna of the island. To conserve the Lepidop- tera fauna of the island, and the still remaining biodiversity, immediate eradication of these introduced species is needed. This is the first record reported from Bulgaria. Distribution data, morphological, biological data and life history of the species are presented. Key words: Choreutis nemorana; Ficus carica, Bulgaria INTRODUCTION On 30 September 2016, a damaged fig tree (Ficus carica L.) was noticed in Plovdiv region. The leaves looked skeletonized and whitened even from a distance. On the skeletonized leaves some caterpillars, pupae in white cocoons and many empty pupae in cocoons were remarked. We took some caterpillars and cocoons and kept them in the lab. Two larval specimens which pupated on 2 October emerged on 20 and 23 October respectively. The moth from pupa emerged between 15 and 19 October. This year (2017) at the end of summer on the same fig tree and on two others nearby were observed the same damage. The moths emerged in the end of October. It is the most likely that those moths are from second generation. Probably damages from the first generation were minor and stay unremarkable. The only species that has larvae specialized in eating the leaf tissue on a fig tree is Choreutis nemorana (Hübner, 1799), which is not listed in Bulgaria, this appears to be the first report of this species. DISTRIBUTION C. nemorana (Hübner, 1799) also known as a fig leaf roller or fig-tree skeletonize moth. The species was described by Hübner, 1799.

The new species is outstanding due to the variability of its male genitalia. It is closely related to A. fabriciana (Linnaeus, 1767), and more distantly related to Anthophila threnodes (Walsingham, 1910), which is endemic to Madeira. Based on the DNA barcode, the new species is molecularly very distinct from its closest relative, A. fabriciana, with a pairwise K2P distance of more than 6.5%. The previous record of A. fabriciana from the Canary Islands is based on misidentification, and the species should be removed from the list of Lepidoptera found in the Canary Islands.

Another official find was made at a nursery in Irvine (Orange County) in October 2020. There are reports of this moth in Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura counties on the web site iNaturalist. This moth has not been rated. Therefore, a pest rating proposal is needed. History & Status: Background: Choreutis emplecta is a small moth with a wingspan of approximately 1 cm. The wings are patterned with orange, brown, and white. There is almost no information available on this moth. The genus Choreutis has received insufficient study on a worldwide basis. Therefore, there is significant taxonomic uncertainty among the species. Complicating this is the fact that some type specimens are reported to be lost, which makes morphological comparison of specimens with types impossible. The moth found in southern California appears to be C. emplecta based on the studied morphological characters for which illustrations are available. However, it is possible that 1) other described species of Choreutis may be synonyms of C. emplecta and 2) there may be unrecognized cryptic species currently identified as C. emplecta. Finally, we discuss previous misidentifications of Madeiran choreutids and the occurrence of choreutids on other oceanic islands. Introduction The Lepidoptera fauna of the Madeira Islands consists of only 331 species (Aguiar & Karsholt 2008). This is mainly due to the isolated position of these islands in the Atlantic Ocean, and only to a lesser extent to insufficient collecting efforts. The Macrolepidoptera fauna, and es- pecially the butterflies (Papilionoidea), are considered to be well known, with only a few and mostly invasive species being added in recent years.
