Hell on Wheels: Wicked Towns Along Volume 17, Issue 11 the Union Pacific Railroad November, 2013 uthor and journalist, Dick Kreck, will tell the story of wild and wicked A towns along the Union Pacific Railroad line, Tuesday, November 12, 7–8:30 p.m. With the building of the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1860s, a new era of travel was born. Journeys that had once taken several perilous months now took only days. As the railroad made its way west, overnight settlements, known as “hell on wheels,” sprang up. These instant cities brought opportunity to legitimate businessmen, but also opened the door to gamblers, prostitutes, and thugs. In addition to tales of these towns, Dick Kreck will high- light the heroic individuals who finally established permanent towns in the interior West. Kreck retired from The Denver Post after 38 years as an editor and columnist. He previously worked at the San Francisco Examiner and the Los Angeles Times. He is the author of five other books, including several local best sellers. Copies of his books will be available for purchase and signing.

Musical Moments at Sophie’s Place

erformances feature a variety of musical talent from Littleton and the Denver P metro area. Saturday, November 16, 2–3 p.m.: Acclaimed Celtic guitarist Jerry Barlow will combine music and storytelling to tell the story of the Potato Famine in Ireland, the immigration of the Irish to New York City and Hell's Kitchen, and then the migration West via the railroads and military. Barlow’s music has been played on NPR and in a PBS documentary. His latest CD, Fields and Fences, was one of five nominees for Instrumental Album of the Year by the Independent Music Association. Lord Dunraven: Colorado’s Most Controversial Aristocrat ctor Kurtis Kelly will portray Lord Dunraven, who was one of Colorado’s A most intriguing landowners, and one of the most controversial, Monday, November 25, 2–3 p.m. Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, the 4th Earl of Dunraven, left a tremendous legacy in the American West. His name embellishes Mount Dunraven in Rocky Mountain National Park and Dunraven Pass in Yellow- stone. Discovering Colorado as a hunter in the 1870s, Dunraven eventually settled in Estes Park where through questionable means, he would soon claim dominion over nearly 10,000 acres—stirring accusations of driving out American settlers. His name became associated, perhaps unfairly, with the first murder in Estes Park. And yet, he was popular throughout the U.S.—as a writer, yachtsman, and well-traveled Windham Thomas Wyndham-Quin, 4th journalist. Was Dunraven a scoundrel? Or perhaps one of Colorado’s earliest Earl of Dunraven conservationists? Join the “jury” at this fascinating first-person re-enactment of the life of the “Colorado Earl”—and share in the exciting stories of Colorado’s early days—when tourism was at its dawn. Performer Kurtis Kelly is a stage actor who has been portraying historic characters for over fifteen years. During the summer, he appears in Estes Park’s downtown outdoor storyteller series.
