Four Sherlock Holmes and a Vampire (Who Is Also One of the Aforementioned Sherlock Holmes) A one-page RPG inspired by Justin McElroy v 1.2 written by Andrew J. Young (with thanks to Marty McGuire) The Game In Four Sherlock Holmes and a Vampire (Who Is Also One of the Aforementioned Sherlock Holmes)—officially abbreviated Four Sherlock Holmes and a Vampire—four players play four Sherlock Holmes who team up to solve mysteries and one-up each other. Secretly, one or more Sherlock Holmes are Suspicious Quirks (d6) vampires. Can the four Sherlock Holmes find out who among them is a creature of the night? This game requires paper, pencils, a d6, and a d20. 1. You loathe the smell of garlic. 2. You’re a Transylvanian citizen. Getting Started 3. You’re allergic to vitamin D. Everyone describes their Sherlock Holmes. Players can each play a version of (No sunlight for you!) Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch, Robert Downey Jr., Basil Rathbone, 4. You are a bat enthusiast. Peter Cushing, etc.), or they can create their own wry, observant detective. 5. You have a neck fetish. Everyone rolls in secret to determine their Suspicious Quirk. 6. You are a vampire. (Plus, Setting the Scene choose two of the above.) These four Sherlock Holmes join forces to investigate a terrible crime. One player describes the crime scene in as much detail as they like (leaving out the crime) and then rolls on the Scene Details table. Another player chooses which of those two details to incorporate and then rolls on the Scene Details table again.

Dabney, Melina Kristine (BA/MA Film Studies) Re-mixing Old Character Tropes on Screen: Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and the New Femininity Thesis directed by Professor Melinda Barlow While there is a substantial amount of scholarship on the depiction of African American women in film and television, this thesis exposes the new formations of African American femininity on screen. African American women have consistently resisted, challenged, submitted to, and remixed racial myths and sexual stereotypes existing in American cinema and television programming. Mainstream film and television practices significantly contribute to the reinforcement of old stereotypes in contemporary black women characters. However, based on the efforts of African American producers like Shonda Rhimes, who has attempted to insert more realistic renderings of African American women in her recent television shows, black women’s representation is undergoing yet another shift in contemporary media.

  • From Disney to Disaster: the Disney Corporation’S Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks
From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017).

"Life's most persistent and urgent question is; what are you doing for others?" -MLK OUR VISION For over a decade, MDC has helped establish rewarding relationships between thousands of individuals, businesses and charities who care deeply about the well-being of others and the community. Through our work (video production, event planning & consulting) we want to share stories that matter, organize events that build bridges, highlight extraordinary individuals, create simple and effective ways of giving back, and act as professional matchmakers. Our mission has always been to connect the people who want to help with the people who need help the most. From the start, we've witnessed heartbreaking scenarios where trauma and hardship causes a child or family to feel isolated and hopeless. Despite what we're taught, time is more precious than gold and we strive to make every day, hour and minute count. The world does not stop when tragedy strikes; but good people can and do. We enlist the help of caregivers across every business sector around the globe and rely on them to help us create special moments in time that bring hope and joy to those suffering through hardship. We've created an Active Response Team; an unofficial team of do-gooders who are willing to step up to the plate when needed. And just like the word "team" signifies, together everyone achieves more. MDC works by cause, not by client -- and in doing so, it allows us to foster collaboration and look after the interests of all involved. The impact we make by working together is more powerful and far-reaching than most individuals can achieve on their own.

  • Selected Resources for Understanding Racism
Selected Resources for Understanding Racism The 21st century has witnessed an explosion of efforts – in literature, art, movies, television, and other forms of communication—to explore and understand racism in all of its many forms, as well as a new appreciation of similar works from the 20th century. For those interested in updating and deepening their understanding of racism in America today, the Anti-Racism Group of Western Presbyterian Church has collaborated with the NCP MCC Race and Reconciliation Team to put together an annotated sampling of these works as a guide for individual efforts at self-development. The list is not definitive or all-inclusive. Rather, it is intended to serve as a convenient reference for those who wish to begin or continue their journey towards a greater comprehension of American racism. February 2020 Contemporary Alexander, Michelle. 2010. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Written by a civil rights litigator, this book discusses race-related issues specific to African-American males and mass incarceration in the United States. The central premise is that "mass incarceration is, metaphorically, the New Jim Crow". Anderson, Carol. 2017. White Rage. From the Civil War to our combustible present, White Rage reframes our continuing conversation about race, chronicling the powerful forces opposed to black progress in America. Asch, Chris Myers and Musgrove, George Derek. 2017. Chocolate City: A History of Race and Democracy in the Nation's Capital. A richly researched and clearly written analysis of the history of racism in Washington, DC, from the 18th century to the present, and the efforts of people of color to claim a voice in local government decisionmaking.
