1 Go Educator Training

Library Pilot Initiative and Oculus Education

2 Oculus CA Library Pilot The Oculus CA Library initiative is a pilot program between Facebook and Oculus to bring affordable (VR) into the hands of 90 CA libraries. Goals include learning: • How best to support the needs of librarians and patron visitors in informal education contexts • How best to support future social programming

and lecture events with immersive technology 3 What to Expect This training session should take about 45 minutes and covers the following topics: • Device Operation • Oculus Rooms Instructions • Using the Oculus Store to Install Apps • Common Tech Fixes

4 Oculus Go Operating Your Device

5 What is the Oculus Go?

6 What’s in the Box? Every Oculus Go includes:

• The VR headset with optional top strap • A hand controller with AA battery, and lanyard • A Micro-USB charging cable • An optional eyeglass spacer • Accessories including a lens cloth and user manual

11 Help! Blurry Images If the VR headset lenses are blurry, it usually means the straps just need to be adjusted for fit.

If the lenses are dirty or foggy, you can try cleaning them with the included lens cloth or remove the headset briefly to allow for it to ventilate.

14 Power Duration

On a full charge, the Oculus Go should last between 2-3 hours. This should be enough for a few classroom lessons.

The headsets should be charged between use, and should never be used while still charging.

15 Using Headphones By default, speakers play from the edges of the Oculus Go device. If sound from an app is playing too loudly, try reducing the volume from the top of the device.

If apps are still too loud, you can use headphones by attaching them to the side of the VR headset.

16 Unboxing a New Device Note: The VR headsets in this training session have already been unboxed and configured.

When unboxing a new Oculus Go device, you’ll need to use a mobile device (iOS or Android) to set it up. You can use the same mobile device to setup multiple Go devices.

17 Connecting to Wifi Networks You can either do this from the mobile Oculus app while configuring a new device, or directly from inside your Oculus Go after setup.

If you receive an error while trying to connect to WiFi, you may need to connect your Oculus Go to another WiFi network.

18 19 Captive Portals Networks that use Captive Portals will not work with the initial Oculus Go setup. A captive portal is a web page that prompts you to interact with it before connecting you to the internet.

Captive portals are commonly used by public WiFi networks, guest networks, and libraries. This type of network will not work to setup your Oculus Go, but will work after your initial setup through the Oculus Browser app. 20 Captive Portals, Cont. To use a captive portal with an Oculus Go after it has been configured, when you connect to your library wifi, it will ask you to login with further details.

From the menu, navigate to the “Browser” tab, which will launch a web browser. From here, you should be able to accept the terms of usage like you would a normal computer. Note: you’ll have to repeat this process every 24 hours, also like a normal computer. 21 Managing Multiple Devices When managing more than one Oculus Go device, it is recommended to use the same Oculus account for each. That way, after purchasing an application once, it can be installed across every device.

This is the same account ID assigned to your library with use for the , which usually contains

CAVRLib-00x (where x is a number). 22 Oculus Accounts Note: using the same Oculus account with multiple devices also means those devices won’t be able to use Oculus Rooms with each other.

This is a fix we are working on, the alternative is to create separate accounts for each device with an extra suffix (such as CAVRLib-00x-1).

23 Oculus Go Safety and Facilitation

24 Health and Safety When using VR, keep the following points in mind: • The headset should only be used by individuals 13 years old and up • Take breaks regularly; we recommend a break every 15-20 minutes • Use VR in a clear and safe space • It’s a good idea to have someone assist you,

especially when first trying VR 25

Don’t do this.

26 Full health and safety information for using the Oculus Go can be found at:

oculus.com/legal/health-and-safety-warnings

The Oculus Go can interfere with certain medical devices and may cause discomfort while viewing experiences, so it is important to review these health and safety warnings before using your headset.

27 Safe Usage Spaces Past research has also revealed that it’s imperative to set the atmosphere of a usage area as a “safe space” during VR headset lessons. This helps discourage the following behaviors: • Verbal teasing • Self-image concerns • Physical harassment (hair or makeup) (shoving and poking) • Social media capture

28 Device Cleanup When done, VR headsets should be:

1. Powered down from inside the headset 2. Wiped off using antibacterial wipes

3. Plugged into a charger

29 Using Oculus Rooms

30 Summer Talks Pilot Oculus Education is experimenting with using VR to deliver virtual lectures and programming to those that cannot logistically access physical experiences.

Your participation in the pilot program will help steer resources to ensure that libraries and schools in the future have equitable access to remote educational

programming! 31

Summer Talks Participation If you are participating in the Summer Talks pilot:

1. Signup for a talk slot and provide your account ID 2. Accept the talk host’s Friend Request 3. The day of the talk, accept the Party Request 4. Once in a party, enter the host’s Oculus Room to begin the hangout session!

32 Why Use Oculus Rooms The magic of virtual reality really resonates when cohabitating a space with someone else. In VR, you operate a virtual body, called an avatar, in a mutual space called a room using the Oculus Rooms app.

Oculus Rooms allows you to communicate and

share media with up to 3 other people. 33

Using the Friend List After signing up for a Summer Talk slot, you’ll provide your Oculus account ID. We’ll use that ID to send you a friend request from our host accounts.

To accept a request, navigate to People tab and select “Requests.” Select the check mark next to our host accounts to accept the request. You’ll also

see a “Notification” alert in the menu. 34 35 Accepting a Party Invite After accepting our Friend request, we’ll next send you a Party request.

To accept a Party, navigate to People tab and select “Party.” Select the green phone next to our host accounts to accept the Party request. You’ll also see a “Notification” alert in the menu. Once in a party, you can hear each other talk! 36 37 Entering a Host’s Room Once you have at least two people in your Party, you can enter the party host’s Room together.

From the People tab, select “Parties.” Then, select the Oculus Rooms picture with the text “Meet in [Host Name’s] Room.”

38 39 How to Use Rooms Oculus Rooms is a hangout space to communicate with others. While inside, you can:

• Customize your avatar • Load music, photos, and movies at the Media Area • Play games at the Games Table • Customize the look and decorations of your space

46 If You Need Help If you’re having trouble connecting to the room, make sure: • You’re connected to an active wifi connection (and have accepted terms if you have a captive portal) • Have accepted the host’s friend request • Have accepted the host’s party request • Have entered the Oculus Room of the host (instead

of your own room...which would would be lonely) 47 Using the Oculus Store to Install More Apps

48 Navigating the Oculus Store When you browse content in the Oculus Store, you can view the comfort rating to see if the experience is right for you.

If you’re new to VR, we recommend starting with content that’s rated Comfortable before trying Moderate, Intense or Unrated.

49 50 51 Comfort Ratings

• Comfortable experiences are appropriate for most people, although this rating doesn’t mean that an experience is going to be comfortable for everyone. These experiences generally avoid camera movement, player motion, or disorienting content and effects. • Moderate experiences are appropriate for many but certainly not everyone. These experiences might incorporate some camera movement, player motion, or occasionally disorienting content and effects. • Intense experiences aren’t appropriate for most people, especially those who are new to VR. These experiences incorporate significant camera movement, player motion, or disorienting content and effects.

The Oculus PIN you create for your Oculus account is used to verify your identity and to make it easy to buy things in the Oculus store.

54 55 Suggested Educational Apps Oculus recommends the following educational apps:

• Ocean Rift • People’s House • Mission: ISS • Discovery VR

• Through the Ages • BBC VR

There are plenty more! This is just a sample.
