Porter Rockwell , a notorious rascal and bosom friend of ’ Smith s , was suspected of the attempted assassination ,

The facts thus far mentioned are gathered from encyclopedias and standard histories . “ 6 H s Beadle says , page 5, undreds of licentious villain , - e cut throats and robbers made their way to Nauvoo , wer baptized into the church as a convenient cover for their crimes , and made that their secret headquarters . The Governor says of this trial , as published by the
w as Mormons themselves , that it altogether one of the most curious and irregular trials ever recorded in the annals of any civilized country . That it does not appear that William or Wilson Law or others then tried w ere permitted to appear or s ay anything . That n o j ury was r to called or sworn . nor were the witnesses requi ed give o their evidence on oath . The counselors sto d up one m after the other , and so e several times , and related what
h as ffi they pretended to know , and one di culty in deter mining whether the proceedings were more the result of o depravity or insanity . The trial resulted in the convi tion of the press as a public nuisance . The Mayor
( Smith ) was ordered to see it abated . Smith issued his warrant to the city marshal , who , aided by a portion of ‘ f the Legion , proceeded to the obnoxious printing o fice
