Northern Utah was in many ways a Crossroads long before the emigrants, settlers, railroad and military came here. As early as pre-Fremont Native Americans, we find evidence of trails and trade routes across this geographic area. The trappers and traders, both English and American, knew the area and crisscrossed it following many of the Native American trails. They also established new routes. Explorers sought additional routes to avoid natural barriers such as the mountains and the Great Salt Lake. As emigrants and settlers traveled west, knowledge of the area spread. The Crossroads designation was permanently established once the Railroad spanned the nation. -

Winslow History 490--Capstone Research Seminar December 6, 2010 Many have claimed that Mormonism is the American religion. But perhaps they have mistaken American geography for American culture. While early Mormonism took place in America, it can be interpreted as a reaction to American culture, and this is perhaps best seen in the Mormon doctrine of gathering. One Historian observed that gathering “was Mormonism‟s oldest and most influential doctrine.”1 Joseph Smith introduced that concept only months after he organized the church in a late December 1830 revelation that commanded Smith and his followers to “assemble together at the Ohio.”2 Mormon convert John Whitmer explained that the Mormons were “[slow] to be made to believe the commandments that came forth in these last days for the upbuilding of the kingdom of God.”3 In consequence, at a church conference held in Fayette, New York, on January 2, 1831, Joseph Smith presented another revelation concerning the gathering to Ohio. -

MicAael' J2umw Joseph Smith Ill's 1844 Blessing Ana The Mormons of Utah JVlembers of the Mormon Church headquartered in Salt Lake City may have reacted anywhere along the spectrum from sublime indifference to temporary discomfiture to cold terror at the recently discovered blessing by Joseph Smith, Jr., to young Joseph on 17 January 1844, to "be my successor to the Presidency of the High Priesthood: a Seer, and a Revelator, and a Prophet, unto the Church; which appointment belongeth to him by blessing, and also by right."1 The Mormon Church follows a line of succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., completely different from that provided in this document. To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period. -
Mormon Colonization of San Bernardino
http://www.covalt.org/mormon.HTM Mormon Colonization of San Bernardino First of all I like to thank The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' (referred to as "LDS" and "Mormon" in the rest of this paper) Historical Department. They opened their doors to me, allowing me to view records in their archives. They have an extensive collection of information relating to the Mormon settlement of San Bernardino. I had thought 5 days would be more than enough time to research what I wanted, but of course my research led to more questions and research data. Someday I'll head back for some more intensive researching there. I liberally took much out of the thesis by Joseph Wood ("The Mormon Settlement in San Bernardino 1851-1857"), the dissertation by Eugene Edward Campbell ("A History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints"), and a essay by Edward Leo Lyman ("The Rise and Decline of Mormon San Bernardino). These three works motivated me to expand my research further. If you are really into this subject, I suggest you purchase the book "San Bernardino. The Rise and Fall of a California Community" by Edward Leo Lyman (published 1996, Signature Books). I enjoyed the book immensely. You can order it online at Amazon books or Barnes and Noble. Loma Linda (Ca) 3rd Graders study about the history of their community (which includes this settlement). -

Bassett August 1966 PREFACE This field project had its beginning in an assignment given to the author in 1964. During the spring of that year he was commissioned by the seminary department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints1 to formulate a lesson plan for use in teaching a seminary course of study entitled "Church History and Doctrine." As will be shown later, the need for textual material dealing with the history of Mormonism2 from 1877 to the present arose during the writing of that lesson outline. -

O my Father! thou that dwelleth In the upper courts of light; Open thou the way before her— Guide, O guide her feet aright.1 Several major studies have been published examining Joseph Smith’s polygamous wives.2 My research supports that he was sealed to thirty-five plural spouses.3 This article examines briefly their later reactions to their plural involvement with the Prophet and addresses the following questions: What percentage kept the faith he taught? How many later left the Church and the Latter-day Saints? During the passing years, did any look back and consider his Nauvoo behavior improper or inappropriate? BRI A N C. HA LES ([email protected]) is an anesthesiologist at Davis Hospital in Layton, Utah, and president of the Utah Medical Association (2012–2013). He is the co-author of The Priesthood of Modern Polygamy, an LDS Perspective (1992); and author of Modern Polygamy (2008), and Mormon Fundamentalism: The Generations after the Manifesto (2006), which received the “Best Book Award” from the John Whitmer Historical As- sociation in 2007. His three volume Joseph Smith’s Polygamy: History and Theology will be published in early 2013.
