Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history. -

Abstract: Certificates of Land Title issued to Utah settlers, by the Probate Court of Salt Lake County, establishing legal title to their land under an Act of Congress entitled, “An Act for the relief of the Inhabitants of Cities and Towns upon the Public Lands, approved March 2, 1867.” Agency History The Probate Court was established with the creation of Utah as a territory in 1851. Federal law gave territorial probate courts the power to deal with matters of estates of deceased persons and the guardianship of the estates of minors and the incompetent. In 1852, the Territorial Legislature gave the Probate Court jurisdiction over civil, criminal, and chancery matters. The court could also act as an appellant court to the Justice of the Peace Courts within the county, and all Probate Court proceedings could be appealed to the District Court. Estate cases handled by the Court included probate and guardianship matters. These included adoptions after the legislature first made provisions for adoption as a legal process in 1884. Civil cases included primarily divorce, debt, replevin, damages, delinquent tax collections, contract and property disputes, and evictions. -

Kimball and Orson Hyde, mem- bers of the LDS Church and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, along with five other missionar- ies, arrived in Preston, England on July 22, 1837. One of the missionaries, Joseph Fielding, had a brother, Reverend James Fielding, who allowed the missionaries to preach to his congregation in the Vauxhall Chapel. It was the missionaries’ first pub- lic speaking opportunity in England. The early missionaries took up residence in rooms on Wilfrid Street. They held three success- ful meetings in Vauxhall Chapel. http://www.covalt.org/mormon.HTM Mormon Colonization of San Bernardino First of all I like to thank The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' (referred to as "LDS" and "Mormon" in the rest of this paper) Historical Department. They opened their doors to me, allowing me to view records in their archives. They have an extensive collection of information relating to the Mormon settlement of San Bernardino. I had thought 5 days would be more than enough time to research what I wanted, but of course my research led to more questions and research data. Someday I'll head back for some more intensive researching there. I liberally took much out of the thesis by Joseph Wood ("The Mormon Settlement in San Bernardino 1851-1857"), the dissertation by Eugene Edward Campbell ("A History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints"), and a essay by Edward Leo Lyman ("The Rise and Decline of Mormon San Bernardino). These three works motivated me to expand my research further. If you are really into this subject, I suggest you purchase the book "San Bernardino. The Rise and Fall of a California Community" by Edward Leo Lyman (published 1996, Signature Books). I enjoyed the book immensely. You can order it online at Amazon books or Barnes and Noble. Baugh The Elders’ Journal of July 1838, published in Far West, Missouri, includ- ed a series of twenty questions related to Mormonism. The answers to the questions bear the editorial pen of Joseph Smith. Question number sixteen posed the following query: “If the Mormon doctrine is true, what has become of all those who have died since the days of the apostles?” The Prophet answered, “All those who have not had an opportunity of hearing the gospel, and being administered to by an inspired man in the flesh, must have it hereafter before they can be finally judged.”1 The Prophet’s thought is clear—the dead must have someone in mortality administer the saving ordinances for them to be saved in the kingdom of God. Significantly, the answer given by the Prophet marks his first known statement concerning the doctrine of vicari- ous work for the dead. However, it was not until more than two years later that the principle was put into practice.2 On 15 August 1840, Joseph Smith preached the funeral sermon of Seymour Brunson during which time he declared for the first time the doc- trine of baptism for the dead.3 Unfortunately, there are no contemporary accounts of the Prophet’s discourse. However, Simon Baker was present at the funeral services and later stated that during the meeting the Prophet read extensively from 1 Corinthians 15, then noted a particular widow in the congregation whose son had died without baptism. -

Signatures on file in the Graduate School. iii Abstract Recent studies have reconsidered the Mormon Culture Region in light of its 1880{1920 transition to American political and economic norms. While these studies emphasize conflicts between the Mormon establishment and the non-Mormon federal government, Mormon/non-Mormon relations within Utah have received little direct attention. Based on religious affiliations recorded in the 1880 federal census of Utah Territory, this study uses historical GIS to visualize the composition of Utah's \Mormon" and \non-Mormon" towns. The results highlight the extensive presence of religious minorities in Utah's settlements. Case studies of farm villages, mining camps, and urban neighborhoods probe the social and economic contexts of non-Mormon presence in Utah. These studies, based on Sanborn maps and city directories, explore the geographical mosaic of Mormon and non-Mormon residence and business activity. These variegated patterns, often absent from historical accounts of the region, enable localized analyses of the ensuing decades of cultural conflict, transformation and assimilation. Carol Wilkinson: Baptismal Site in Chatburn, England 83 Mormon Baptismal Site in Chatburn, England Carol Wilkinson The location of a baptismal site in the village of Chatburn, England, used by Mormon missionaries in the 1830s and 1840s has been identified. This village, along with the neighboring community of Downham, was the location of a large number of Mormon conversions when the message of the restored gospel was first preached to the inhabitants during this time period. The first Mormon missionaries to England arrived in Liverpool in July 1837. These seven men (Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, Willard Richards, Joseph Fielding, Isaac Russell, John Goodson, and John Snyder), quickly moved to Preston where they were successful in receiving converts and orga- nized a branch of the Church in that city. After organizing the Preston Branch they decided to separate and carry their message to other parts of the surround- ing country. Heber C. Kimball, Orson Hyde, and Joseph Fielding stayed in the Preston area and continued to proselytize and organize branches. Kimball and Fielding also began to venture into the upper reaches of the river Ribble Val- ley, teaching in Walkerford and Ribchester, where they experienced further success and organized additional branches of the Church.1 Further upstream from these villages lay the small communities of Chat- burn and Downham, just south of the river Ribble and north of towering Pen- dle Hill. Some of the most spiritual experiences of the missionary effort in the upper Ribble Valley occurred in these two villages.
