Somani1 and Marissa J. Doshi2 Abstract This study examined the portrayal of women on Indian soap operas through content analysis. Quotes from in-depth interviews of 100 Asian Indians (50 couples) from five major metropolitan areas, NY, DC, SF, Chicago, and Houston, who watch Indian television (imported from India) via the satellite dish or cable, were used in this study. Researchers uncovered specific themes, such as Portrayal of women, Heterosexual Romance and Intimacy, and Joint Family, and analyzed these themes against the theoretical framework of cultural proximity. The authors explained that the role of Indian women being created in Indian serials did not reflect the image of Indian women the participants remembered when they migrated to the United States in the 1960s. The image of Indian women that was being portrayed was that of a “vamp” or someone manipulative and not family-oriented. Therefore, the cultural proximity of the Indian soap operas was disrupted by the negative portrayal of Indian women to a particular generation of Indian immigrants in the United States. The participants appreciated the image of a modern Indian woman, as long as she still maintained traditional values. Further, these portrayals reminded these participants that they were cultural outsiders in modern India. Accepted 9 March, 2010 Marriage information is an integral part of the knowledge base in any civilized society. In India, several non-government agencies as well as de-institutionalized sources provide a great variety of marriage related information in different domains of the society. Despite various modes in transferring matrimonial information, increasing use of social networks offers new opportunities for newer matrimony services. The purpose of this paper is to present the state-of-the-art of popular matrimony service portals emerged in India for providing SDI (selective dissemination of information) based personalized services to multifarious groups of the nation. Addresses of selective portals provide glimpses of current Indian activities on matrimonial information systems and services. It also examines the potentialities of the four biggest matrimonial players (viz. shaadi, bharatmatrimony, jeevansathi and simplymarry) in the country consistent with the present and anticipated needs of the marriage- information-seekers. Comparison has been carried out based on the web metrics. The paper noticed that online matrimony services would have ever-increasing importance in satisfying the objectivity of social networking practices. CHAPTER III PEOPLE POPULATION The population of the district, as per Census 2011, was 12,05,437 (6,46,857 males and 5,58,580 females), while in the 2001 Census, its population was 9,67,449. In the decade (2001-2011) there was an increase of 2,37,988 persons. The district occupies 10th rank among the 21 districts of the State in respect of the population according to Census 2011. It provides an opportunity to experience awe and wonder as pupils reflect on attitudes to life, living things and the world. Through this unit pupils are introduced to the belief that whilst some people believe the world was a wonderful accident, people of many faiths, and specifically Jews, Christians and Muslims, believe a Creator God, designed the world. Content includes Jewish and Christian beliefs about God as a Creator, responsibility for living things on the planet as a response to this belief, harvest thanksgivings and St Francis as an example of living a life in response to these beliefs. Islamic beliefs about Allah, the Creator of all things and people as the custodians of the earth. Where the unit fits and how it The unit should be taught at the start of term 1 in Year 1. It introduces pupils to beliefs in Judaism, Christianity builds upon previous learning and Islam, incorporating content from the appropriate sections of the syllabus. Throughout the unit pupils should be encouraged to notice change in the world around them – in the weather, in plant life around the school, in themselves and in seeds/bulbs that can be grown in class. -
