With the growing economy, increased educational levels, the gradual rise in ‘love match marriages’ and knowing that marriage is usually a onetime opportunity, young Indian couples are willing to adopt and reject certain elements of the traditional Vedic wedding rituals to fit into the larger scheme of their life’s meaning and establish their own style. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 married Indian Hindu women currently living in the United States to identify and examine the social factors that influenced the choices that these women made regarding the various Vedic wedding rituals. Ann Swidler’s (2004) “tool-kit” approach provides a theoretical framework for better understanding of how culture works, i.e., the complex ways in which people use their diverse culture as repertoires to describe the meaning of another culture that shapes the individual’s day-to-day lives. The interviewed women identified the social factors as the influence of modernization and westernization in India; the role of family and community; and the role of education which affected their choices. These three major social factors played a significant role in their decisions and conceptualizing their choices in the ritual selection process as well as providing a means to better understand the changing aspects of the Indian society. Abstract: Western feminism created a revolution on the international stage urging the world to look at things through the perspective of women who were historically suppressed because of their gender, yet in many instances, it failed to address the issue of women in the Indian subcontinent because of the existence of social hierarchies that are alien concepts to the western world. As a result, the impact of western feminist thinkers was limited to only the elites in the Indian subcontinent. The idea of social hierarchy is infamously unique to the South Asian context and hence, in the view of the authors, this evil has to be fought through homegrown approaches which have to address these double disadvantages that women suffer in this part of the world. While many have tried to characterize Ambedkar’s political and social philosophy into one of the ideological labels, his philosophy was essentially ‘a persistent attempt to think things through’. It becomes important here to understand what made Ambedkar different from others; what was his social condition and his status in a hierarchal Hindu Society. As a matter of his epistemology, his research and contribution did not merely stem from any particular compartmentalized consideration of politics or society, rather it encompassed the contemporary socio-political reality taking into consideration other intersectionalities like gender and caste.

I will try here to understand something to it! The Indian wedding for Dummies - 1. The arranged marriage Arranged marriage: and why not?! Let's make the distinction between arranged marriage and forced marriage. If I can de-dramatize arranged marriages (read below), it is impossible to do the same with forced marriages which are still widely practiced in India: 40% of women do not have a word in the choice of the husband, less than 20% of women (over 25) knew their husbands before the fateful day and worse, almost 50% of women have married before the legal age of 18 (source http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/many-women-have-no-say-in- marriage/article5801893.ece ). Which means that there are still thousands of people (Hindus) who, each year, follow the tradition and find out whom they are going spend the rest of their lives with only when they are already married: SURPRISE! As per the custom to groom arrives first, and his view is hidden with a bed sheet, which is removed once the bride is brought in by her maternal uncle and cousins and the consent of the parents exchanged. The bed sheet is simply a less sexy version (but more promising ;)) of the veil used in Catholic marriages, originally to hide the face of the bride (source http://www.le- mariage.com/traditions/ )).

Borrowing from Donna Haraway’s notion of situated knowledge, Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism, and W.E.B. Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness, this article presents the idea of immigrant consciousness and precedes to contend with the sociocultural circumstances, such as transnational migration, assimilation, and racism-classism, that have prompted the evolution of a modern iteration of arranged marriage. The central question that informs this paper is what does arranged marriage mean – and how can it be defended and/or criticized – in different circumstances and from different standpoints in the transnational South Asian context? INTRODUCTION Dating is foreign to me. Is that strange to hear? Let me qualify that statement: American dating is foreign to me. I am a first-generation Indian-American, Christian girl. I am the child of parents who immigrated from India to the United States and who were brought together through an arranged marriage. The practice of arranged marriage runs through most of my family history and dating is a relatively new practice to us collectively. Important to note, however, is that my family members’ individual histories, like all histories, do not run on one generalized path. I have family members who never married, who remarried, who had forced marriages, who had “love marriages,” who married young, who married non- Indian people, who divorced, and so on and so forth.

    8th February 2021 Position Paper on Forced Marriage Analysis of Arranged Marriage as Practiced in Jewish Communities Forward The shidduch system of arranged marriage as practised in the Charedi (also known as Ultra-Orthodox) part of the Jewish community has worked for many people in a range of Charedi communities. It has brought joy, satisfaction and belonging to many Jewish couples and enriched their lives. This paper is written for people using the shidduch system of arranged marriage. This paper is also written for the Jewish community, including Jewish community organisations, and as well as those working in the wider VAWG sector. We seek to explain our concerns with some aspects of the shidduch system, and to demonstrate that elements of the shidduch system can create social pressure and coercion to marry, inhibiting a person’s capacity to consent to a marriage. We call on various agencies of the UK Government and other organisations to implement our recommendations. We explore how social pressures can fit with the term “Forced Marriage” as defined in UK legislation. We write as observant Jews, and we have undertaken this work to reduce the harms inflicted on individuals in our community. We are confident that our community has the confidence to consider our recommendations with nuanced reflection. Somani1 and Marissa J. Doshi2 Abstract This study examined the portrayal of women on Indian soap operas through content analysis. Quotes from in-depth interviews of 100 Asian Indians (50 couples) from five major metropolitan areas, NY, DC, SF, Chicago, and Houston, who watch Indian television (imported from India) via the satellite dish or cable, were used in this study. Researchers uncovered specific themes, such as Portrayal of women, Heterosexual Romance and Intimacy, and Joint Family, and analyzed these themes against the theoretical framework of cultural proximity. The authors explained that the role of Indian women being created in Indian serials did not reflect the image of Indian women the participants remembered when they migrated to the United States in the 1960s. The image of Indian women that was being portrayed was that of a “vamp” or someone manipulative and not family-oriented. Therefore, the cultural proximity of the Indian soap operas was disrupted by the negative portrayal of Indian women to a particular generation of Indian immigrants in the United States. The participants appreciated the image of a modern Indian woman, as long as she still maintained traditional values. Further, these portrayals reminded these participants that they were cultural outsiders in modern India.
