    https://doi.org/10.22409/gragoata.v24i49.34156 Intersecção entre os Estudos Ibéricos e os Estudos de Tradução: o exemplo da tradução da literatura catalã em Portugal Esther Gimeno Ugaldea Resumo Tomando como ponto de partida a intersecção entre os Estudos Ibéricos e os Estudos de Tradução, este artigo aborda as relações entre os sistemas literários catalão e português com base no trabalho de tradução, nomeadamente da tradução de romances escritos em catalão para português europeu no século XXI. O propósito da análise é duplo: por um lado, e partindo da tradução literária, quer-se salientar a natureza rizomática do espaço ibérico, tal como propõe o paradigma dos Estudos Ibéricos e, por outro, pretende-se mostrar o potencial da intersecção de duas disciplinas que se encontram em expansão. Apresenta-se primeiro uma breve descrição e análise do corpus estudado para depois se centrar no papel intermediário do espanhol. A ênfase posta na tradução indireta permite concluir que este processo de transferência cultural acaba por ter efeitos negativos, uma vez que pode implicar a invisibilização da língua e do sistema cultural menorizado.     Magdalena Coll Carbonell Mirada al espacio interior en Temps d’una espera de Carme Riera Examining Interior Space in Carme Riera’s Temps d’una espera Magdalena Coll Carbonell World Languages Department Edgewood College, Madison, WI Recibido el 20 de marzo de 2010 Aprobado el 25 de agosto de 2010 Resumen: Carme Riera, en Temps d'una espera, elabora un diálogo con el feto que ya ocupa un espacio en su cuerpo. La narración es una creación dual, simultáneamente se crean los dos, el nuevo ser y el texto. Este trabajo reflexiona sobre el espacio corporal perteneciente exclusivamente a la mujer y el espacio textual. El útero es textualizado y contextualizado en Temps d'una espera en forma de diario epistolar, en relación al tiempo de ocupación limitado. Reivindicar la maternidad como espacio creativo y vía de liberación para la mujer, este es el objetivo de este análisis. Palabras clave: Maternidad y texto. Creatividad. Espacio. Identidad femenina. Summary: In “Temps d’una espera” Carme Riera composes a dialogue with the fetus that inhabits a space within her body. The narrative describes a dual creation, that of the new being, and of the text itself. This work reflects upon both textual space and the space within their bodies that is the exclusive property of women. In Temps d’una espera the uterus is textualized and contextualized in the form of an epistolary diary, in relation to the limited term of fetal occupation. Riera’s reinvocation of motherhood as a creative space and the road to liberation for women is the objective of this analysis.

Candidates will also need to demonstrate a solid competence in the application of literary and cultural theories of interpretation listed after Section I. C. Required Theoretical Works. General Reference Books recommended for both Spanish and Spanish American Literature are listed at the end of their sections and placed on permanent reserve at William T. Young Library. The following list of readings constitutes approximately half of the M.A. exam. You will be held responsible for the works on this list even if these texts are not covered in your courses.     Currículum vitae de Carme Riera María del Carmen Riera Guilera (Barcelona, 1948) es licenciada en Filosofía y Letras, sección de Filología Románica, subsección de Hispánicas, por la Universidad de Barcelona y doctora en Filología con Premio Extraordinario por la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. Desde 1995 es catedrática de Literatura Española de la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona y directora de la Cátedra José Agustín Goytisolo de la misma universidad desde el 2002, dedicación que compagina con su faceta de escritora iniciada en 1975. Ha sido catedrática de Lengua y Literatura Españolas de Institutos Nacionales de Enseñanza Media y titular de Universidad; profesora visitante en las universidades de Florida (Gainesville) (1987), Darmouth College (2001) y en la University of Chicago (2006).     Can Canonicity Be Translated?: Víctor Català, Mercè Rodoreda, and Carme Riera in Translation, Research, and Graduate Studies Kate Good Grinnell College Within departments of language and literature, there exists an ongoing debate on which texts should form the basis of contemporary graduate studies. Instructors strive to teach works of timeless quality that showcase an array of social, cultural, geographical, and political realities. Scholars like Wadda C. Ríos-Font, Joan L. Brown, Crista Johnson, and Stuart Davis have demonstrated that this task remains a complicated one; establishing a shared institutional conception of The Canon has proven a perennially problematic pursuit. Graduate reading lists in Hispanic Studies provide one salient manifestation of the changing dynamics of this canon and, as such, have been subject to a host of critical assessments. Davis asserts that these lists present “idiosyncratic approaches” (132); Brown calls them “chaotic” (“Why Spanish” XIV). Yet part of the ostensible chaos stems from a turn towards increasingly pluralistic and intersectional conceptions of culture. For instance, the inclusion of literary realities beyond those presented by the predominantly Castilian—and male—old guard serves to better reflect the diverse populations of the Spanish state. Prose by writers from non-majority linguistic backgrounds, such as the Catalan Mercè Rodoreda’s Plaça del diamant (1962) or the Basque Bernardo Atxaga’s Obabakoak (1988), appears on an ever-growing number of graduate 76 MIFLC Review Volume 18 reading lists.1 Even when not included by perfect consensus, these welcome additions go far to mend traditions of literary nearsightedness. When originally published in a language other than Spanish, these works raise new questions about the impact of translations on reading and research in the field of Hispanic Studies.

As romance languages such as Spanish and French exhibit grammatical gender in ways that English does not, texts written in these languages are able to play on the interaction between the gender of the words themselves and the themes of social gender in a way that an English-language text ostensibly cannot. This project explores the effect of the linguistic category of grammatical gender on the themes of social gender through the process of translation, with special attention paid to the ways in which this interaction can present obstacles in the transfer and adaptation of the text across languages.
