The Web user is welcomed onto the My Tribe Is My Life site by an avatar. Randomly generated, the virtual character sports a particular musical style (say, Goth) and addresses the user directly: “Could this avatar be you?” If the answer is yes, the user keeps that avatar. If the answer is no, an anonymous avatar is offered, which can be personalized later. The user then discovers nine silhouettes: those of the eight characters from My Tribe Is My Life (see below) and one of their own avatar. eight chArActers The Web user can access the eight leading characters: Patrick, Heythem, Jimmy, Janis, Laurianne, Sébastien, Pierre-Luc and Shana. Each character grants access to his or her documentary portrait. During the viewing, users respond to a series of questions about how the Internet fits into their life. They can also comment on the portrait they are looking at, and access the interactions of any other user. AvAtArs Web users can personalize and style their avatar, choosing clothing and accessories that correspond to their own favourite musical identity. They can also upload a photograph of their own face, add it to their avatar, and bring up tattoos or specific marks on their arms. To build depth into their avatar, users must answer numerous questions on the impact of social media in their daily lives. They may look at other visitors’ answers, as well as at statistics compiled for all responses. Users can share the experience by inviting their friends to create an avatar or by creating one for them and e-mailing it to them. supplementAry informAtion The site includes additional content about the My Tribe Is My Life project and the phenomenon surrounding it. • “Protagonists” gives users access to the personal files of each of the eight young people being followed in the Web documentary, their biographies, and links to other social networking sites (blogs, forums, etc.). • “The Process” provides information on the genesis of the project and the approach its creators have adopted. • “The Phenomenon” offers an analysis of the role of music, the Internet, and social networking throughout history, asking how the latter fits into society and influences modes of communication. • “Related NFB Films” is a list of National Film Board of Canada productions with a connection to the project. Interactive platforms can encourage for example more participative, kinaesthetic, playful and social interaction. However, interactive documentaries have in some degree failed to find and engage their users. Consequently, understanding the variety of users’ experiences with interactive documentaries has become increasingly important. The purpose of this thesis is to provide understanding of the variety of user engagement and immersion in interactive documentaries through a case study of NFB’s web-based interactive documentary Bear 71. Since interactive documentaries and games share increasingly similar characteristics, a game immersion studies framework, Calleja’s Player Involvement Model, is applied in the study. Immersion and the means to engage with documentary artefact are closely related to textual interpretation and meaning- making. Thus, the study combines methodologies from interactive documentary reception studies and game immersion studies to create methodological triangulation suitable for understanding different aspects of immersive interactive documentary experience. Un étrange no man's land qui abrite pourtant l'un des fleurons de la création documentaire (interactive). Pour se repérer dans ce dédale de couloirs aux allures d'hôpital ( « Il y a de toutes façons beaucoup de fous ici » , ironise Hugues Sweeney, producteur exécutif au studio interactif), un seul guide s'impose : Marie-Claude Lamoureux, qui est bien plus que la "relationniste médias" que présente sa carte de visite. Marie-Claude est une boule d'énergie à l'enthousiasme communicatif. Une québécoise alerte au verbe haut perché qui a l'audace du vinaigre sur les frites. Une boussole pour le visiteur, franche et sincère , avec qui il est très plaisant de refaire le monde (de la création) autour d'un café.

The desire to make Canadian art by local artists accessible to Canadians and visitors. Aéroports de Montréal (ADM) and the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) have joined forces to show NFB photographs, films and animated works at Montréal-Trudeau Airport under the Montréal Identity program, better known as L’Aérogalerie. Over the next year or so, three locations at the terminal will be the venue for selected works specially adapted for the occasion. The NFB’s French Program is also considering producing original works for Aéroports de Montréal. “Once again, the NFB is finding innovative ways to make its works accessible to as many people as possible. With this new partnership, the NFB and ADM are offering some 13 million visitors to the air terminal a unique cultural experience and a novel way of viewing Montreal and the work of great Canadian creators, whether expressed through conventional film techniques, animation or multimedia,” said Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and Chairperson of the National Film Board of Canada. “The exhibition is part of the Montréal Identity program, also known as L’Aérogalerie, an initiative that we implemented in 2005 with the aim of infusing the airport facilities with a typically ‘Montreal’ character, as well as helping support the city’s artistic and cultural development.
