JULY MEETING Tuesday, July 3 Happy Hour 6:30pm; Meeting 7pm Classic Café Event Center 4832 Hillegas Road

July Program : Kathy Doran and the “Bees”

Donna’s Threads of Color

I’ve been looking forward to writing my first article as President for the guild newsletter. I had a lot of thoughts I wanted to share, but fate stepped in and changed my plans. That article will have to wait for a later date. I have always known my friends were more than friends – they are more like sisters. My accident brought that home more than anything else ever could. So many of my quilting “sisters” came forward and helped me in more ways than you can imagine. The I planned to enter in our show will now be there because one “sister” completed the binding and sleeves on two of them. Another “sister” picked them up from my house and will deliver them to the coliseum. One is taking care of my garden while several others have brought flowers from their gardens. I have received cookies to share with the staff; a very special lap to keep me warm; along with many phone calls, visits, cards, and prayers which brightened every day. I send a special THANK YOU to Linda Mulpagano for taking over my duties and doing them so well. I have heard from many “sisters” that everything is going smoothly for the quilt show and we have met our goal of 300 quilts for display.

I am on the mend and feeling better every day. God willing, I may see you at the quilt show.

PROPOSED BYLAW

At the June meeting, membership will have the opportunity to vote on a new bylaw relating to Guild funds. It was recommended that a bylaw, Article 12, Guild Expenditures, should be added. It states that “any commitment of Guild funds of $1,000 or more must be submitted in proposal form for approval by the board.” Then, if the proposal is for a Quilt Show, it must also be approved by the general membership.

SUNSHINE AND SHADOWS

Donna Sievers is feeling good and plans to be home on June 22nd. She expects to conduct the July meeting and resume many, if not all of her duties. Her recovery is amazing and shows a great spirit.

Liz Nickel had her second successful cataract surgery and is recoving well. She is glad to have that behind her.

If you have information for Sunshine and Shadows please report it to Ginny Hoot or Gloria Hoevel .

JULY EVENTS

July 9th 6:30pm at Georgetown Branch Library AQG Board meeting

PROGRAM NOTES

We should all take the time to listen to each other and realize that not every member knows everyone. It is never wrong to go up and introduce yourself to someone new or someone that you don't know. We are a family of quilters and although we recognize that each of us is individual-our goal is to join together as a family-welcoming all who want to join Appleseed. In keeping with this idea- there will be a list at the membership table for those ladies who want to join the "Buddy List." This list will be comprised of all those who will join with a new member-or prospective member- and answer questions re: Appleseed or quilting concerns. In this way- we hope to create a welcoming atmosphere for all in attendance.

Programs Chairperson- Linda Mulpagano

MONTHLY MINI

The June mini, a table runner of reds, creams, and blues, donated by Jennifer Steward was taken home by Pat Maggart. Eunice Scully has created two stunning minis for July. The larger one, entitled "Linear Experiment", is made in lovely Autumn colors. It includes outline quilting around the leaves and stems and hand stitching in the borders. The smaller one, called "A Quilter Lives Here", is a cheery portrait of a "quilter's" house accented with flowers and a tree.

Our THANKS goes to all the ladies who have provided such wonderful items for the first half of 2012. Future Minis will be donated by Deb Stachowiecz (August); Pam Etheridge (September); Kathy Doran (October); Susan Buschur and Chris Lowe (November); and Debi Barham (December). Please consider making a Monthly Mini. There will be a sign-up sheet on our table for all of 2013.

President’s Quilt

I wish to thank the Guild for the gift of my beautiful President’s Quilt. And, I especially want to thank those of you who worked on the quilt.

My quilt will be displayed in the Quilt Show with the ‘Group’ quilts so be sure that you stop by and take a good look at it. I especially want to thank Mary Ann Skinner for the pattern selection and overall appearance of the quilt. The excellent piecing was done by Mary Ann Skinner, Michele Williams, Kathy Doran, Karen Wolfgram, Cindy Houser, Sharon Edwards, Donna Sievers, Teresa Wade, and Cindy Loos. Cindi Fletcher did an outstanding job of long arm quilting (be sure that you look closely at the detail). And, Teresa Wade finished it off with a beautiful label.

I love it! It will hang in a prominent place during the Christmas Holidays.

Thank you all, Janet Ditton

TIPS and TECHNIQES

Binding Tip : As quilting has evolved, so have some of the techniques that we learned. Binding is an area that has changed dramatically since I started quilting, and for the better. One area that's changed is the way we sew the binding at the corners. The positioning and flipping all stays the same. The miter will look a lot crisper and stay in place with the new method. When attaching the binding to the quilt, start like you normally would. Approaching the corner, instead of stopping and locking your stitches just before the edge of your fabric(the distance is the width of the binding), you stop at that distance with needle down, rotate the quilt so your needle will be heading into that corner and stitch through the corner at a 45 degree angle. Now lock your stitches and cut your thread. That makes and holds the front miter for you. Now you are ready to flip and position the binding to continue the next side like you normally would. Of course, repeat this at each corner.
