I t’s hard to believe that summer is whizzing by so quickly. It seems like it was a rainy, cold spring and then Wham! It’s August.

I trust you have been keeping busy with family and vacations. I certainly have. But I have been quilting as well. I have two wedding quilts in the works that have kept me sewing. I am also finishing up my donation for the October Auc- tion and Tea. It should be a fun affair. Time is running out, and I do better with a deadline!

I had the chance to show our Opportunity , “Wilderness Creatures,” during the June Quilter’s Run, and the comments were gratifying. Everyone remarked on what a spectacular quilt the guild members had made. The quilt sells itself, as they say. One of the remarkable things about the quilt is every time you look at it you notice something new. My favorite thing is the grasshopper! The quilt really draws you in and keeps you looking around. There was another opportu- nity quilt at one of the shops, and as I was preparing to go home, the other quilt person remarked, “Whew, there goes our competition.” I had to chuckle.

My year as president is half over and I don’t know where the time has gone. Soon it will be the Auction and Tea, then Christmas and, just like that..... Janu- ary. I am making the most of my remaining time.

Have a good rest of the summer. See you August 10th! Bonnie Lippincott

Opportunity Quilt 2013 (2012-13)

W e need members to volunteer to form a committee to be in charge of making the Opportunity Quilt for 2012-13. They need to pick a pattern and get approval from the pattern maker. And submit it to the board. Let the President know if you are interested in working on this project. Page 3 ORANGE GROVE QUILTERS GUILD

Our AWESOME hospitality team, led by Pat Essington, always comes up with the perfect settings for our refreshment table!

October 8th Auction & Tea

T he Auction and Tea is fast approaching. Have you gotten your Pre-Sale Ticket yet? They are $5 and Ellen Roman will be selling them at the August and September meet- ings. The regular at-the-door price is $7 and we can all use an extra $2 to buy Opportu- nity Basket tickets.

We are also selling raffle tickets at these meetings for a 19-inch Toshiba LED HDTV/ DVD Combo. Buy some tickets for yourself. If you want to take some tickets for your family, friends and neighbors, please take some to sell. You can bring the money and stubs to the next meeting or at the Auction and Tea.

We still have bookmarks available if you still want to take some around. Linda Majer will be accepting your quilt donations and entry forms at the meeting. Don’t forget that we need a photo of your donation along with entry form. If you need help with the photo you can bring it to a meeting and we will make sure a photo gets taken.

DISPATCHER Page 4 WORKSHOP BONANZA!!!

J une’s coloring workshop with Patricia Beaver was “a blast from the past”! Crayons at the ready, we broke the “crayon rules” -- peeled the paper (oh my!) and, (Gasp! Be still my heart!) we were encouraged to BREAK the crayons (don’t tell the grandkids)! We were in coloring heaven. So many neat ideas. Can’t wait to see some of the finished pro- jects. Now that our July “vacation” is over, we need to gear up for the rest of the year. Just a reminder of future workshops: September-Karen Stone, Cactus Flower; October- Lisa Coulombe, Curvy Bias Technique; November-Sue Rasmussen, Machine Pieced Landscape; December-No Workshop. Stop by the workshop table and see photos of the projects. Most workshops have spaces to fill. If the work- shop is full, please put your name on the wait list as life happens and openings appear. Supply lists and direc- tions to the workshops are sent to enrolled participants approximately 2-3 months before the class so you have plenty of time to gather your supplies. Workshops are held at Westminster Village Club House, 5200 Black- pool. There is ample parking and the venue is well lighted and spacious. Bring your lunch and snacks. A re- frigerator and microwave are available. Any questions? See us at the Workshop Table or contact us at: Marie Blash: 714-775-8004; [email protected] ; Justine Gentile: 714-962-8447; [email protected]. Hope to see you at a workshop soon! In the News .... PASSING DOWN THE PASSION

O GQG's own Nancy Henry has inspired students and teachers alike in her career as a teacher. "She began teaching in Ohio at age 20 before spending 36 years in the Long Beach Unified School District, advancing from teacher to principal. Along the way she earned her M.A. in education administration from Cal State Long Beach in 1978. Although she retired 14 years ago, her presence continues to be felt by CSULB students, thanks to her support and involvement in several scholarship programs and her own endowed scholarship to benefit student teachers. "Being involved with the scholarship programs keeps you active and alive with what's going on with students," she said. Nancy's advice to today's teachers is to "get out there and inspire those kids to want to learn, get them interested in learning and make the curriculum exciting. If it's not memorable or inspiring, they will not ever do anything with their lives." What better way to make a difference in our world than to inspire children to become the leaders of tomorrow. Well done, Nancy! DISPATCHER Page 6
