Through designing and implementing the concept of “aesthetic life narratives” in a primary school classroom, my research produces a curricular example of how therapeutic notions such as those found in psychological thought can be integrated into contemporary Scottish education through narrative and aesthetic means, exemplifying how individual children can make sense of expressive processes and roles introduced to them in an educational context. The specific characteristics of the research space and the particular interactive quality of research participation also illustrate how different children are able to participate in a short-term emotional education intervention specifically designed to be empowering. At the same time, my experience shows that the complex dynamic between the subjective life of a researcher and the historical nature of a child’s experience with caregivers in their home life can shape educational/research experience, as well as its adult and child participants, in ways unanticipated. What transpired in the process of applying philosophical ideas to the real lives of children in my research produced ethical implications regarding critical reflexivity and the socio-cultural regard of the child that are of wider relevance to educators, researchers, counsellors and policy makers who interact with children in their own work. 4 Table of Contents Title Page Abstract 2 Table of Historic Environment Scotland – Scottish Charity No. SC045925 Principal Office: Longmore House, Salisbury Place, Edinburgh EH9 1SH EDINBURGH CASTLE – GATEHOUSE, INNER BARRIER AND OLD GUARDHOUSE BRIEF DESCRIPTION The present Gatehouse, built in 1886–88, is the latest in a series of main entrances into the castle. Replacing a far simpler gate, the Victorian structure was seen as a bold intervention at the time. It is surrounded by a number of lesser constructions; the oldest, including the Inner Barrier, date from the later 17th century, and the latest, the ticket office, was constructed as recently as 2008. Archaeological investigations in the area in 1989, in advance of creating the vehicle tunnel through the castle rock, uncovered evidence for two massive Iron Age ditches in the area. CHARACTER OF THE MONUMENT Historical Overview Late 1st millennium BC: Two massive ditches are dug on the east side of the castle rock, presumably as part of a scheme to upgrade the defences of the prehistoric fort. The ditches are still serving a defensive function into the 14th century. 1649/50: The ‘forte of the castell hill’, or Spur, built in 1548 on the site of the present Esplanade, is dismantled and removed.

    A R Sturrock 1885 -1953 Introduction Alexander Riddell Sturrock, always known as Alick was born at 26 Craigmillar Park in the Newington district of Edinburgh on 10 June 1885. Although he lived for much of his life in the city, Alick’s roots were deep in the Borders countryside. His mother’s family, the Riddells, had farmed at the Rink, a substantial farm by the Tweed between Selkirk and Galashiels since before 1850 and before that in the vicinity of the hamlet of Riddell. His father Alexander, who had come to Edinburgh to follow a career with the British Linen Bank, was the son of the Minister of the Original Secession Church at Midlem, near Selkirk. Alick was the youngest of four children of Katherine and Alexander Sturrock and attended George Watson’s College, leaving school in 1902 at the age of 17 to take an apprenticeship with a firm of lithographers. However, he soon began to take night classes at the old School of Art at the Mound. Later he attended the Royal Scottish Academy Life Class, where fellow students included the Dumfries born painter, Eric Robertson, A B Thomson and D M Sutherland, before enrolling at the new Edinburgh College of Art1. It was at this time too, that he would have got to know Cecile Walton and Dorothy Johnstone and would have first met Mary Newbery. In 1909 Alick had his first work accepted for exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy, The Valley of the Ettrick, a work, which recalls his Border roots and set his course as a painter of lowland landscapes.

Formed from the shell of the 1755 North Barracks, regarded as symbolic in itself, the Memorial comprises two principal elements – the Hall of the Regiments (now known as the Hall of Honour), in which the enormous contribution made by Scotland’s twelve regiments and the other corps and services are recorded; and beyond it the Shrine, wherein lies the steel casket containing the complete Roll of Honour of the Scottish dead from the Great War. The Scottish National War Memorial was designed by Robert S Lorimer, among the foremost architects of his day, and created by an outstanding team of some 200 artists, craftsmen and labourers. Lorimer enriched the exterior of the building with variations on ancient Scottish architectural detail, and encrusted it with sculpture idealising the ‘just war’, culminating above the front door with a figure rising from a phoenix, symbolising the survival of the spirit.

Introduction 1. Introduction Memorials of many types have been erected at various times in the past to commemorate battles and to remember the fallen from conflicts. However, war memorials became much more common following the First World War. The scale of the losses suffered in the War and the many soldiers whose fate remained unknown or uncertain left those at home with a sense of shared grief. There was hardly a parish or community in Britain where a husband, son or father had not been lost and the war memorials erected in their honour are a focal point in towns and villages throughout the country.
