Your Enrollment As a Voter
YOUR ENROLLMENT AS A VOTER When you register to vote, you may choose to enroll in a political party or political designation or may choose to remain “unenrolled,” which is commonly referred to as independent. Choosing to Enroll in a Political Party: There are two political parties in Massachusetts: Democratic Party (D), (617) 776-2676 Republican Party (R), (617) 523-5005 If you enroll in either of these two parties you may vote only in that party’s primary. Enrollment in a political party does not affect your right to vote in the general election. In the general election, all voters receive the same ballot and vote for the candidate of their choice, regardless of party enrollment. Choosing No Enrollment in a Political Party: If you do not wish to enroll in a party, check the box next to “No Party (unenrolled)” on the voter registration form. If you do not enroll in a party, you may still vote in state and presidential primaries by choosing a party ballot and will remain unenrolled, which is commonly referred to as “independent.” Choosing to Enroll in a Political Designation: In addition to the two “political parties” listed above, there are certain legal political designations in which you can enroll. Submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters Inquiry Into the Conduct of the 2013 Federal Election
11 April 2014 Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters Parliament House Canberra ACT Please find attached my submission to the Committee's inquiry into the conduct of the 2013 federal election. In my submission I make suggestions for changes to political party registration under the Commonwealth Electoral Act. I also suggest major changes to Senate's electoral system given the evident problems at lasty year's election as well as this year's re-run of the Western Australian Senate election. I also make modest suggestions for changes to formality rules for House of Representatives elections. I have attached a substantial appendix outlining past research on NSW Legislative Council Elections. This includes ballot paper surveys from 1999 and research on exhaustion rates under the new above the line optional preferential voting system used since 2003. I can provide the committee with further research on the NSW Legislative Council system, as well as some ballot paper research I have been carrying out on the 2013 Senate election. I am happy to discuss my submission with the Committee at a hearing. House of Representatives By-Elections 1901–2014
RESEARCH PAPER SERIES, 2017–18 5 MARCH 2018 House of Representatives by-elections: 1901–2017 Stephen Barber Statistics and Mapping Section Executive summary This paper provides details of House of Representatives by-elections, from that held for Darling Downs on 14 September 1901 to the most recent held on 16 December 2017 for Bennelong. The following observations can be made about those by-elections: • there have been 151 by-elections, an average of 3.4 per parliament • the average number of nominations has grown over the years from 2.2 per by-election to 12.0 per by- election • in only four cases was a by-election contested by just a single candidate • an increasing tendency has been for governments to avoid contesting by-elections in their opponents’ safe seats • in only ten cases have the opposition party failed to contest a by-election • seventy-six of the by-elections followed the resignation of the member, 68 members died in office, there have been six voided elections, and one MP was expelled from the House • since 1949 resignations account for almost two-thirds of by-elections and over half the resignations have occurred in safe seats • on 35 occasions the party complexion of a seat has altered at a by-election • five of the losses have been by the opposition of the day • the average two-party preferred swing against the government of the day has been 3.8 per cent • since 1949 the largest two-party swing against a government occurred against Labor in Canberra in 1995. The largest swing to a government occurred to the Coalition in McPherson in 1981. -

Hennessy Neves, Town Clerk What’s Happening Now at the Town Clerk’s Office: Important Reminders for the 2018 September Primary The deadline to register to vote for the Primary or Change your Political Party affiliation is Wednesday August 15th by 8:00 p.m. The deadline to apply for and vote by absentee in person is Friday August 31st by 5:00 p.m. If you need to apply for an application by mail and/or need a ballot send to you by mail, you must do so as soon as possible to allow for mailing time. Democratic Political Party-Voter can ONLY receive this ballot at the Primary D Party Election Republican Political Party-voter can ONLY receive this ballot at the Primary R Party Election Political Party-Voter can ONLY receive this ballot at the Primary Libertarian Party L Election WHO Can Vote in the September Primary? In Massachusetts, registered voters may choose to (1) enroll in a political party; (2) enroll with a political designation; or (3) choose to be an “unenrolled” voter (i.e., an “independent”). Voters may change their enrollment status with their election official, with a deadline twenty days before an election. All registered voters may vote in General Elections. Massachusetts voters enrolled in a particular Political PARTY may vote only in that party's primary, and cannot cross-over to vote in another party's primary, but "Unenrolled" voters may cast a primary ballot for one of the three parties. -

Box 613 Petersham 2049 Email: [email protected] Web site: noaircraftnoise.org.au Airport Regulation inquiry Productivity Commission Locked Bag 2 Collins Street East Victoria 8003 Dear Sir/ Madam, Written Submission Economic Regulation of Airports - Productivity Commission Draft (February 2019) This submission highlights that much of the information in the Draft Report is inadequate or incorrect which lead to invalid and socially unacceptable recommendations and conclusions of changing the environmental constraints and associated regulation on Sydney Airport without regard to impact on residents of Sydney. The absence of social and environmental objectives in the study (Draft Report, page 43-44) has lead to the unfair and incorrect conclusions as demonstrated by the inclusion of the aviation lobby issues (relaxing the Cap and Curfew) and not the issues nor the feedback of the community sector submissions which safeguard the quality of life in Sydney for over a million people. The equity objective which was only included in this review for regional NSW's access to Sydney Airport but was not included for the residents under the flight paths. This blatant omission of the equity objective for residents of Sydney has removed any objectivity in the conclusions and recommendations outlined in this report in regard to Sydney Airport. Rather the proposals and recommendations have been supplied by the aviation lobby. If you are going to place an airport in the centre of a city then social, environmental and equity objectives are paramount and MUST over-ride the efficiency objective. Release of this flawed Draft Report resulted in a number of media releases by the aviation lobby advocating for relaxing of the Sydney Airport Cap and Curfew for the benefit of airport efficiency and airline profits with the losers being the residents of Sydney. -

He also writes regularly on electoral matters for the Sydney Morning Herald. Antony studied at Sydney University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and computing, and a Bachelor of Economics with Honours in politics. He has produced previously a number of major studies on NSW elections for the Parliamentary Library.
