The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. i Portrayals of the Moriori People Historical, Ethnographical, Anthropological and Popular sources, c. 1791- 1989 By Read Wheeler A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History, Massey University, 2016 ii Abstract Michael King’s 1989 book, Moriori: A People Rediscovered, still stands as the definitive work on the Moriori, the Native people of the Chatham Islands. King wrote, ‘Nobody in New Zealand – and few elsewhere in the world- has been subjected to group slander as intense and as damaging as that heaped upon the Moriori.’ Since its publication, historians have denigrated earlier works dealing with the Moriori, arguing that the way in which they portrayed Moriori was almost entirely unfavourable. This thesis tests this conclusion. It explores the perspectives of European visitors to the Chatham Islands from 1791 to 1989, when King published Moriori. It does this through an examination of newspapers, Native Land Court minutes, and the writings of missionaries, settlers, and ethnographers. The thesis asks whether or not historians have been selective in their approach to the sources, or if, perhaps, they have ignored the intricacies that may have informed the views of early observers. The thesis argues that during the nineteenth century both Maori and European perspectives influenced the way in which Moriori were portrayed in European narrative. -
Origins of NZ English
Origins of NZ English There are three basic theories about the origins of New Zealand English, each with minor variants. Although they are usually presented as alternative theories, they are not necessarily incompatible. The theories are: • New Zealand English is a version of 19th century Cockney (lower-class London) speech; • New Zealand English is a version of Australian English; • New Zealand English developed independently from all other varieties from the mixture of accents and dialects that the Anglophone settlers in New Zealand brought with them. New Zealand as Cockney The idea that New Zealand English is Cockney English derives from the perceptions of English people. People not themselves from London hear some of the same pronunciations in New Zealand that they hear from lower-class Londoners. In particular, some of the vowel sounds are similar. So the vowel sound in a word like pat in both lower-class London English and in New Zealand English makes that word sound like pet to other English people. There is a joke in England that sex is what Londoners get their coal in. That is, the London pronunciation of sacks sounds like sex to other English people. The same joke would work with New Zealanders (and also with South Africans and with Australians, until very recently). Similarly, English people from outside London perceive both the London and the New Zealand versions of the word tie to be like their toy. But while there are undoubted similarities between lower-class London English and New Zealand (and South African and Australian) varieties of English, they are by no means identical. -

POROPOROAKI FOR TE ARIKINUI DAME TE ATAIRANGIKAAHU 1931 – 2006 From the President of the Polynesian Society Ko Potatau te tangata Ko Taupiri te maunga Ko Waikato te awa He piko he taniwha, he piko he taniwha Te Arikinui acknowledges her people after the formalities of her Silver Jubilee Celebrations. 209 The tangihanga for Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu was marked by an unprecedented outpouring of affection and respect from all over New Zealand and beyond. On behalf of the Polynesian Society’s Council and members, I have been asked to record our appreciation of her service as Patron from 1981 to 2006, and to pay tribute to the part she played in bringing New Zealanders together as a nation. Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu was a significant figure in my life from the early 1960s, when Koro Kapunga Dewes and I were tutor-organisers with Auckland University’s Department of Adult Education and escorted classes of Maori and Pakeha students to gatherings at Tainui marae. A happy young mother, Princess Piki (as she then was) was usually present in the circle surrounding her parents, King Koroki and his wife Te Atairangikaahu, acting as support and increasingly as understudy to her father. In the communities we visited she was clearly liked and respected for her unassuming manners, her loving care of her parents, and the competence and commitment with which she carried out the duties assigned to her. It was no surprise to us when Tainui accepted the advice of the other tribes attending King Koroki’s tangihanga and named her to lead the Kingitanga as Queen. -

On a clear day, you'll see the orange-topped chimneys of the Huntly Power station standing in the distance. 1.5km in, past Maurea Marae, there's a monument to the Ngāti Naho chief, Te Wheoro, whose personal history embodies the extraordinary stresses of colonial rule on Waikato Māori as they argued strategies to preserve tribal identity. Te Wheoro sided at rst with the Crown. In 1857, he spoke against setting up a Māori king and, at the great conference of Māori leaders at Kohimarama in 1860, spoke again in favour of the Government. Governor Grey's British troops invaded Waikato territory in July 1863. In November that year, the British Troops overcame the Māori redoubt at Rangiriri, forcing the Māori King, Tāwhiao, out of Ngāruawāhia to sanctuary around Waitomo and Te Kūiti. In the years that followed, Te Wheoro acted as an intermediary for the Government's negotiation with the King. -

CULTURAL CONVERSATIONS IN A COUNSELLING CONTEXT A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Counselling at University of Waikato by Jane Harkness The University of Waikato 2008 Abstract This research project focuses on counselling practice with Maori women who have engaged in counselling in relation to overcoming the effects of both historic and recent sexual abuse. The researcher / counsellor is pakeha. The counsellor / researcher, researches her practice and its possible effects through research interviews with three women. The project offers a reflection on her practice ethics and on what she learns from the women. In particular, she explores the intentions and effects of an orientation to counselling that includes offering and taking up conversations about aspects of cultural identity. -

It contains a 400 m thick marine sedimentary succession of Miocene age and Quaternary ignimbrites. The field area comprises 900 km2 of steep to rolling farmland and some large patches of native forest, and includes the towns of Ohura in the west and Taumarunui in the east. There is limited outcrop exposure in the study area, and the sedimentary succession is often weathered. -

Documenting Maori History: THE ARREST OF TE KOOTI RIKIRANGI TE TURUKI, 1889* TRUTH is ever a casualty of war and of the aftermath of war and so it is of the conflicts between Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand. A bare hun- dred years is too short a time for both peoples, still somewhat uncertainly working out their relationships in New Zealand, to view the nineteenth- century conflicts with much objectivity. Indeed, partly due to the con- fidence and articulateness of the younger generations of Maoris and to their dissatisfaction with the Pakeha descriptions of what is and what happened, the covers have only in the last decade or so really begun to be ripped off the struggles of a century before. Some truth is emerging, in the sense of reasonably accurate statements about who did what and why, but so inevitably is a great deal of myth-making, of the casting of villains and the erection of culture-heroes by Maoris to match the villains and culture-heroes which were created earlier by the Pakeha—and which many Pakeha of a post-imperial generation now themselves find very inadequate. In all of this academics are going to become involved, partly because they are going to be dragged into it by the public, by their students and by the media, and partly because it is going to be difficult for some of them to resist the heady attractions of playing to the gallery of one set or another of protagonists or polemicists, frequently eager to have the presumed authority of an academic imprimatur on their particular ver- sion of what is supposed to have happened.
