De ellos, 120 tendrán menos de 80 años y 73 superarán esta edad. Dentro del Colegio Cardenalicio, habrá 9 purpurados creados por Pablo VI; 169 creados por Juan Pablo II; y 15 creados por Benedicto XVI. Por continentes 100 serán de Europa; 53 de América -20 de América Latina y 23 de Estados Unidos de América y Canadá-, 20 de Asia, 16 de Africa y 4 de Ocesanía. Italia continuará siendo el país con mayor número de cardenales -40, de ellos 21 menores de 80 años-, seguida de USA con 15 y a continuación España y Francia con 9, Brasil y Polonia con 8 y Alemania, 6. A lo largo de los próximos meses del año 2006, otros siete cardenales cumplirán 80 años: el italiano Cacciavillan, el ucraniano Jaworski, el francés Lustiger, el español Carles, el norteamericano Baum -el unico de los nueve cardenales de Pablo VI todavía menor de 80 años-, el ugandés Wamala y el chileno Medina. Otros seis cardenales alcanzarán esta edad en el primer semestre de 2007.
