Biographical Note Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), son of Lyman Beecher, was an American clergyman born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1813. He was known as a powerful and convincing speaker who commanded wide influence throughout the country. Along with his sister, Harriet Beecher
