She put homemakers at a center of power, since she believed that they would be able to not only teach children to become true Christian citizens, but reform men as well. -

Criticisms of these two groups could often be found in the same northern evangelical journal, if not on the same page. Words such as “despotism” and “tyranny” described both the theological condi- tion of the Catholic Church and the political condition of the South. Slavery and Catholicism were labeled incompatible with republican insti- tutions and bereft of the virtues necessary to sustain a democratic people. -

Chronology of the Addiction Recovery Advocacy Movement Pat Taylor, Tom Hill and William White We’ve described the rich history of people in recovery, family members, friends and allies coming together to support recovery by highlighting key moments from the 1700s leading up to the present day. Please join us in acknowledging the shoulders we stand on and in forging a movement that embraces recovery as a civil right for all Americans and people all across the world. Earlier Organizing Efforts 1730s- 1830s Abstinence-based, Native American religious and cultural revitalization movements mark the first recovery focused advocacy efforts in North America. 1799 Prophet-led Recovery Movements: Handsome Lake (1799), Shawnee Prophet (Tenskwatawa, 1805), Kickapoo Prophet (Kennekuk, 1830s) 1840s The Washingtonian movement marks the first Euro-American movement organized by and for those recovering from alcoholism—a movement that involved a public pledge of sobriety and public acknowledgement of one’s recovery status. 1840s Conflict within Washingtonian societies rises over the question of legal prohibition of the sale of alcohol and the role of religion in recovery; recovering alcoholics go underground in following decades within fraternal temperance societies and ribbon reform clubs. 1845 Frederick Douglass acknowledges past intemperance, signs temperance pledge and becomes central figure in “Colored Temperance Movement”—framing sobriety as essential for full achievement of citizenship. 1895 Keeley League members (patient alumni association of the Keeley Institutes—a national network of addiction cure institutes) march on the Pennsylvania capital in support of a Keeley Law that would provide state funds for people who could not afford the Keeley cure. -

Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Its History, Its Issues, and Its Consequences Abstract: This research paper analyzes Harriet Beecher Stowe’s most influential and successful work, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Although Uncle Tom’s Cabin began as a simple novel written by a woman who was both a wife and mother, it grew to be one of the strongest antislavery books and was even credited with giving the impetus to initiate the Civil War. Stowe incorporated several strongly debated issues of her time in the novel, including slavery, alcohol temperance, and gender roles. However, she was careful to work within the accepted social boundaries and was thus able to appeal to many groups through her novel. Nevertheless, Uncle Tom’s Cabin was highly controversial and sparked a storm of discussion and action from the entire world. This paper explores Stowe’s life, the issues contained within the novel and their presentation, and the reactions of the American public and the world. Some of the strength of the novel is drawn from Stowe’s own life experiences and struggles, further intensifying the message of Uncle Tom’s Cabin. TEMPERANCE The antebellum period was famously a time of social reform Reformers agitated for the abolition of slavery and the expansion of women's rights, but they also renovated prisons and poorhouses and instituted mental asylums and schools for the deaf and the blind. They passed out religious tracts and insisted that the Sabbath be observed. They improved sewers and drains, inspected the homes of the poor, and cam- paigned against the death penalty and for world peace. They lived in communes, rejected fashion in favor of rational dress, and took all sorts of water cures. But above all else, they advocated temperance reform. Antebellum temperance reform was the largest mass . movement in United States history—and certainly one i of the most influential. Temperance reform unfolded in five sometimes ; ovei l a p p i n g phases: (1) the licensing movement of the , eighteenth century, (2) the moderationist societies of the early nineteenth century, (3) the temperance soci- f eties of the early to mid-nineteenth century, (4) the teetotal societies of the mid-nineteenth century, and (5) the prohibitionist movement of the mid-nine- teenth century. Finney began a career in ministry that was to have far- reaching implications for the religious as well as the civil life of the people of the United States. In July of that year he was ordained by the Presbytery of St. Lawrence, and assigned as a missionary to the little towns of Evans Mills and Antwerp in Jefferson County, New York. Under the vivid preaching of this ex-lawyer a wave of revivalism began to sweep through the whole region.^ Following the revival of 1824-27, Finney carried the religious awakening into Philadelphia, New York City, and Rochester, New York. -

MARCHANT LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA APRIL 2012 Introduction While touring America during the early 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville reflected upon the religious character of the young country. As he described America’s founding, he captured the interconnection between the country’s Protestant piety and political system: “Most of English America has been peopled by men who, having shaken off the authority of the Pope, acknowledged no other religious supremacy; they brought, therefore, into the New World a form of Christianity which I can only describe as democratic and republican. From the start, politics and religion were in agreement and have continued to be so ever since.”1 While people widely acknowledge that America was founded by people seeking religious freedom, many fail to recognize the fundamentally Protestant and largely anti-Catholic character of this undertaking. The pervasiveness of anti-Catholicism in early America and the dramatic scenes it produced prompt reflections on this frequently overlooked influence on national development. Hanging an unpopular politician or tax collector in effigy and tarring and feathering were both Revolutionary protests that have become familiar images of America’s early history. However, before the colonists protested their British government, they had years of practice publicly protesting Catholicism on Pope’s Day. Each November 5, Englishmen in the mother country and in her colonies paraded papal effigies and carts through the streets, celebrating the preservation of English Protestantism as they vilified Catholicism.2 Another evidence of widespread anti-Catholicism was the refusal to observe the December 25 holiday. -

“Singleness of purpose “ The Washingtonian movement (Washingtonians, Washingtonian Temperance Society or Washingtonian Total Abstinence Society) was a 19th-century fellowship founded on April 2, 1840 by six alcoholics. The idea was that by relying on each other, sharing their alcoholic experiences and creating an atmosphere of conviviality, they could keep each other sober. Total abstinence from alcohol was their goal. The group taught sobriety and preceded Alcoholics Anonymous by almost a century. Members sought out other "drunkards" (the term alcoholic had not yet been created), told them their experiences with alcohol abuse and how the Society had helped them achieve sobriety. Their monthly meetings proved such a success that by their first anniversary the Baltimore Washingtonians counted about 1,000 reformed drunkards and 5,000 other members. By may of 1842 the movement had penetrated every major area of the country. At its peak the membership was estimated at anywhere from one to six million of whom perhaps 100,000 to 600,000 were sober drunks Washingtonians at their peak numbered 600.000However, in the space of just a few years, this society all but disappeared because they became fragmented in their primary purpose, becoming involved with all manner of controversial social reforms including prohibition, sectarian religion, politics and abolition of slavery. The Washingtonians drifted away from their initial purpose of helping the individual alcoholic, and disagreements, infighting, and controversies over prohibition eventually destroyed the group. By 1848 the movement had destroyed itself. The Washingtonians became so thoroughly extinct that, some 50 years later in 1935 when William Griffith Wilson ("Bill") and Dr.
