It is perhaps the first scholarly attempt to study the vegetarian community in China that does not treat it as an Oriental phenomenon isolated from any outside influence. -

Small Beer, Big Flavour!
Small Beer, Big Flavour! One day in a pub, where all good ideas come from, after a pint or two, Felix James and James Grundy were bemoaning the fact that it was next to impossible to get a beer around 2% ABV. ‘I was fed up with beers designed to blow your head off. All we wanted was a good tasting beer that wasn’t necessarily a mad craft beer’. Since that day 5 years ago, the pair have designed and built a unique brewery and made beer of 1% to 2.7% in alcohol content something to choose rather than a desperation purchase. So where did it all begin? Felix became involved in brewing at Mortlake and then Fuller’s. But it wasn’t beer that brought the pair together, rather gin. The pair met at Sipsmiths, the gin makers, where Felix was the head of ops and James was the head of sales. It was playing about on Felix’s 1.5 barrel brewing kit every weekend for a year that turned, what they both thought was a bit of a joke, into something they thought had a future. The next step was getting the money, which they did through a small panel of investors. This enabled them to buy a 30 barrel plant, so they not exactly starting small, although their original 1.5 barrel plant is still proudly on display in the corner and, Felix said, it is still used from time to time for a test brew. The brewing kit is in a cavernous industrial unit, with high ceiling, a balcony with a meeting room and another unit next door for offices. -

Chronology of the Addiction Recovery Advocacy Movement Pat Taylor, Tom Hill and William White We’ve described the rich history of people in recovery, family members, friends and allies coming together to support recovery by highlighting key moments from the 1700s leading up to the present day. Please join us in acknowledging the shoulders we stand on and in forging a movement that embraces recovery as a civil right for all Americans and people all across the world. Earlier Organizing Efforts 1730s- 1830s Abstinence-based, Native American religious and cultural revitalization movements mark the first recovery focused advocacy efforts in North America. 1799 Prophet-led Recovery Movements: Handsome Lake (1799), Shawnee Prophet (Tenskwatawa, 1805), Kickapoo Prophet (Kennekuk, 1830s) 1840s The Washingtonian movement marks the first Euro-American movement organized by and for those recovering from alcoholism—a movement that involved a public pledge of sobriety and public acknowledgement of one’s recovery status. 1840s Conflict within Washingtonian societies rises over the question of legal prohibition of the sale of alcohol and the role of religion in recovery; recovering alcoholics go underground in following decades within fraternal temperance societies and ribbon reform clubs. 1845 Frederick Douglass acknowledges past intemperance, signs temperance pledge and becomes central figure in “Colored Temperance Movement”—framing sobriety as essential for full achievement of citizenship. 1895 Keeley League members (patient alumni association of the Keeley Institutes—a national network of addiction cure institutes) march on the Pennsylvania capital in support of a Keeley Law that would provide state funds for people who could not afford the Keeley cure. -

Quakers Living Adventurously: The Library and Archives of the Society of Friends Transcript Date: Wednesday, 23 January 2013 - 1:00PM Location: Barnard's Inn Hall 23 January 2013 Quakers Living Adventurously: The Library and Archives of the Society of Friends David Blake In this lecture I aim to do two main things: To tell you something about the history of the Library of the Society of Friends over almost 340 years and to talk about some of the things Quakers have done, illustrating them with materials held by the Library. But first I will talk briefly about the Society – say something about its name, tell you about its foundation and add just a little about what Quakerism is. However, I don’t consider myself to be an expert on this and the focus of this lecture will be very much on the library. The Formation of the Society and its Early History First, then, the name of the Society. The official name is the Religious Society of Friends in Britain, but to many people it is known simply as the Society of Friends. The word ‘Quaker’, which comes from the tendency of early Friends to shake as they worshipped, springs more easily off the tongue and indeed, if you look at our website you will see the banner ‘Quakers in Britain’. But Quakers - despite being very modern in many ways, witness their views on same sex marriage – seem to like tradition and you will hear the terms Quaker and Friend used all the time and interchangeably. Many names have been retained: the Chief Executive is still known as the Recording Clerk and one of the main bodies remains the Meeting for Sufferings. -

INTRODUCTION In 2013, the taps opened on Texas’ craft beer industry.1 New beer producers, new investors, and new consumers poured into the widening market hoping to capitalize on craft beer’s new popularity. Around the Country, engineers, lawyers, and other professionals quit their careers to rush into the new craft beer market, going from brewing beer by the liter in their garages to opening massive operations producing thousands of barrels of beer per year.2 Since 2013, Texas became the 8th largest producer of craft beer in the Country, and the economic impact for the State generated by the craft beer industry totals more than $4.5 billion, the 3rd highest in the Nation.3 *Candidate for Juris Doctor, 2019, Baylor University School of Law; B.A. Economics, 2016, Baylor University. FRAGA* Following the enactment of Prohibition, it took the United States almost four decades to legalize homebrewing. Subsequently, the nation experienced a booming interest in beer. And not just beer, but good beer. Drinkers found them- selves invested in both quality and variety. This interest has matured into the craft beer industry. Even in holdover states, where state laws prohibited homebrewing far past 1979, the craft beer industry has experienced near exponential growth following the legalization of homebrewing. This has resulted in significant economic implications. Given these consider- ations, nations with restrictive homebrewing laws, like Ja- pan, should consider easing them. -
