Gina Lucero, RN Nurse Member of the American Cannabis Nurses Association Specializing in Cannabinoid Therapy Frequent questions from our Cannabis Patients This issue the focus is on Women’s Health and the concerns that some of our patients have.

How does cannabis help my health as a woman?

Our reproductive organs, including your uterus and ovaries, contain both types of cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. These receptors respond to the cannabinoids found in cannabis or your body’s natural endocannabinoids, such as anandamide, which is known as the “bliss molecule”.

The uterus contains the highest levels of anandamide in your whole body. During ovulation, your uterus has 100 times more anandamide than your brain does. Estro- gen is linked to anandamide. When our levels are low, so is anandamide. If you are feeling moody or irritable or craving fatty comfort foods, it is because your anan- damide levels are low….

Will cannabis rubs or topical treat my menstrual cramps?

Rubbing a cannabis infused topical on your pelvis area is a wonderful option. Topicals activate the CB2 receptors and don’t seep into your bloodstream. You can isolate the area and get some awesome relief.

10 The Chronicle New Mexico’s Cannabis Magazine "In states where substance use is considered child abuse this may be especially catastrophic. Above all, care for pregnant women who use cannabis should be non-punitive and grounded in respect for patient autonomy."

How can I treat chronic pelvic pain?

Taking an oral tincture daily will help to combat pain and inflammation. If you are using a medical cannabis product, you can try a 1:1 ratio or a 2:1 ratio of CBD:THC. If you are using a hemp based product, you can try a 300 mg to 750 mg tincture. Take a serving in the am and pm before going to bed. Some women will micro-dose every 4-6 hours to keep a steady serving of cannabinoids in their system especially during their “monthly” cycle. Vaginal suppositories are wonderful for pelvic pain issues, endometriosis, yeast infections, etc.

Can cannabis help increase my libido?

Cannabis has long been regarded as an aphrodisiac, there are cannabis strains specifically designed to help women have more intense sexual experiences. There are several strains out there that claim to be libio enhancers, according to Leafly, Sexxpot, Green Crack, Granddaddy Purple, Hindu Skunk, and Sour Dream, check with your local dispensaries to see if they carry any of these libido enhancing strains. You might get lucky ;)

Can I use CBD products during pregnancy?

There is not a ton of research on ingesting cannabis during pregnancy. According to the findings of several major scientific studies, human mothers naturally produce cannabinoids in breast milk and furthermore these cannabinoids are vital for proper infant development. Morning sickness affects many mothers. Many mothers have claimed to have used CBD and, according to them, it helped with their morning sickness. People in a lot of situations have made claims that they experience alleviated nausea symptoms, reduced pain, and an overall sense of well being. It is recommended to check with your physician first, use at your discretion and stay with a high CBD that has less than .3 percent or less THC or a CBD only product. Tinctures, edibles, salves, or transdermal patches are recommended routes of administration.

Remember that we are a medical cannabis state however "In states where sub- stance use is considered child abuse this may be especially catastrophic. Above all, care for pregnant women who use cannabis should be non-pu- nitive and grounded in respect for patient autonomy." Cannabis and pregnancy: Maternal child health implications during a period of drug policy liberalization. 10.1016/j.ypmed.2017.05.012
