As late as the early nineteenth century, when many of the modern fields of the true sciences of mind and matter were young and undeveloped, alchemy was a beacon for many people looking for a philosophical basis to the better understanding of life--to the basic religious and philosophical truths. -

W. Dyson Perrins, the Huntington Library’s Ripley scroll (HM 30313) is one of the most ornate and esoteric illuminated manuscripts of early modern England. Much remains unknown about the iconology and historical context of the Ripley scrolls, of which approximately twenty remain worldwide. The self-consciously archaic scroll at the Huntington draws on a range of contemporary sources, including emblem books, heraldic imagery, and illuminated alchemical manuscripts from the fifteenth cen- tury, such as the Rosarium philosophorum and the Aurora consurgens. -

Große Erwartungen und bittere Enttäuschung: Grimm, Kolbenheyer und Stapel in ihrem Verhältnis zur NSDAP 5.1 Frühe Unterstützung und erste Fühlungnahme 1923–1930/31 Ich würde es nicht begrüßen, wenn der Radika- lismus in unveränderter Form Oberhand auf lange Dauer erhielte, aber wenn der National- sozialismus nicht gekommen wäre, man hätte ihn erfinden müssen.1 Schon sehr früh nach dem Zusammenbruch des „Dritten Reichs“ hat Veit Valen- tin hellsichtig hervorgehoben, wie weitgehend die Geschichte des Nationalsozia- lismus und seines Aufstiegs als eine „Geschichte seiner Unterschätzung“2 verstan- den werden kann. Speziell zur Erklärung der illusorischen Zähmungskonzeptio- nen3 seitens der Eliten des politischen Konservatismus ist das Interpretament der „Unterschätzung“ fraglos von zentraler Bedeutung. Im Falle von Grimm, Kolben- heyer und Stapel würde hinsichtlich ihres Verhältnisses zur NSDAP vor 1933 ein allein auf „Unterschätzung“ abzielender analytischer Zugriff indes deutlich zu kurz greifen. Gewiss: Auch sie perzipierten die NS-Bewegung mitunter leichtfer- tig als eine vermeintlich rein episodenhafte Erscheinung, die kurzfristig für eigene Zwecke instrumentalisiert werden könnte und sollte.4 Eine erschöpfende Erläute- rung ihrer Einstellungen ist damit jedoch keineswegs gewonnen. Ihre Wahrneh- mung der NS-Bewegung war weder konstant, noch blieb sie ohne Ambivalenzen, wie ein Blick in die Quellen rasch lehrt. Die Annahme, Grimm, Kolbenheyer und Stapel wären sich in dem hier interessierenden Zeitfenster stets sicher gewesen, wie sie sich zum Nationalsozialismus stellen sollten und wie dieser als politische und soziale Bewegung einzuschätzen sei, wäre irrig und ginge an der empirischen Realität vorbei. Penman (Oxford) Prophecy, Alchemy and Strategies of Dissident Communication: A 1630 Letter from the Bohemian Chiliast Paul Felgenhauer (1593–c. 1677) to the Leipzig Physician Arnold Kerner Introduction Preserved in a slim folio-sized volume in the library of the University of Leipzig is a collection of forty-six letters, written by various persons between 1618 and 1630, all addressed to the Leipzig physician Arnold Kerner (fl . 1608–c. 1631).1 This fragment of Kerner’s correspondence is an invaluable source for the study of dissident thought in the Holy Roman Empire in the early seventeenth century. The volume contains letters to Kerner from the likes of the Torgau astrologer and prophet Paul Nagel (c. 1580–1624), the Langensalza antinomian Esajas Stiefel (1566–1627), his nephew Ezechiel Meth, the Bohemian chiliast Paul Felgenhauer, and several others. These letters touch on a variety of topics, including the printing and distribution of heterodox literature, the structure and nature of inchoate networks of heterodox personalities – particularly the group sur- rounding Jakob Böhme (1575–1624) – as well as communicating important biographi- cal and autobiographical information of individual dissidents and their supporters. -

Prehistoric Times To tell the story of chemistry, it is best to start in prehistoric times with primitive humans. In his quest for survival, and endowed with a natural curiosity, primitive man learned much about his environment. He was aware of physical properties of substances such as color, shape or form, hardness, taste, weight, density in the form of relative weight, and odor. And he was most probably aware of natural physical changes such as water to ice (and vice versa), lava to rock, certain rocks to dust, etc. It is also safe to assume that primitive man, although he had no knowledge of chemistry, was aware of chemical change in the forms of decaying organic matter, natural production of ozone from lightning (by noting the odor of the ozone), wood burning into charcoal and ash, etc. But primitive man was by no means any sort of scientist and he made no logical or organized study of natural phenomena. The information he gathered about the world was passed from generation to generation by memory, demonstration, or by observation without explanation or any understanding of the true reasons for these phenomena.
