Course Description: 345A is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of accompanying with a focus in vocal and repertoire. The Piano Accompaniment course (MU 345) consists of sight-reading, and performance of collaborative vocal and instrumental repertoire of many styles. This class focuses on and develops ensemble skills such as awareness of balance, dynamics, articulations, and timing when playing with other musicians, as well as the development of good rehearsal and performance techniques.

Piano students collaborate with vocalists and instrumentalists in the department and sometimes with outside musicians. Students perform in class weekly, get feedback on their progress, discuss challenges and engage in problem solving, and research their pieces. Students perform their collaborative pieces in many venues (e.g. Music Hour, piano recitals, senior project recitals, recording studio projects, other Cal Poly classes, as well as outside venues). At the end of the quarter, all students present their studied pieces (placing them in historical context and discussing performance practice and personal approaches) and perform their pieces in a jury recital.

Performance Requirements: Each student is required to seek a collaborative partner. Each ensemble group will be required to play an end-of-quarter performance, which will be attended by a faculty jury. Repertoire will be assigned on the basis of keyboard skills and experience; ensemble teams will prepare individual parts and rehearse ensembles outside of class meetings.

Coarse Goals: 1. The development of ensemble skills: awareness of balance, dynamics, articulations, rhythm and timing, when playing with other musicians. 2. The development of good rehearsal and performance techniques. 3. Introduction to the collaborative vocal and instrumental repertoire.

Blackboard: Course syllabus and assignments are available for downloading from Blackboard (https://blackboard.csupomona.edu). Scheduling and other updates will be posted in Blackboard and emailed to students. Students are responsible for checking and properly maintaining their email.
