ORGANISATIONAL CONTEXT Antarctica is a established on 1 July 1996 under the New Zealand Antarctic Institute Act to develop, manage and execute New Zealand’s activities in respect of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Our key activities include facilitating scientific research in Antarctica, protection of the environment and raising public awareness of the global significance of the continent and surrounding Southern Ocean. Antarctica New Zealand operates in a range of environments including a typical office and warehouse environment in Christchurch, as well as the more challenging and occasionally hostile environment of Antarctica. Antarctica New Zealand is committed to maintaining the health and safety of all employees and participants in the New Zealand Antarctic Programme, including contractors. Health and Safety is a core value and the highest organisational priority. This role is responsible for the development, implementation and management of Antarctica New Zealand's Health and Safety System.

ROLE PURPOSE

Support Antarctica New Zealand’s work to continually and systematically improve the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, contractors and visitors to ensure no one is harmed.

WORK OF ROLE  Promote, champion and drive continual improvement in health and safety.  Manage Antarctica New Zealand’s Health and Safety Improvement Project; o Support continual improvement and zero harm by updating policies, procedures, controls, and measurement and review processes; o Develop the system to be accredited to an internationally applied standard (e.g. OHSAS 18001: 2007) by December 2017.  Lead the on-going management of the Health and Safety System.  Provide expert advice to staff on the implementation of the health and safety system, facilitating others’ work on health and safety.  Provide accurate and timely advice to external stakeholders and contractors on the health and safety system, including cooperation and coordination with those with whom we share duties.  Undertake any other tasks assigned by the General Manager Policy, Environment and Safety.

KEY CHALLENGES  Maintaining and enhancing a strong health and safety culture;  Supporting the organisation and inspiring engagement in the implementation of an improved and continually improving health and safety system;  Working with internal and external stakeholders, some of whom will be working remotely.

MINIMUM CAPABILITY NECESSARY TO WORK TO ROLE

CAPABILITY AREA DESCRIPTION Qualifications, Certificates  National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health and Memberships (NEBOSH) International Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety; or an equivalent Grad / Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.  Membership with the New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) and/or the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Knowledge, Skills and  At least three years’ experience of delivering and preferably leading Experience health and safety projects and outcomes.  Experience with Systems Management (e.g. OHSAS 18001: 2007) and audits.  A high level of understanding and experience with relevant national and international health and safety legislation.  Project management experience.
