CVS Central Lancashire will be holding a six week information exhibition in the Guild Hall Arcade between 20th August and 2nd October. We held a similar event last year at the St George's Shopping Centre and it was a huge success. This is a chance to promote your services and to find out about other services being provided in and around . Bring your stands, bring your banners, bring your leaflets and your posters! We anticipate an even bigger event this year as it is Guild year and we would like to encourage as much participation as possible. We already have many groups signed up but if you would like to be involved, all you need to do is visit our website http://www.cvscentrallancashire.org.uk and click on Useful Links. At the bottom of that page you will find a document entitled "Information Event Sign-up". Complete that form and return it to us, either by hand, by post or by email.

About one in 10 of Oxford's students are from families with an income below this threshold - and the first wave of scholarships will be awarded this autumn. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-18785041

Could It Really Work For Your Business? - 26 September "Many businesses large and small are already making use of Prison Workshops", according to Prime Minister David Cameron. Ministers are launching a new scheme to improve prisoners job prospects and are working with the CBI to ensure that measures are put in place to guard against unfair competition with ordinary businesses. ONE3ONE Solutions is the new enterprise utilising a workforce of prisoners in over 131 locations across England & Wales, which include Northwest Prisons Garth, Wymott, Kirkham and Lancaster Farms. With Sir Richard Branson endorsing the initiative, and with Companies such as Paccar, DHL, Amaryllis, Timpson and Calpac already utilising the Prison Service, and many more looking at it as an alternative to outsourcing to overseas countries, the big question is Could a Prison Enterprise Partnership Work For Your Business? To find out join The North & Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce on the 26th September at HMP Kirkham, 8.30am - 11am, when ONE3ONE Chief Executive Michelle Jarman-Howe will explain more about the initiative and the opportunities available for your business. More importantly you will have the opportunity to ask questions about potential benefits for your business and speak to some of the Companies who are already working alongside the Prisons in the Northwest. You will also have the opportunity to meet with some of the Prison Instructors directly who work and train the Prisoners in printing, textiles, engineering, laundry and many more skills. Children's charities warn of rise in vulnerable The number of children living in vulnerable families could rise to more than one million by 2015, three leading UK charities have warned. Research for the NSPCC, Action for Children and The Children's Society suggests struggling families will be badly hit by cuts to tax and benefits. They want urgent action to ensure the next generation of young does not become "victim" of austerity. Ministers say welfare reform will lift thousands of families out of poverty. The report by Landman Economics calculated that about 900,000 children were classed as living in vulnerable households in 2008. It predicts that figure could increase to more than a million in the next three years. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18732477

Families need £36,800 to live acceptably, study says A couple with two children now need to earn £36,800 a year to have a "socially acceptable" standard of living, an anti-poverty charity says. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation said its annual minimum income study suggests families must earn a third more than in 2008, to live within social norms. Rising childcare and transport costs, combined with cuts to benefits, have hit families hard, it added. The government said it was committed to helping the UK's "most vulnerable". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18770783

13 Well-being and education "go together" People who are better educated are more likely to say they are satisfied with their lives, a study suggests. And they are more likely to say that the things they do are worthwhile, according to research by the Office for National Statistics. The study is part of a £2m project launched by the prime minister to try to measure people's happiness and well-being. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-18724993

Few sector bodies believe statutory organisations engage with Compact Less than a fifth of voluntary organisations in England feel that statutory bodies are actively engaged with their local Compact, according to a new study. The Annual Local Compact Survey 2012: Results, produced by Compact Voice, which represents the voluntary sector on the Compact, shows that whereas 47 per cent of statutory sector feels it is actively engaged with the Compact, only 18 per cent of the voluntary sector agrees with this view. Tom Elkins, manager of Compact Voice, said the survey showed high levels of support for the Compact. "However, we are noticing a trend that suggests there is a widening gap in how successfully different sectors think their local Compact is being used," he said. http://www.compactvoice.org.uk/survey2012

New guide explains maternity rights and redundancy Acas and the Equality Human Rights Commission have published a new guide to help employers understand the rights of women who are pregnant or on maternity leave when facing redundancy. Policy Labour wants to set up military schools A military school could be set up in every region of England under Labour to raise aspirations in poor areas. Shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg wants to see the armed forces and service charities helping to run so-called "service schools". These would have a "distinct service ethos" and would employ qualified teachers, some with a forces background. An aide said the idea was more about leadership skills than boot camps. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-18770387

Consultations Central Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Groups priorities for Health Services - Deadline 31 July The Clinical Commissioning Groups, which will replace PCTs next April, are already involved in running health services and have produced plans for the health services in their area. They have developed priorities and need to consult on these with patients, the public and other stakeholders. Below are links to on-line surveys asking for comments on the respective priorities of three of the CCGs in the central Lancashire area. On a personal level you can complete the survey relevant to where you live/work but you may have colleagues/contacts within your organisations from some or all of the other areas. If this is the case

14 I would be grateful, where possible, if you could use your networks to spread the survey links wider and/or within your own area. Other work is being undertaken but the more people we reach the better so any help will be most gratefully received (even if you only complete it yourself!). The surveys do not take long to complete. NHS West Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CBD839M NHS Greater Preston Clinical Commissioning Group: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WB2BW88 NHS Chorley and South Ribble Clinical Commissioning Group: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WPG7XG9 Unfortunately, as is ever the case, timescales are tight as the priorities have recently been developed but form part of the authorisation process, which for some CCGs, starts in July. As a result I will need to close these surveys on 31 July at the latest.

Apologies also if you have already received this information from another source as you may be on more than one mailing list. Kind regards

Charity Commission Consults on Public Benefit Guidance - Deadline 26 September Charities in England and Wales have the opportunity to voice their opinion on the Charity Commission’s revised public benefit guidance for all charities. The revised guidance takes into account relevant legislative changes since it was first produced in 2008, including the introduction of the Charities Act 2011, the Equalities Act 2010 and relevant judgments of the Tribunal and Upper Tribunal. The consultation process will also take account of Lord Hodgson's Review of the Charities Act once published. Charity Commission Chair, Dame Suzi Leather said: “Public benefit is the defining characteristic of charity but is a far from simple concept. We have worked hard to write guidance that accurately reflects the law but is accessible for a charity trustee who just wants to know what to think about when making decisions that might affect their charity's public be nefit. We hope the online format will make this easier. We invite comments on both the form and content of 15 the revised guidance and also hope that the consultation blog will enable real time responses to views expressed.” The consultation can be found on the Charity Commission website http://www.charity- commission.gov.uk/About_us/About_the_Commission/consultations.aspx#current
