Since 1988, the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe of Barcelona have been jointly responsible for the biennial European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award.
The proposals made for each prize submitted by the nominators – the experts, the national architects associations and the advisory committee – are used by the Jury to arrive at its decisions on the Prize Winner, the Emerging Architect Winner and a broad selection of shortlisted works to disseminate European architecture by means of catalogues, exhibitions, lectures and debates.
In 2013, the 13th Award coincided with its 25th anniversary. In the course of these 25 years, the Fundació has organised thirteen Awards and built up a database of nearly 2,500 nominated works, one of the largest archives on contemporary architecture, consisting of photographs, drawings, digital and audiovisual materials and models.
The 14th Award received 420 nominated works, from amongst which the Jury members shortlisted 40 projects. Five finalist works competed for the Prize, and one Emerging Architect was chosen. The pavilion has a sensous materiality – the eye is not enough, you want to touch it, enjoy it with all of your senses.

02/2015 420 Nominees exhibition Barcelona 05/2015 2015 Prize exhibition Barcelona “I tend to believe that architecture plays an important role in city marketing, fashion magazines and lifestyle discourses. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that this is a sign of the strength of architecture. It can equally be maintained that this is the last resort of architecture seeking its last bastion of cultural relevance as it loses its capacity to play any relevant role in a more integral way, a more engaged way, in society as a whole. That’s why I’m very interested in new strategies which are not about form, not about iconism: they are about about social engineering.”

Santiago de Chile Buenos Aires Architecture is one of our main vehicles to pursue the European idea. The big question is: what might stand at the forefront of European architecture? Is there a common ground? I see a common ground. It’s the celebration of the public. European architecture celebrates the public, either through the classical architectural principle of their rooting, or through social engineering, community building, or highlighting, profiling a building with the public realm as the common ground.
— Ole Bouman, 2007
