The school, originally named “Galata Sarayi Enderun Mektebi" (Galata Palace Imperial School) is one of the oldest establishments of its kind in the world. Last year, the school proudly celebrated it’s 150th year. After providing valuable services to the Ottoman state for over 350 years, it underwent a modernization process and adopted the French secondary education system in 1868. Up till the end of the First World War in 1918, the school welcomed a diverse student body of different religious and ethnic groups constituting the population of the Ottoman Empire, such as Turks, Arabs, Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Levantines, Bulgarians, Albanians. Many of the graduates of this period, coming from various communities, became prominent statesmen, educators, bureaucrats and writers in Turkey as well as in their home countries. With the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the name was changed to its current name “Galatasaray Lisesi" and it became co-educational in 1965. -

A View of the History of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine
A VIEW OF THE HISTORY OF THE ISTANBUL FACULTY OF MEDICINE Prof. Dr. Nuran Yıldırım The Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, the Department of History of Medicine and Ethics Attributing the roots of the Istanbul Faculty of Medicine to the Fatih Darüşşifa after a great deal of discussion, the 500th anniversary of medical education in Istanbul was celebrated in 1970. The soundest documents showing that medical education was carried out in the Fatih Dârüşşifa were the appointment papers (rüus) of medical students for the dârüşşifa in the 60 years between 1723 and 1783. These nine rüus, which were recently published, clarify that there were positions for six medical students in the dârüşşifa, and that whenever a vacancy came up, a new medical student would be appointed by the chief physician to undergo a systematic medical training. 1-Archival document concerning Ismail Efendi‟s appointment in place of Derviş Mehmet in Fatih Darüşşifa after his death. With the opening of the Süleymaniye Medical Medrese, medical education in Istanbul, which had started with the Fatih Dârüşşifa, became institutionalized. The opening of a medical medrese for the first time in the Ottoman State is accepted as being an important step in our history of medical education. The Süleymaniye Medical Medrese (Süleymaniye Tıp Medresesi) was a medrese for specializing, or a “post-graduate” course, as only students who had completed their classic medrese education could continue. Not only did the physicians that were trained join the scholarly classes, but at the same time they could be qadi or rising even to the level of sheikh-ul-Islam or grand vizier. -

By inserting one structure into another at the Savoy Ulus clubhouse, Autoban demonstrates the power of architecture and interior design working in tandem. EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture/Mies Van Der Rohe Awards
Since 1988, the European Commission and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe of Barcelona have been jointly responsible for the biennial European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award. The proposals made for each prize submitted by the nominators – the experts, the national architects associations and the advisory committee – are used by the Jury to arrive at its decisions on the Prize Winner, the Emerging Architect Winner and a broad selection of shortlisted works to disseminate European architecture by means of catalogues, exhibitions, lectures and debates. In 2013, the 13th Award coincided with its 25th anniversary. In the course of these 25 years, the Fundació has organised thirteen Awards and built up a database of nearly 2,500 nominated works, one of the largest archives on contemporary architecture, consisting of photographs, drawings, digital and audiovisual materials and models. The 14th Award received 420 nominated works, from amongst which the Jury members shortlisted 40 projects. Five finalist works competed for the Prize, and one Emerging Architect was chosen. They were there to remove two of its most illustrious occupants: portraits that Raphael painted around 1504-1505. The two canvases, which show a Florentine merchant, Agnolo Doni, and his wife, Maddalena Strozzi, were gingerly carried through a nearly half-mile-long passageway that links the Pitti to the Uffizi. -
