The Stars of the Eighth Edition of Mercanteinauto Are the Legendary 6-Cylinder Inline Bmws and a Much Sought After EMW 340 with Red Propeller
Press Release AT MERCANTEINFIERA AN EXHIBITION TELLS (ALSO) THE STORY OF THE OTHER BMW LIFE, THE RED PROPELLER The stars of the eighth edition of Mercanteinauto are the legendary 6-cylinder inline BMWs and a much sought after EMW 340 with red propeller. The first edition of “Parma’s 100 km Rally”, with rural itineraries and a visit to the Dallara Academy, gets underway. The excitement continues at the exhibition with the Ferrari pit-stop, an event organized by the Scuderia Ferrari Club of Monticelli Terme. (Parma, 23 September) What hides behind the sparkling bodywork of a vintage car? Who has driven it and, above all, what is its story? The latter is embodied in the red propeller of the EMW 340, the protagonist of the eighth edition of Mercanteinauto, the event for car enthusiasts featuring at Fiere di Parma during the opening weekend (5-6 October) of Mercanteinfiera, the international exhibition dedicated to antiques, modern antiques and vintage collectibles (5-13 October). At the end of World War II, Germany had to cede control of Thuringia to the Soviet Union, and with it the city of Eisenach, historic headquarters of BMW car production. Awtowelo, the Soviet-controlled East German factory, used the BMW trademark illegally until 1952, when the Bavarian company forced the managers of the Eisenach plant to change it. From that time, their cars were branded as EMW (Eisenacher Motoren Werke). Their symbol was a red propeller. One of the rare models with this trademark will be on display at the exhibition. The car comes from Claudio Baroni’s Old Cars Collection, as do the legendary 6- cylinder inline BMWs on display at the exhibition in Pav. -
BMW History BMW in the 1910S - the Beginning
BMW history BMW in the 1910s - the beginning To better understand BMW today you have to know and understand BMW history. The last century gives the “flavor” of today’s BMW cars, the ingredient that makes them so special. This “special” can be almost seen as the soul of a person. BMW cars have an unmistakably personality and an obsessive care about the feeling of driving, thus their slogan "the ultimate driving machine". This creates a bond between the car and the driver that may last for a lifetime. These three magic letters stand for Bayerische Motoren Werke, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works. The "Motor" is the core of this acronym and is the foundation; the key part around which BMW builds every product. BMW Drives invites you to be part in this amazing trip and you will find out the story that lies behind BMW. HOW BMW PROGRESSED FROM THIS TO 1913 The man who started all was Karl Friedrich Rapp in October 1913. Not everybody knows that BMW started as a manufacturer of aircraft with Austro-Daimler, who was unable to meet its demands that of building V12 Aero engines under license. The company expanded too quickly, and by 1916 Karl Friedrich Rapp resigned from the company because of financial troubles. The company was taken over by two Austrians Franz- Josef Popp and Max Fritz backed by a Vienna engines. Rapp establishes "Rapp-Motorenwerke" in a former bicycle factory near Munich. He starts manufacturing his own aircraft engines but unfortunately they suffered form problems with vibrations. Close to Rapp´s factory, Gustav Otto, the son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, sets up a business building small aircrafts. -

75 Years of the BMW Roadsters
BMW Group Corporate and Governmental Affairs Media Information 28 May 2009 75 years of the BMW Roadster The BMW 315/1 and its Successors. Munich. The style has changed, but not the content: “Many German motorists see motoring not just as a comfortable and fast means of transport, but also as a sporting activity. These are people who, once they see an aerodynamic car body with a long and sleek engine compartment, as well as a speedometer extending all the way to 150 km/h, feel that strong yearning for wide open roads simply perfect for driving fast, for Alpine passes just begging to be conquered, and for competitors so easy to overtake.” It was precisely with these words that BMW announced the Company’s first self-engineered roadster in 1934. And indeed, this concept with its six-cylinder power unit was destined to shape the future of the brand, extending all the way to the current BMW Z4. The starting point for this development came at the Berlin Motor Show in May 1934. Here, together with the BMW 315 Saloon, BMW for the first time presented the prototype of a Sports Roadster with exceptionally attractive lines. Right behind the long and sleek engine compartment there were two sports seats tailored to the driver and front passenger protected by the low, raked windscreen and an emergency roof. The rear end tapered out in an elegant sweep to the back of the car, adding a particular aerodynamic touch with excellent streamlining. The radiator grille on this two-seater was inclined much further to the rear than on the Saloon, with mighty, sweeping front wheel arches extending on beneath the doors into the rear wheel arches. -
