  • Global Cities, Local Knowledge
Formatting and Change in East Asian Television Industries: Media Globalization and Regional Dynamics Lim, Wei Ling Tania Patricia BSocSc (Hons), MSc (Media & Comms) Creative Industries Research and Applications Centre Queensland University of Technology Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2005 Keywords Circuit of cultural production, East Asian popular culture, Television industries, Field of broadcasting, Formatting, Local knowledge, Media capitals, Neo-networks, Regional dynamics, TV Formats, martial arts dramas, teenage idol soap operas, game-shows. ii Abstract Television is increasingly both global and local. Those television industries discussed in this thesis transact in an extensive neo-network of flows in talents, financing, and the latest forms of popular culture. These cities attempt to become media capitals but their status waxes and wanes, depending on their success in exporting their Asian media productions. What do marital arts dramas, interactive game-shows, children’s animation and teenage idol soap operas from East Asian television industries have in common? Through the systematic use of TV formatting strategies, these television genres have become the focus for indigenous cultural entrepreneurs located in the East Asian cities of Hong Kong, Singapore and Taipei to turn their local TV programmes into tradable culture. This thesis is a re-consideration of the impact of media globalisation on Asian television that re-imagines a new global media order. It suggests that there is a growing shift in perception and trade among once-peripheral television industries that they may be slowly de-centring Hollywood’s dominance by inserting East Asian popular entertainment into familiar formats or cultural spaces through embracing global yet local cultures of production.

  • V 27 No 1 March 2013
II RR PP SS BULLETIN Newsletter of the International Radiation Physics Society Vol 27 No 1 March, 2013 One is constantly amazed at the exotic applications and breadth of physical insight that continues to spring from “old fashioned” x-ray spectroscopy. The choice of the cover art for this issue was inspired by a recent report in Nature* on the first determination of the spin rate of a supermassive black hole; and it is 84% as fast as Einstein's theory of gravity will allow. This required combining measurements from two x-ray spectroscopic space observatories, NASA's Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton, in this instance both focused upon a galaxy-centered black hole (NGC1365) that has a mass 2 million times that of our sun and is 56 million light years distant. This required assessing both the higher energy continuum portion of spectra (10 keV to 30 keV from NuSTAR) as well as the broadened x-ray emission lines from neutral and partially ionized iron (XMM-Newton), interpreted as fluorescence produced by the reflection of hard X-rays (from the relativistic jet) off the inner edge of an accretion disk. The line broadening occurs from Doppler broadening, gravitational red shifting, and “blue shifting” from partially ionized Fe. *A rapidly spinning supermassive black hole at the centre of NGC1365, G. • Displeasure, Star-Chasing and the Transcultural Networking Fandom
. Volume 10, Issue 2 November 2013 Displeasure, star-chasing and the transcultural networking fandom Egret Lulu Zhou The Chinese University, Hong Kong Abstract: Pleasure and its politics have been overemphasised in audience studies for many years. To delineate a more well-balanced picture of everyday-life consumption practices by fans, this paper aims to directly study the experiences of displeasure using a case study of star- chasing fans of Hong Kong television stars in Mainland China. In this paper, displeasure is defined and analysed culturally rather than psychoanalytically. Seven years of auto- ethnographic experience and seventeen in-depth interviews are the sources used in this qualitative study. Drawing on Castells’ ‘network society’ thesis, displeasure is identified by mapping out the power relations within transcultural fan communities, in which the traditional industry/fan dichotomy is replaced by multiple social players. Displeasure occurs in tandem with pleasure; thus, the fan identities in this case are constantly negotiated, reshaped and even discarded. Keywords: displeasure, star-chasing, networking, transcultural. Introduction Popular culture studies appear to be inextricably intertwined with the politics of pleasure. This type of research can be roughly categorised into two traditions. The first is ‘Pleasure is bad; it makes people passive and dull’. Cultural scholars who subscribed to this belief looked down on mass culture and often treated audiences as ‘cultural dopes’ because they indulge in the consumption of pleasure; most of the Frankfurt School theorists are exemplars of this tradition. The spectatorship studies of the British Screen journal also generally degraded popular pleasure. For instance, Mulvey (1975) proposed the ‘destruction of pleasure as a radical weapon’ in criticising mainstream Hollywood narrative movies.
