Doug started his post-production career learning the art and science of film imaging for visual effects. In the process, he worked with and learned from top film timers, VFX supervisors, and colour scientists, which has shaped his deep understanding of the business today.

When digital intermediate entered feature post-production, Doug was well-positioned to leverage his knowledge and experience to dive into the field head-first. Since 2003, he’s worked on dozens of renowned projects, including his recent work finishing Captain Marvel.

So, did you say- I’m going to be a colourist when I grow up? I didn’t come from telecine or commercials: I came through effects I sort of evolved into being a colourist really. I started working in the grading. That afforded me a foundational understanding of the lab industry at a company called Dream Quest Images, in Simi Valley here processes as we had to understand the chemical processes, the colour in Los Angeles. Your role in those situations is to ensure that the VFX come through. Additionally, of course you enhance their consistency from shot to shot throughout the scene, then see what you can embellish and make better – always looking for ways to improve the scene and plus it.

The responsibility is to ensure that it all comes together, but while you’re doing that you’re also saying “you know what, this works really well… but what if we add some interactive light because these are all visual effects from cut to cut: maybe we need to help join the cuts a little”.

We conformed in Baselight as well as performing the grade. That’s really almost the only way to manage it, because that way you can propagate episodic has just gone through the roof, which is a boon for our industry.

The budgets and production values on these shows are like features. Even more so, because they can develop over the course of maybe 10 episodes – three features in terms of run time. So, the story development and the look development is fantastic.
